DNA replication, Mendelian Genetics, mechanisms of gene expression, and related topics

  1. I am having a little trouble here. I am an undergrad attempting to revise and my lecture slides are awful. Can anyone take me through the process (each step) of identifying a causative gene in an autosomal dominant inherited disease. I would like to know how it was done say 15 years and how it is done now. Any help would be great. Thank you.

    In a chromosome (i.e. 2 chromatids), is it correct that there are 2 separate (and identical) molecules of DNA? On Wikipedia, the definition of chromosome is stated as "a single piece of coiled DNA" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chromosome), but I believe they mean a single chromatid is a single piece of coild DNA, correct?

    Hi, I was wondering if someone could explain the genetics behind DNA genealogy tests. What are the actual genetic markers or fingerprints that allow companies like ancestry.com to define someone as Northern European, or Native American, or East Asian, etc. etc. Thank you

    I made an IBS distance matrix using PLINK and would like to use this matrix to build a neighbor joining tree in 'Neighbor' of the PHYLIP package. When I read in the resulting matrix from PLINK in Neighbor and try to run then I get the following message: 'ERROR: diagonal element of row 1 of distance matrix is not zero' What goes wrong? Can I not directly use the PLINK output? How can I solve this problem? I'm not really familiar with these methods so I hope someone could help.

    Hi everyone I just recently done genomw wide SNP analysis on 20 N2 animals (SJL/ C3H cross) with over 300 polymorphic SNP`s. By using an affect only mapping strategy I plotted the number of mice which are heterozygotes against the loci of the mutation and found linkage on chromosome 8. Now the problem I have is that I have to calculate the threshold at p=0.05 for the number of animals.     This is related to another topic I posted in the 'Other Sciences' category. Basically, I am seeking a sort of 'how-to' guide for bio-engineering. Specifically, my interest lies in the engineering of plants- especially medicinal plants- and how to engineer a plant to produce a predetermined chemical in its foliage, stems, roots, flowers, fruit, etc. Keep in mind that I am an amateur scientist and have almost no equipment to use for this particular venture, I just want a basis for the upcoming experiments that I am planning, all of which involve the creation of 'new' plant organisms.     I've recently discovered my blood type is B+, but both my mother and my father have blood type O. I double checked it so I'm sure it's B. My parents did their blood types when they got married (at least). However, it's impossible for me to have B type when my parents both have O, because I must have gotten the B from one of them. So I'm worried that my father might not be my father. I look completely like my mother and there is no obvious resemblance with my father, apart from a wider nose tip and maybe the way my feet look.     I am trying to develop a laboratory test for genotyping patients on a SNP site. The polymorphism does not cause any change in restriction site (using online restriction mapping tool). The sequence is very repetitive and poor in GC. Allele specific primers are being tried but, looking for alternative solutions. Any suggestion is appreciated ? Thank you ahmer11

    Ok i have this idea. I remembered having this conversation with someone on the problems on genetic engineering in the usa. i think it was about how a big farming company sued a small faming company because there genetically engineered food what breed with there food ( and it was engineered to stop growth or something). and how the government is passing a law on genetic engineering.   15. I'm wondering if it is possible edit someone's genome (someone already living) to produce certain phenotypes, such as hair quality. Certainly, you would have to cancel out some existing genes.     I've come up with an idea to make transgenic flowers. My inspiration came from Glo fish, my fascination in the beauty of flowers, and being a sappy romantic. My idea is to microinject the seeds of a rose with Red Fluorescent Protein (RFP) so that when under a black light, the rose glows a beautiful red. My idea comes with a question: would this work? In the narrative, I would like for two traits to produce three outcomes. Consider the traits as F or E. Then, children from an F and an E parent would have F, or E, and very rarely, FE.     Hello everyone, I read about this protozoan about a month ago and it's been interesting me since. In one book, I read that it has affected about 50% of the world's population and on wikipedia I read only 33%. Whatever the number it's still extremely significant, from my knowledge it has shown to affect behavior so that comes down to over 30% of the world at least under the effect of behavioral changes or any of the parasites plethora of defects. I don't know a lot about this subject, but does anyone know quite a bit about it?

I mean after all the interaction happens about the interaction via proteins? Another question Im having is the inference of genetic interaction networks.
