I need to memorize the 20 amino acids, preferably by Monday, or failing that sometime within the semester. Also the matching 1 and 3 letter codes. I suppose I could just keep writing them down until I remember them, but I was hoping there's an easier way. Maybe an online quiz? Oh, and also the 5 nucleic acids, but I more or less have those memorized already.

I was thinking, I joined this forum back in high school (2005) and now I will be attending grad school. Granted, I don't post a lot (0.14 posts per day, hah) - but I figured I'd post for this. I will be going to a 1 year Social Psych grad program (Masters), specifically involved in Group Dynamics and Influence. You may see more of me around, since I may be asking for help regarding some topics (testing out ideas) - seeing as I have to write a thesis and I'm not entirely sure what that will be. Anyhow, just figured I'd share

Hi all, I'm new to the forum, but am interested to know how many people are involved in programmes to inspire young people into science? I coordinate the STEM Ambassadors programme (more information at: STEM Ambassadors information ) in Northumberland, and we're always on the lookout for new people to help us to spread the message of careers in science. I know a lot of university's have their own 'outreach' programme that many researchers are involved with, but this is a national scheme that incorporates industrial based scientists, researchers and basically anyone interested in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subjects who could be a good role …

Hello everyone, I am a biochemistry major and I will be graduating this coming December. My GPA is 3.5 (due to a bad year because of personal problems) and I have been doing research since 2006, thus, as you can tell, I have a lot of research experience in areas like organic chemistry, immunology, molecular bio. and biochemistry. I had planned to start applying for my PhD now, during this fall semester, to start the PhD program on Fall 2011. However, lately I have been considering the option of getting a MBA instead. Actually, my boyfriend was the one who came out with the suggestion of getting an MBA because I was telling him that I was getting bored at my current job…

We can learn math and science by taking lectures or reading books or having a discussion with friends. There are many channels we can learn through. Especially, nowadays online resources are used extensively among students. Among the online resources for learning math and science, I pay much attention to documentaries explaining difficult concepts in math and science in an easy-to-understand way. http://www.infocobuild.com/books-and-films/science.html

How should I go about studying for a practical exam at the undergraduate level? I've tried talking to my TAs, and they have not given me much information. I find that awfully surprising, really. As I'm not sure if I should be focusing on labbook problems or if I will actually be replicating experiments we've already done in lab. The TAs just won't tell me. I've even asked them if they had to take practical exams in the past, and they wouldn't give me much information even then. So, I'm thinking, "WTF, man?" I have two practical exams: 1. Genetics practical exam 2. Microbiology practical exam I have practical exams to take at the end of the semester. I'm not …

Question: I am totally 100% switching fields at the moment. Couldn't really switch any more so. I got a BA in Molecular, Cellular, and Dev Bio. The reasons? Well honestly, I have no idea. I finished college and realize that I hated everything that I had done for the past four years, and have no desire to work in biology. I have always loved technology so I am switching to engineering. The first love of my life has been computers so I plan on hopefully going to grad school for computer engineering (through boston universities innovative LEAP program). I allready know how to write some computer code (C++ html javascript css a little java) and back in …

Does Science consist of facts? Hey guys and girls, I have to write a 1500 word essay on the following questions, Does Science consist of 'facts'? If so, what are these facts, and how can we be sure that they are 'true' or 'correct'? If not, what does science consist of? Can anyone offer any advice or any comments on this? ....

Unfortunately I'm still dredging my way through high school. Once I'm finished with this institution, I'm looking to get degrees in philosophy, physics, and mathematics. I'm not sure which one of those I would want a PhD in. Probably philosophy. (Money isn't an issue.) Anyways, I really need to accelerate my education. Philosophy I have no problem studying on my own, because it's relatively accessible. Mathematics and science is a little bit more difficult to break into, it seems. Obviously popular science is a way of learning about science, but it's only useful up to a point, for someone who will be studying science in University. And I don't think there is such a thing …

Hey guys, Just looking for some general career advice about my area of speciality. I better be sure to clear somethings up first since a lot of the user base here seems to be American (So please excuse my newbie-ness); I'm Irish so we essentially declare our majors from when we enter college however I'm a little bit more flexible as I'm studying general Science in Trinity College meaning I get to choose between ~18 different areas of science as my major. Anyway, as the title suggests I'm trying to decide between Genetics and Neuroscience as my areas of speciality with the view of going into something like Pharmacogenomics or Neuropharmacology research dependin…

Hi everyone, We're planning a party and we'd like to make some science demos to use as centerpieces at the dinner tables. Ideally, these would be: - interactive - pretty - fairly cheap or easy to make ourselves (<$100) - safe and not messy For example, one idea is a ferrofluid display cell along with some magnets, but it's hard to get good information on how to make these. An open dish of ferrofluid would be too likely to lead to disaster. Another idea is something like this demonstrating eddy currents: http://www.exo.net/~...ngincopper.html but that seems to be prohibitively expensive with the price of copper as it is now. Any other ideas wo…

Easier to get into Grad school with 2 degrees? Is it? Currently Im majoring in Psychology with a minor in Sociology. I was thinking however, getting a major in Sociology as well would be beneficiary - although it may take an extra semester. (Currently Im a 1st semester Sophomore). Just wondering what you thought. I'll probably go through with it, but as far as grad school is concerned, will it help a lot? for example, if it was between me and someone else, and it looked like this: Kid - Major in Psych, minor in Soc. 3.8gpa. Me: Major in Psych and Soc. 3.2gpa Still think they would take me over the other guy (even though he has a higher gpa)? …

Hey! It's been a while since I've posted here. Anyways, I've been contemplating on how to create a "training" course, so to speak. It would be designed to help facilitate my learning of topics such as physics, as well as to become very proficient at them. Much like the way people train for physical sport, but instead applied to the mind. The reason I would consider it a "training course from hell" has largely to do with the fact that it is designed to be, well, hellish. Some ideas include: -Doing 750 physics problems a week, in order of increasing difficulty. One wrong answer means that I would have to start over. -Doing some complicated Boundary Value P…

I am an entering as a freshman in UT austin and I was thinking about going into neurology but I wasn't sure then so I chose architecture but now thinking about it again. I'm thinking about getting into neurology. The problem is I don't want to wait too long when thinking about what I want to do. I like art and design and coming up with ideas but at the same time as weird as it sounds I always been wanting to learn about the brain and have become very interested in the subject of the brain. I have enjoyed watching the health channel more than the design shows I see in home and garden network. I've been interested in health almost as long as I have been interested …

I've been talking to a graduate student as of late, and she advised that I find a professor and/or graduate school with a decent amount of money. Sure, that'd be nice, but I'm uncertain of how feasible that is or how well I could pull it off. In summary, I talked to her, and she described her experiences so far with not having a lot of money for her research, having to do and make her resources by herself, and saying that some things that getting done an experiment that might take her a year or two could be done at a different school under a different professor for perhaps 6 months. Furthermore, she mentioned that getting a Ph.D would be much easier and faster with a…

Q about teaching gravity Hello I came across a secondary school physics teacher recently who said that he explicitely teaches his pupils that gravity is not a force. His reason for this is that gravity is the field and weight is the name given to the force of gravity. This is giving me quite a headache for the following reasons: Pros of teacher's argument: 1) He's right, as in nothing he said was factually incorrect. 2) Looking at the big picture, its kind of good that the teacher had a deeper knowledge of the subject than most science teachers. Cons of teacher's argument: 1) He's just trying to be a smart-rse. I have a physics degree and no-one…
