Seen any good sculptures made from almonds lately? Note: no other nut-based sculptures may be discussed under threat of the ban-hammer!

I'm posting this here because it seems there is not a place for a scientific discussion of ghost above. I believe one day we will be able to scientifically prove the existence of ghost. I believe this because so many people have observed this phenomena over the years and there is some speculation if changes on the physical world that accompany the sightings of ghost can be measured. I would like to open a discussion on this, and where ghost may be/come from. If science allows for the existence of other dimensions or even parallel dimensions, could not ghost come from one of these? Even though ghost cannot be proven at this time with our present scientific unde…

I'll open another one for your consideration. I don't know much about this subject and I haven't tried it. But for years the U.S. government military had a remote viewing program to try to find out what our enemies were up to and to help the guys in the field with their missions. Basic info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remote_viewing It seems to me that at some point there had to be real scientist who thought it was a good idea to try this stuff.. the Government just don't spend millions of dollars on a project that it feels is just a bunch of bull. I am sure the Government would have used and consulted the top scientist they could find. What do you thin…

http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/09/04/washington.towers.terrorism/index.html?eref=rss_topstories The Earth Liberation Front has struck a blow against the evils of AM radio, toppling transmission towers! No, they weren't mad at Sean Hannity and Michael Savage... they were worried about AM radio causing a "higher rate of cancer", "harm to wildlife", and get this... "that the signals have been interfering with home phone and intercom lines." In the words of Jon Stewart... *rub eyes* WHAAAAAAAAAA?! These people are retarded.

therory. And did some guy named Maxwell and his equations have something to do with it. There are many websites such as: http://farshores.org/rm04ein.htm and many others that seem convinced this is true. Are they lying or not ? ...ds

I was thinking. If you have two people sitting at their computers with webcams pointed at themselves, they each see the other person on their screen. Then one of them puts the webcam picture on fullscreen, and points his camera at the screen. Person A will see himself on the screen, while person B will still see person A. What happens if person A also switches to full screen, and points his webcam at the screen? Note that I mean in such a way that only the screen is visible in the outgoing signal, no background of the room or something. What do they see? We finally came to the conclusion that you either see what's reflected from the screen, or if for some reason there is …

Would they revolt or would they just exist? Keep in mind that I'm using the term Artificial Intelligence to mean something that can truly think and LEARN on its own, and rationalize. Not with logics or control systems, but something akin to true human thought. Yeah, maybe I did just see The Matrix on TV...but I still think it's a good question. I don't know if this is psuedoscience or not. Apologies if it is.

On August 31, the Onion published an article where Neil Armstrong admitted that he was now convinced that the moon landing was a hoax. http://www.theonion.com/content/news/conspiracy_theorist_convinces_neil?utm_source=a-section Chuckles all round at the silly conspiracy theorists. Unfortunately two Bangladeshi papers didn't know that the "Onion" was not "a genuine news site" and printed the story as fact. From the BBC report; http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/8237558.stm You really couldn't make this stuff up, could you?

Hi, I've come across "The Hedonistic Imperative" (hedweb.com) and reading some of the stuff it certainly sounds interesting. It's a site about paradise engineering created by David Pearce, a British philosopher and abolitionist (believing in the abolition of suffering). I'm not too sure what to think of it at the moment, at first the idea sounds rather revolting, but the more I read and think about it the better it sounds. My mind's not totally made up yet, I'll probably be reading this for a while. So, what do all of you think?

Fellow members of the boards community within a reasonable distance of NY City. I've found that a good many of us live near enough to the Big Apple that if we'd like to plan a gathering to meet others who post on these boards, it's doable. And so...here's a call for just that kind of meeting. A simple pot-luck in the afternoon or later in Central Park, on August 30th (a Sunday). If you're interested, please "sign in" below. Or, vote for option labeled "I'll be there -- anonymous" in the poll at top. Also check off an ideal time for you. The schedule most voted for becomes the time we start the picnic. If you have any ideas to offer, please do. The…

On another message board I read that the NOVA program on PBS is going to show something on intelligent design, to comply with their wish that it should treated "fairly" on such shows designed to inform the general public about science. Unfortunately for the ID'ers, this upcoming show is intended to DEBUNK them yet again, and this time in front of the masses. It is going to primarily cover the events that happened in 2004 when a town in Penn, known as Dover, the science teachers refused to promote ID as a science or an alternative theory. Of course, this sparked a lawsuit from the fundamentalists and everything became a big mess. Needless to say, they lost and ID …

When I was reading a blog today, I saw a post about a sweater which had the complete periodic table on it. The only problem is that it was an ugly colour. It's my housemate's birthday coming up, and he's doing a PhD in genetics. Does anyone know of any sciencey/geeky gifts online that I could get him along these lines? Also, if I saw something cool enough, I would probably get something for myself. Oh, and I should probably note that he already has just about every one of those Giant Microbe toys! Many thanks!

So, i've had this idea of a live debate between members of this forum. not on the forum or IRC but on skype or teamspeak. seeing as we haven't had many decent debates in a long while. the debate would have to have a science angle at the very least(purely scientific would be prefferable) and should try to avoid political debate as much as possible(a debate about some governments policies on science would be boring as hell to people not from that country). we'd have to appoint a moderator and a panel of judges to decide on the victor. the debate would be open for everyone to listen in on(and ask questions if we have a section allowing questions from the floor).…

Alight i have been wanting to start one of these for a long time:-) For all of you that are not familar with The Good The Bad and The Ugly... heres how it goes, first some one posts a good such as "My son just got into college." the the next person does a bad "He had an affair with his english teacher." and then the next person does an ugly like "So did I." and it repeats over and over and over until a moderater finds a reason to close the thread. So let the threading BEGIN. Good: I just got a new laptop.
