Psychiatry and Psychology

Manifestations of neurological disease, psychopathological states, and related topics

  1. Started by Conor,

Hey my names Conor and I'm fairly new to the forum. I'm a year 12 high school student. I take psychology as one of my subjects and when I leave high school I plan to study psychology at university. Last week in psychology we learnt about neuroplasticity, although apart from a quick introduction, a definition and some further information we didn't really cover much more on the topic. As year 12 psychology is very general and covers a lot of information but not in great detail, I was wondering if anyone has any interesting cases of neuroplasticity from people either close to them or people they have read about or seen in a video. I find it to be a very interesting topic…

  2. Volunteers Needed for a Research Study on The Genetic Bases of Cognition This study is run by investigators in the UCLA Department of Psychiatry at the Semel Institute. The goal of our research is to identify genes involved in memory and impulse control behaviors in healthy people in order to better understand how to improve diagnosis and treatment of mental illnesses involving deficits in these behaviors. Participation involves filling out several questionnaires and taking computer tests done from anywhere you access the Internet!!. It involves about 75 minutes of testing in total. Participation gives you chances to win an amazon gift-card. You must be betwee…

  3. Earlier I was telling people that - to me - a genius idea is one which is close but nobody thought of before. These people reacted by saying that I have exactly those type of ideas quite often which would make me - as a logical consequence - to a genius. In this moment I could not say yes or no, since I never figured out what a genius really is, I only thought about what a genius idea may be. And I have to admit I am a logical and creative thinker at the same time and think in a different way than most people, which often leads me to have ideas which many people don't see at first and become astonished after I point it out to them. With this thread I'd like to ask yo…

It is well known that feelings and mental status are dependent upon Chemical Substances found in blood and/or mind, if I am not wrong. What about neuronal (neural) role? What about internal interferences? And, why the feelings are being sensed in chest? Can any one advise.

I was just wondering, if there is fundamental feelings to which any general feeling state/action can be analyzed to? And, is there a drug to every state of feeling? Or, what is going there?!!!!

Show a man a picture of an attractive woman, and he might play riskier blackjack. With a real-life pretty woman watching, he might cross traffic against a red light. Such exhibitions of agility and bravado are the behavioral equivalent in humans of physical attributes such as antlers and horns in animals. “Mate with me,” they signal to women. “I can brave danger to defend you and the children.” So says Lei Chang, a psychologist at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. With colleagues there and at China’s Hebei University, Chang wondered whether military weaponry and paraphernalia hold the same seductive value as antlers, horns and risky behavior, allowing warriors to…

  7. Every once in a while, sometimes once a week, sometimes once a month just before i go to sleep i hear things in my head, mild auditory hallucinations, besides these hallucinations i have headaches every day, very strong headaches, more than 10 hours each day. Now i am going to take a PET scan to find the causes for the headaches and was wondering if at that exact time i am under the scanner and no headache is present and no hallucination, does the scanner still show anything that might be wrong with my brain?

  8. The idea of astrology was well accepted, for a time. Unfortunately it was discredited when scientists discovered that the sun did not - in fact - rotate around the earth, but the other way around. However I believe that the outside world and the internal world may, perhaps, be reconciled by way of Hermeticism. I must apologize in advance for the wide-ranging fields included in my theorizing, it gets a bit choppy here on in. "As above, so below" The concept of micro and macrocosms has pervaded science since its inception. When you break down your own body it is made of "intelligent" functioning organs, that work in sync with each other and perform function…

So I've been starting to slip so to speak ( those not familiar with me I am diagnosed schizophrenic) lapsing into dream like states and not being able to differentiate between being awake or dreaming. So yeah sounds like psychosis. just random acute attacks. This was the same way a long lasting psychotic episode developed within me before. (which was the first one in 11 years earlier ones were alcohol withdrawal) I do not take anti psychotic medication because I do not like the side effects associated with them and I recovered fine before without them. I'm just curious to other peoples take on my situation. Would a brief dosing of anti psychotics be worthwhile? …

Hello, I have been involved in Primal Therapy beginning in the early 1970`s. Because Primal had not been well developed at that time it was not a good time to start. I have struggled along with PT as a patient as best I could. Just recently I have been making some real progress again. So very much new information is now available and I am at a point in my life that I can accept repressed feelings more readily than before. Anyway, this is my first post in this forum and if there are other people interested in Primal Therapy please respond. It is the only solution I am aware of to unresolved troublesome feelings.

  11. This case was quite perplexing, especially due to the fact that two specialists for the plaintiffs completely agreed with two specialists for the defendant. Obviously, there are lots of facts about the case that I don't know about, but its pretty hard to see justice being done here without a more detailed explanation. Has anybody seen any really moving pertinent information?

