I have attempted talking to the counselor appointed to me at school several times. But trying to explain to her that I started college a year ago with maybe a solid 5th grade education and have come this far so fast and want more then associates, doesn't seem to compute with her. I do understand why she feels my goals are unrealistic and I have no desire to pour my heart out to her and try to explain why I am 28 with these types of aspirations. But I will give a brief summary that withholds the gory details so maybe you can understand my position. For starters, all fields of science have always been my true passion and interest. I have always been able to figure out h…

This topic probably frequents these boards but perhaps a new emphasis can reinvigorate discussion. Digital and social media technologies are integrating into what seems to be every conceivable arena of human endeavor. As public opinion of education withers talk of reform is inevitable. The sweeping trend is to apply these "messianic" technologies to all that is old or to all that is broken in society. "Technologizing" has become a kind of social duct tape. It is an increasingly attractive tool for reform in any public institution; but why? There seems to be little justification for this frenzied social movement when no clear and substantial evidence of students increa…

It's pretty well known that America has a problem with science education. Not many countries elect people to their Congressional science committees that believe that Evolution and Climate Change are false. Science education (like the rest of the American system) is "teaching to the test", so instead of teaching how to figure out general approaches, they are taught specific equations for each type of problem. There's no problem solving in the solving of physics problems. Students aren't taught how to do science, they're taught how to memorize equations and swap out the numbers. Instead of being given the basic equations and being taught how to derive what they need, t…

Hi! I am in my first physics class ever in my freshman year of university. My professor lectures fine but never covers formulas for the class in lecture and the book doesn't help much either, nor the homework assignments (I do them all hoping they will help). So I ask, could the members of this website maybe put together a formula sheet, like basic need to know formulas? Maybe even categorize them accordingly to their fields in physics. Anything will help!

I am a current student at Texas A&M University. I am changing majors from Industrial Distribution to (speculatively) Aerospace Engineering. The only thing holding me back is the "natural intellect factor". Basically want to know that if I put forth the effort and time, will I succeed? I have an outright passion for physics and anything space related. Because of this, I would specialize in astronautics rather than aeronautics. I enjoy my physics and calculus classes and am an A-B student with around a 3.4 GPA. My dream, as most other aerospace engineers with specialization in astronautics, is to develop and design any sort of craft, satellite, vehicle that would…

I know there are a lot of universities now offering courses online, but my education in math and physics is sadly very limited and I don't know what order to take the courses in. Could someone recommend a place where I could find the courses neatly in order in one palce (if there is such a place) so I wouldn't have to go to disparate places for disparate subjects (algebra on youtube, probability on this website, x on y etc.)? I've looked at the Khan Academy, but it seems a bit to slow for me.

So I've just received my first acceptance letters for graduate school; it looks like this fall I'll be heading off to study statistics. I'm finishing my undergraduate physics degree this semester with an undergraduate thesis on statistical methods of mapping radiation. Obviously graduate school will be somewhat different than undergrad, but all I ever hear are jokes about never sleeping or grooming. So: Any advice for a future grad student? Anything I should mentally prepare for before plunging in? Should I flee for my life?

Hi, what are your favourite science podcasts? I currently listen to: * http://omegataupodcast.net - long and detailed interviews * http://www.twis.org/ - Science news * http://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/series/timc - Science and comedy mixed. Do you know of other good podcasts? I particularly like long-form interviews with experts as in omega tau. Looking forward to your replies Lukas

I have posted this in three different places, on this forum, as it is relevant to all three. Anyway, the deadline for applying to uni (15th Jan) is almost here and I can't decide between three courses I would like to do, which are; - Biomedical Science - Biomolecular Science - Microbiology I would appreciate some help on picking a course, as I can't decide between the three. Biomedical and Biomolecular science on all the university websites, that I have been on, appear to be almost the same. I would appreciate it if I could get some clarification on the differences between Biomedicine and Molecular Biology, as I need to pick a course for Uni and can't decide between …

Hey Everyone, my brother-in-law and I started a YouTube channel called The Sci Guys where we do cool, do-it-yourself science experiments. Here's a link to the first episode, we would really appreciate if you would check it out and leave us a comment with what you think. We want to try and help spread science as a fun activity in families with kids to assist with their science education. The first episode is on Electrolysis: http://www.youtube.com/thesciguys/ If you like it a lot please subscribe and share it around to help spread science into every home!!

I am interested in changing my career to one in computer science - web development or web design. I have an undergrad in Interior Design and a masters in Adult Education. I have always been strong in math, and enjoyed it, and have had the opportunity to work on SharePoints and a CMS system - just from the front end though. In getting an education or credentials to get started down this path, would an Associates Degree at a community college be a good way to get entry into the field? Or would that be rather useless, and I should look into a Bachelors instead? What if I learned programming on my own?

THE EDUCATION DECEPTION What’s wrong with the system? It doesn’t take a genius to understand that the world’s system doesn’t work. Many countries have a westernized educational system that has now been established for many years, where governments spend untold millions of dollars to educate each new generation. Through the education system, people are made to form opinions based on what the system teaches them, and are taught not just what to think, but how to think. The goal being this - to conform the person through the system, to become an educated ‘drone’, for they do not want a people who are independent, but conformed to the system. This means crea…

Hello! I'm a 14 year old with a huge interest in physics. At my current age we aren't really learning much about physics at school, but I really want to get into it. I'm pretty beginner with physics as I've never really learnt it, but as I said, I want to change this. I want to learn physics in a way that I could approach astrophysics later on as primarily, space is my big interest. I am prepared to buy books as at school, I have long lunchtimes and break times which I could use as an opportunity to read, learn more and at the same time, makes things more fun for myself. I consider myself fairly literate so I'm not too fussed about the level of English knowledge involv…

i, My name is Cathy Ennis and I am a post-doctoral researcher in the Computer Science department in Utrecht University. We are currently running a perceptual experiment on the animation of a virtual character (to be used in a serious game) and would be grateful of any participants we could get. Details of the experiment: You will be asked to view a series of short animations of a 3D Character (60 in total). After viewing each animation, you will be asked to rate the motions based on four parameters, which will be explained at the start of the experiment. Duration: It will depend on how long it takes you to answer each question, approx. 1 hour. I have included…

Unfortunately, I've become a casulty of the economy and have been unemployed for the better part of a year now. And, it's not for lack of sending out job applications. So, I'm debating the eternal question faced by those who have a Masters, but are unemployed....To continue applying for jobs or go back for the PhD I didn't finish...? The highlights of my background: M.S. in Genetics (B.S. in Zoology/Genetics before that) M.Ed in Higher Education Curriculum Design Many years experience in college teaching (from being a TA thru community college instructor; teaching freshman thru grad students). Experience with non-profits & public education/outreach programs in…
