In the debate about our origins the crucial question is: What is the simplest thing (system or process) that needs intelligence to exist or to operate? If we can answer this question, then we can conclude that all things that are more complicated than that, must have been created by an intelligence. I claim that the simplest thing is a thermodynamic cycle process (now please forgive my english, since I am not native English speaker and my terms may vary...) that goes through two points. Example Carnot process without transfer of heat, leaving only two adiabatic processes. I cant give mathematical prove of this and can only say that this has been proved experimenta…

nothing has had the same affect on me as the mechanics of nuclear reactions. its almost a scared but respectful state of awe. even to drive past a plant, you look and think about the kind of power that is being harnessed and controlled. its one of those things that makes you go silent and you just stare. with a million things running through your mind, and at the same time nothing running through your mind. a feeling that nothing else can produce. like seeing a vial of smallpox in containment or something. Ive also always been amzed with Ebola virus and Smallpox. its inexplicable. there are no words... nuclear fission and "dark biology"

No one would happen to know where I can find any, would they? I know about this by the way: http://www.steffenfoerster.com/research/ethogram.htm The problem is it's not extensive; it only has social behaviors.

say you are going on an outing and want to keep the cold-cuts cool in the summers heat... which will provide a functional benefit to the greater degree, ice frozen in a solid block and placed into the cooler or crushed ice poured into the same type cooler? The lid of course would be closed and consider all other parameters would be more or less equal.

Hello all. At my job, we have a problem. Our APC batteries are bad and would cost 250 for new ones. But we have a "battery backup" the past compiney left us with 8 car batteries. thay have it so it is 58 volts and so is the charger. We were going to just make the batteries 12 volts and the max AH. and get a very good inverter. But that would require us to reduce the voltage from 58V to about 14V with a max of 12 amps possibly going through. Does some one know of a cheep way of doing this?

  7. I am running a couple five-minute Web-based experiments. If you could please participate, that would be wonderful. We're trying to collect data from a very large number of subjects from various backgrounds: http://vacognition.wjh.harvard.edu/participate.html I put up new experiments fairly regularly, so if you feel like being particularly helpful -- or if you just find it interesting -- you can bookmark the page or join the mailing list. I have a Google Groups mailing list I use *ONLY* to announce new experiments or results from old experiments. You won't get spammed, I promise. Thank you all very much, Joshua Hartshorne Visual Cognition Laboratory Harvard …

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum. I'm wondering if anyone can confirm this: if you burn some "ward" papers, put it into water and then spray the mixture around the house - is that gonna be a health hazard? My mother's into some kinda Chinese mysticism or whatever, and this is supposed to create a protective barrier or something. I don't think fine ashes of burnt paper sprayed with water around the house is gonna be harmful, but I wanna make sure. Besides, I have no idea what kinda dodgy material those "ward" papers are made from. Will try to find out though.

  9. what is your most hated science mathematical problem? whether it be in chemistry, physics, etc. maybe you even have one for both. It would be interesting to find out what people find the most annoying and whether alot of people feel the same about the certain mathematical calculations etc.

I got this idea when i set my alarm (on my pc for big sound as i have them conencted to a home theatre setup in my room) to play killer queen very loud at 5 in the morning. I was dreaming during the alarm sound (for about two seconds before i awoke). I remember talking to my uncle then i heard the tapping of the drumstick on the rim of the drum for about a second and i remeber being startled by this phantom sound comming from know where. I woke almost immedietly. So i got this idea. Im sure were all familiar with the fact that an outside stimulus can influence a dream if it isnt enough to wake you. So im wondering if i set my pc to play a sound file with some kind…

Hello i was wondering if anyone new what causes what i saw tonight. Myself and some friends were out at siesta key beach. The tide had been very high but was going down. it left rather large bodies of water up shore which is common. But what wasnt common was the amount of seafoam, and what it did. When you touched the seafoam it illuminated. The foam was a very bright blue-green. Also when you touched it the illumination went out from where u touched it like a shockwave. It was quite amazing and beautiful. But i have no freakin idea what it was. Ive been looking online and cant find anything about it. So if anyone can find out please let me know! Thanks

Why does a setting sun make the sky turn different colours to how it usually is? My guess it that when the sunlight is reflected off the bottom of clouds, rather than shining directly at the earth, it's coming at us at a different angle so the refraction by the sky is entirely different, but, I honestly have no real idea.

hi everyone! I'm a translator, doing a translation of a scientific paper, and I need your help as specialists. Hope this won't be considered a flame here. Do you make any difference between strain and deformation in technical discussions, especially in scientific writing? I saw different usages, e.g., Wikipedia says strain is a geometrical expression of deformation, while Britannica uses them interchangeably. Is it correct for a scientific paper to say that "... deformation of ... is calculated..." or is it more accurate to use "described" or "characterized" instead? I often run into this issue in my work and don't know who I should trust. So, where's the trut…

Hi guys, I run a popular science website "The Mr Science Show - your weekly prescription of popular science." http://www.mrscienceshow.com The idea is that we talk about science in a social context - so the issues people want to hear about - in a fun and entertaining manner. The website has been around for a year now and so contains quite a lot of information, from more serious topics on the events of 2006, to "The Travelling Scientist" and "The Beer Drinking Scientists" series, in which we look at the science around us, on the road, or over a beer chatting to people down at the pub. There is also a series on love, plenty of links and resources. All of thi…

At breakfast the other day, one of our number expressed concern that if we keep sending things off into space, we will, one day, find that the mass of the Earth has been reduced to the point that it could affect it's ordit around the sun. We all scoffed at this and I got into it by saying that, if anything, the opposite is true because Earth is constantly gaining mass in the form of meteorites impacting here at a much faster rate than we are losing mass due to the exportation of matter through our space program. I hurried home to conduct a search to prove my point, but to no avail. Two questions; Was I right in my assertion? And where can I find scientific est…