As you are most likely aware of, when people are confronted with new ideas they break down the concepts and compare them with their fundamental preconceptions them deem as true/false. I, a amateur Psychologist enthusiast, wanted some professional nit picking on my newly found fundamental(not sure if my theory is incorrect and am somewhat concerned that it's a classic example of anchoring(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anchoring)) My theory is the following(Note: I already have the Natural Selection theory as one of my fundamentals and yes, am aware of the concept of absolutes): People have the inbuilt desire to socialise because people are more efficient in a …

So my Doctor has taken me off of Atypical anti psychotics (namely invega) and has decided to treat underlying anxiety with a drug called Celexa. I am actually rather excited because this drug is known to cause a condition called anorgasmia in which you have great difficulty achieving orgasm, since I thoroughly enjoy foreplay and orgasm denial (I like to be sexually aroused for long periods of time) I think it's a great choice. So I was just wondering if anyone knows first hand about these "side effects" , how often they occur in patients and perhaps a first hand account of anorgasmia cause it sounds like a wonderful condition to have for a guy like me. Thanks in advance.

I often wake up, with the memory of a dream very strong in my mind. However, within a few minutes, the memory slips away, and I can't remember what the dream was about. This is worrying, because the dream seemed, at the time, to be very striking and significant. But now it's lost. To avoid this loss, I could keep a notepad and pen by the bedside. Then on waking up, quickly write down details of the dream. Would that be a good thing to do though? If dreams quickly disappear from memory, perhaps that's because they're meant to. So keeping them in memory, by writing them down in a "dream diary", might not be good for mental health. Do any posters on thes…

  15. My name is Vinko Rajic . I am maybe the only really telepathic person in the world. You should not think that I could be Schizophrenic. Crazy but over 80% of all telepathic experiences are the same like for Schizophrenia. I can exchange voice, video, smell, people can move small move muscles on my body from distance and much more and all messages from me are transmitted to big number of people so I am a Mental Radio. One of the most advanced things I can do is to talk brain to brain( up to few kilometer) and it is very fascinating, works 100% and it is really talk direct brain to brain. What I find most fascinating my telepathy is nearly identical t…

  16. Talk about intelligent design: a new polymer-covered electrode has the potential to monitor and deliver drugs to out-of-sync brain cells. If trials in animals are successful, it could one day help people to control epilepsy. Neuroscientists implant microelectrode arrays in brains to eavesdrop on – and sometimes influence – the electrical activity of neurons. Why not chemically influence the brain alongside this electrical manipulation, thought Xinyan Tracy Cui at the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and her colleagues. So the team coated microelectrodes with an electrically conductive polypyrrole film. Then they loaded pockets within the film with different…

Hi, I've come across a way of inducing hallucinations of mythical/demonic beings which I am interested in from a psychological perspective. I have made a corny video with instructions on how to do it: I'm interested in sparking some debate about why the effect is so extreme - I have narrowed it down to a four stage process: 1. The optical illusion caused by fading visual input: Check this out it is also cool http://en.wikipedia....xler%27s_fading 2. With the lack of visual input the facial processing components of the brain override perception allowing the distortion of facial features in the image 3. Pulling an evil face causes the facial…

Faces of people who get tarred in the press or blasted behind their backs in snarky gabfests may literally stand out in the crowd. People find it particularly easy to see the faces of individuals about whom they’ve heard nasty or unpleasant gossip, reports a team led by psychologist Lisa Feldman Barrett of Northeastern University in Boston. “Encountering negative gossip about someone makes it easier to register that person’s face than neutral or positive gossip does,” says Feldman Barrett. Not only does the new study show that disapproving gossip quickly gets associated with a matching face, but that this connection operates outside conscious awareness, remarks co…

How do you define it? How do you gain it? What makes YOU respect a person? Is it the achievement or rather his presentation or even a combination of both? How do some people manage to not get respected to a point that people will dance on their nose, whereas other people get respect as soon as they enter the room? Suggestions, opinions, experiences - all welcome.

  22. I freaking know! Most people will say that it is impossible but many times during my life I have seen thigns happen right before they actually happen. Well actually ill remember somethign that happened but it dint its about to happen. This happens to me so many times it is not even important to me The thing is this appears to be because I have an ability to do many calculations in my head and come up with many outcomes so perhaps I just dreamt this things because i tought that it might happen, perhaps the breain is able to do such a thing, Maybe people predicting the future might just have th ability to o massive ammounts of calculations and perhaps make up the idea …

So, reading another thread last evening I came upon a post by our forum member needimprovement which contained the following. Go ahead and read it carefully, if you will: I wanted to talk about it, but I didn't want to take the topic of that thread too far afield. I messaged needimprovement about it, and he graciously agreed to discuss it in another post I'd here create, starting with the quote itself. The idea is that needimprovement will post below to expand on and clarify his thoughts--specifically, regarding psychology not being a science (though he may need to speak more broadly to make his points). Let me say a couple of things first--all or some of whi…
