Hello everyone, my name is Ronny. After so many times of antibody tubes mysteriously disappeared the morning I needed it to my experiment I decided to do something about it. I guess you all know the feeling, that chill down your spine when a lab member says, "oh, I just finished it yesterday". Immediately, labs in your vicinity are running through your head trying to figure out who might have what you are looking for and would help you with a small sample. For that purpose I have created a semi-social network. The groups were created according to names of medical schools, universities and scientific institutes around the world. The w…

  3. I've always had a passion for creation of things, and biology always fascinated me. I'm really interested in the creation or editing of cells and organisms, but I have no idea what field that would be. I'm almost sure it would be in biology, but I'm not even totally positive of that. I'd really like some help, can anyone point me towards a science field regarding creation or modification of cells or small organisms?

Which is more efficient at utilizing light energy, solar cells or the photosynthesis reaction? I was just wondering whether we may one day be able to utilize photosynthesis directly, for the production of electrical energy (I know that photosynthesis doesn't produce electrical energy, but it could be converted to electrical energy through suitable apparatus). Everyone's thoughts are welcome!

  6. Hello everyone, 1. My first question is when there is a wound, blood leaks and collects in the space as shown in the A diagram. Is it this blood that clots and fills the wound? 2. Now if the wound contracts a lot in C diagram, how can there be a scar left. Also epithelium always heals, so can not it hide the scar tissue. I mean why do we see darker scars in wounds. Isn't the epithelium over it unable to hide it? Thanks

  8. Hello everyone, This is the life cyle of H.diminuta. My question is the 4th point. It says ingestion of these arthropods/fleas by rats or humans. Do rats actually eat these fleas, or do the fleas live on rats's skin and suck their blood and via that infects rats, same for humans. Is it ingestion or do these fleas live on the skin of these individuals? This is H.nana. My question is about 1st point. Can humans get infected by eating infected eggs of rats, which are passed in their faeces? Thanks

A special protein in the stinging cells of aquatic polyps called hydrasallows these little creatures to detect light despite lacking eyes. This article has a very nice picture showing the nervous system on the hydra's tentacles: http://www.theepochtimes.com/n2/science/science-in-pics-how-the-eyeless-hydra-sees-199810.html

  10. Well, I got an anonymous envelope slid under my front door today, with a picture and a quote. The quote said "Intellectuals solve problems, geniuses prevent them." - Albert Einstein. But more importantly, I got a picture that I have NO IDEA what is, but my first guess is that it's the microscopic image of something plant-like, since there's lots of green in the picture. That being said, here's the picture: I'm not freaked out yet, but really interested what this could be and what it could all mean, someone might be fucking with me so any ideas on what it could be would really be appreciated. Thanks in advance. (:

Hi all, I have been searching for a specific alignment tool for a while now. I am looking for a pairwise/multiple alignment tool that will display the similarity with a white/gray/black shaded background. It looks like its not easy to find one. This is the kind of output I am looking for: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Hemagglutinin-alignments.png Looks like this is not a feature of the standard tools. Does anyone has a suggestion? Thanks in advance! Hydrazin

Human/animal hybrid embryos are being created in laboratories in the United Kingdom for stem cell research. I've heard that stem cells are likely to cure certain illnesses like Parkinson Disease (I didn't know about it until hearing Michael J. Fox was diagnosed with it), but to get stem cells requires taking them from human embryos. There are scientists in the UK making parahuman embryos, which could help supply enough stem cells medical use, but some still consider it abortion. Now I'm not sure weather I should be for or against the process, so I would like to hear your thoughts on the subject before making up my mind.

I've glanced at the Game Theory Wiki a few times and I've thought to look into the more prominent features of its application, but I have never actually done so. The Wiki suggests that it is not uncommon to apply the theories within biology. I can see how this might be applied in the field, and for my own purposes it would be interesting to see how this might be applied in terms of microbiology; cells, protists, viruses etc. Just curious if anyone has had any exposure to this?

At present, there are a number of research labs that are focused on the creation of cells that are genetically male but have been produced from eggs. Alternately, they are also trying to create sperm from female eggs. If the research proves to work, the consequences are particularly important for gay and lesbian couples that wish to have children. The idea is an extremely controversial one that mixes in with politics, religion and ethics. The experiment was widely reported in the news but has not yet been published or successfully replicated, the work does still show that potential for same-sex reproduction exists, and it will likely spur further research in this area. Th…

If most/all of the organelles between cells of a species are the same, what then determines how a cell specializes? I know that the end effect is to be able to excrete various proteins, but what signal pathways ensure that a cell is secreting the proteins relevant to its specialization? How are stem/meristem cells differentiated to have a specialization, and what do stem/meristem cells have that specialized cells do not?

  20. When you are making an agarose gel at one point the mixture of agarose and water might be heated in a microwave. Why would you also put in a glass of water in the microwave? I think some how the glass of water some how prevents the agarose mixture from boiling over. But how does this really work? This may be a chemistry physics question.

Anyone who is familiar with Gramicidin (antibiotic) assay? I have been performing this test for quite a while, but I could not come up with a valid result. I am using USP as my reference for the procedure (Spectrophotometry). The problem is, the turbidity of my assay do not have a trend even if I increase the concentration of the antibiotic used for the Standard. I am working with a pure culture of Enterococcus hirae, and all the materials used was sterilized, so I am confident that my problem with turbidity is not caused by contamination. Any insight will be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I just joined because I've been a lurker here for a long time, and I'd like to see what you all think of this..as i think it is extremely important This book has had a huge impact on my life and i think the implications for this theory (and the evidence supporting it) are ginormous. I've done extensive self experimentation and research and it seems to be well supported, which is evident by the growing number of eminent scientists supporting such a young theory. This is basically an epigenetic idea of how the hormones and chemicals in food have affected our evolution. The book is Left In The Dark, by Tony Wright. Lots of info on his site: http://leftin…

Since about a month ago I have been having muscle spasms through out my whole body, primarily near joints. In the last week I have also had a sharp pain followed by numbness in the right half of my left hand, middle and pointer finger and thumb. This morning I had paresthesia (pins and needles) in the exact same place where I had the numbness. The muscle spasms are not painful, or extreme, but are visible. I estimate there is something wrong with my nerves, but have no idea what is precisely causing it. I am not stressed and have been getting adequate sleep of 8-10 hours. Would you recommend me seeing a doctor? Is this meant to be posted in biology? Thanks for the con…

I have been getting incredibly interested in the universe and how it works lately, including astrophysics, biology, and where everything comes from. I've come to learn that many of the materials that make up the Human body, such as calcium and iron, can only be formed during nuclear fusion in stars. All those materials then get scattered throughout the universe when these stars explode, which is how they eventually came to form the Human body. So, in essence, all of us originate from the super nova explosions of stars. Now my question is what happens when different animals on Earth, including Humans, mate? That baby now has calcium in his bones and iron in his blood. …
