Recently I came up with Microsoft Academic Search and find some interesting features that I think are worth to know:eyebrow: Especially it has some useful tools that may help you in writing papers, choosing conferences or journals to submit articles, getting to know scholar ranking and co-author relationship, etc.. This message is limited to cover the author features only, okay let’s see… Author ranking In Microsoft Academic Search homepage, by clicking the Authors tab, popular authors overall/in certain domain show up. Such guideline provides shortcut for us to update the most popular/active authors in a specific field. We can also get a list of top-r…

I'm thinking of getting the most out of gaming from my laptop with a new installation of Windows XP. I won't be browsing the Internet, reading emails or downloading and running files; just playing online mmo games. Is it okay if I don't install any security software (antivirus or firewall) and also do not update my windows (keep it at sp1) so to waste as less resources as possible? (I will be running hijackthis occasionally to make sure nothing fishy is going on)

Hi all - I am currently a forensic mental health counselor and am considering a change to the computer science/IT field. I am interested in networking and web development. My questions are: 1) How are online degree's looked at within IT? In mental health and social work they are generally frowned upon. 2) From what I have seen, a bachelor's would be the best place to start. Do you have any recommendations as to what to look for in a good program? 3) How are the education received by Devry, ITT, etc regarded in the IT field? Thanks for your insights!

Hi all. I'm working on a little simulation-like game, basically an excel spreadsheet on steroids that relies on player interaction and creativity for the fun bits. Ignoring whether or not the game itself would be fun, I've come across a couple of questions. If you need more information, feel free to either ask for it here or check out the pertinent posts on my blog to see if you can see where I'm going. First question is about JButtons. I have a series of buttons, standard "add one," "fill," "subtract one," and "empty" buttons. They're to be labeled simply with "+", "+ +", "-", and "- -" respectively. The problem is it seems that the JButton is set to have a default r…

Hey all. I'm a prospective computer science student who wants to get acquainted with some of the basic mathematical and theoretical concepts before I enter said program. I'm looking for books that will introduce me to some of the rigor involved with the introductory topics (namely algorithms and data structures, compiler theory), but will not drown me in a deluge of terse, academic-for-the-sake-of-academic language. If you have any suggestions, please share them. Also, I have a couple of questions about the mathematical rigor of those introductory topics. What level of mathematical ability would be adequate to acquire at least a solid grasp? Do the mathematics make he…

Fascinating news out of Redmond today -- apparently Windows Phone 7 will NOT support user application multitasking. It will be limited in basically the same way as the iPhone OS. I've been telling students and friends for over a year now that the fact that Apple limits this in the iPhone OS is a GOOD thing. General reactions have ranged from tolerant nods to outright scoffing, but I've maintained that the theory is sound from an HCI perspective, from a safety perspective, and even from a "common sense" perspective. So I'm feeling a little vindicated to see this news from Microsoft, because apparently they agree. Ironically, the rumor mill has it that iPhone…

hi, I'm doing my master of bioinformatics right now, but gradually i found that I became more interested in the computer or the IT part rather than the bio part. and i think the computer science kind of fits me so I am considering a PhD degree on the computer science or IT right now. but i was not majored in computer related subject when in university, so I want some information about the computer science or IT area in terms of its future, subjects and some suggestions on schools. I know i can google it but still your experiences are very valuable to me! thanks! by the way what i've done most are language programing with Perl.

I would like verified information on the amount of [harmful] radiation LCD monitors produce. If it is really varied, then I'd just like the amount of radiation production from HP w17e model [widescreen 17" i think]. Thanks!!! Your effort will be greatly appreciated.

I have 3 semesters plus the current semester I'm enrolled in, until I earn my Bachelors degree in CS. I'm allowed 2 concentration fields - I chose Systems Security, and Database. I really enjoy programming in C, and the only other language I have used thus far is Java - which wasn't very interesting IMO. I also did some programming with MARS(MIPS) which is Assembly Line programming - I was quite fascinated with it as well. I have recently looked into joining a CoOp (paid internship, 1 year of work is mandatory), and almost everything requires a person to know C++/C#, along with a bunch of other 'crap' (i know it's not crap, but i don't know what it is). I found…

could you use programmable chips to emplace a Java based operating system in a small computer device, like handheld. My idea was maybe a bit of flash memory that could hold some roms to start up the OS. On the electronics itself start up or the on button would fire the roms into something like a CPU or what not. Then the Java program could start to run. I would think programs could be nothing but sets of nested beans if that is possible, or new stuff and or upgrades to it. I think this could be reflected in the electronics layout also for the same purpose. I would like to think of flash memory for a "bios". Some kind of hardrive hardware also, in which …

Hi everybody, We all know that we can have random numbers by pressing #RAN or #RND button in calculators and there is such a command in computer programming languages that produces a random number. It's always been a question for me that how does a computer or a calc generate random numbers? Does it have a certain algorithm or sth?

What is the maximum memory locations that can be addressed by a chip with 20 address pins? (1) 20 (2) 262 144 (3) 524 288 (4) 1 048 576 (5) None of the above Can anyone tell me how I can calculate the memory locations? A memory has 1024 storage units with a width of 32. Suppose that the memory is byte addressable. What is the address of the highest addressable memory position? (1) 1023 (2) 1024 (3) 2048 (4) 4096 (5) 4095 Is the correct answer 4095 (1024x4(sets of 8 bits)) =4096-1=4095?? Is that correct?

Hi, Just thought I'd mention that Google's sponsoring a pretty cool contest run the the University of Waterloo to write AI for a tron game. You can write code in just about every language out there and with the starter packs it's really easy for someone who only knows a little programming to get started. You can check it out at http://csclub.uwaterloo.ca/contest/index.php. It runs until February 26 so there's plenty of time. As of right now I'm in 21st place (http://csclub.uwaterloo.ca/contest/profile.php?user_id=1556) and I'd love to see how everyone else compares. Good luck to everyone who tries!

Im a information science student, so i really have no backroung knowledge in compter science. I understand the basic process behind digital signatures but thats as far as it goes. I have a presentation to give on friday. Ill copy and paste it here. If you can help, please do. Im at wits end The Digital Signature Standard is computed using the following equations: r = (gk mod p) (mod q) s = (h(M) − xr)/k (mod q) Describe what the various symbols represent. (b) Write down and explain the equation(s) used to verify a signature. © The standard specifies that r must lie strictly between 0 and q. What might go wrong if an implementation does not check …

I was wondering how and when an instruction is turned into Volts. suppose I have: add ax,bx Now that is compiled into some bit sequence like 01010111 (e.g.). How do these bit get turned into 0 V and 5 V? What component is responsible for this? Thanks.

Hi all, I have a question. It's regarding chess software. The strongest playing chess playing chess program currently is Rybka 3 developed by Vasik Rajlich. Now there are two compiles of Rybka: there is a 32 version for 32 bit Windows and a 64 bit version for 64 bit Windows. I realized that the 64 bit version playes quite stronger than the 32 bit version. What is the reason for this? Why does the 64 bit version play much stronger?

For many years now I have been programing in "Turbo Pascal" I am used to it but I hate the limitations of the 16 colour graphics and being unable to use other applications. Is there another language that I could use, with the same structure and syntax of "Turbo" that would allow me to do more? I have tried 'C+' but the same limitations apply. I need a program that would also tutor me, or have examples.
