In order for interspecies breeding to occur, does the number of chromosomes have to match? How are the nucleotides in the genes restructured? Can anyone explain what happens during interspecies breeding with examples?(eg: ligers) Thank you.

Ok basically what do you guys think about genetically modifying humans. Wouldnt it be great to modify our genes and have the eyes of a falcon, the Immune system of a crocodyile, and perhaps be able to grow limbs that we lose for one reason or another? Perhaps be able to run at extreme speeds like cheetas or even have a litle cute tale like a money

I was reading some psychological literature when I came across something that was discovered recently: Chromosome 6. Supposedly this chromosome has an influence on a human's intelligence. Do other creatures on Earth have this chromosome? What is the story behind this particular chromosome?

Have geneticists identified the alleles for the height phenotype? I've always tried to explain to my mom why I'm so short (despite my dad's relatively tall height) in terms of Mendelian genetics, but I'm sure that the height genes are much more complex. Could anybody give me an insight?

Hello People. I found this nice forum by search engines. I wrote e little text to (try) explain non-expert people the reasons we age. I don't know if my point of view if correct, and so I would appreciate graduate student in genetics or biology take little time to read it and return here their comments about. I think there are more profound reasons for aging than most TV programs or books try to explain to us, this te reason I wrote the text. Text can be found at http://www.meucat.com/vi.html Thanks very much Miguel A. Velilla Mula - Curitiba (Brazil)

What do you call a gene that is inherited in a dominant fashion but by only 50% of the F1's. 50% of the F1's will express the dominant trait and 50% will be of wild type. The 50% that are of wild type do not carry the gene and have proved to NOT be heterozygous for this gene. I can't call it a true dominant...so, what do I call this gene? NOTE: When this dominant phenotype is bred to another dominant phenotype all offspring express the dominant gene phenotype. When the dominant gene phenotype is bred to wild type 50% express the gene and 50% are wild type and are NOT hets for this gene. I have never ran into this type of gene and don't know what it is called.

Hope everyone has read the latest news on GM crops research. Its about 50/50 on the threads for and against but not all people realise the dangerous consequences of messing with nature, when our knowledge is so limited. We have really went head first into GM crops without tight controlled experiments and i find myself saying TOLD you so on other forums... The latest news is fields of GM oilseed rape....oh shocker!! its cross bred all on its own with CHARLOCK(you know that nice little livestock killer weed)anyway its now a super mutant resistant to pesticides ,how nice...oh never mind its also host to diverse crop eating bugs ...how soon before mutant ninja bugs are destr…

Here's the link: http://beta.news.yahoo.com/s/space/hangintherethe25yearwaitforimmortality Now, what do people think about it? Does it sound at all plausable? This guy seems very confident that in 25 years we will be able to stop aging. I'm really not sure how on earth this type of thing would work exactly, seems very interesting... I'm still not sure if we'll be able to stop aging. What do you think though? If this guy does figure it out, would you try it?

I'm starting my last year of school/college in a weeks time and will soon be looking for Universties. I already know I want to study Genetics and I Have a good idea of what Unis I will be applying to. I am therefore interested in doing some reading around the subject I want to study and would appreciate any books/websites people recommend. So far I have read most of Dawkin's books and 'DNA the secret of life' by James watson. My teachers have also recommended Matt Ridley's Genome and various works by Prof. Steve Jones. Anyone know of any others?

Hi, I probably don't know nearly as much about science as you guys do, but I had a question. Would it be possible (maybe in the future) to geneticly modify a human to I dunno say add wings on the back or something?

A family member (55 year old male) was recently diagnosed with 3 partially blocked arteries at the heart. The doctor explained that he would insert a shunt (I hope terminology correct), to keep the arterial walls from collapsing. He did 2 no problem but when he went to install the third it was then when he discovered that the body had already grown a vein around the affected section thereby providing a natural by-pass. The doctor told us he had never seen anything like it. Has anyone heard of this? Is this one of those moments where a possible mutated gene is responsible?
