  1. Hey, I was wondering if anyone knew the Mitochondrial content of different tissue types, particularly between the heart, liver and muscle. I just finished a lab where it was found that the succinate activity for the heart was higher, following the liver and then the muscle. I have been looking around and keep finding that muscle(skeletal) has more mitochondria which doesnt make sense to me because shouldnt its succinate activity be faster? Any help would be appreciated Jen

Today was a very hard day for me and my wife. We found out the pregnancy was in fact a incomplete molar pregnancy. Three doctors have made assumptions as to the cause of this, and nothing has been determined so far. The blood work has been submitted etc. And the removal is scheduled for 7 days out. I dont understand how a cause is not determined, Along with the removal being so far out. Any doctors (obyns) that have aquaintance with this issue please advise. Is this a long term problem? Is this going to happen again? And What causes this to happen?

  6. Does the use of corticosteroids have any effects in common with using adrenergic agonists, particularly the following? - Release of catecholamines - Arousal of the sympathetic nervous system - Stimulation of adrenergic receptors (directly or indirectly) I searched on Google Scholar for "corticosteroids" and "adrenergic" and found a few papers linking the two together, but overall my impression is that the only thing cortisol and epinephrine/norepinephrine have in common is that they are produced in the adrenal gland; otherwise they are essentially unrelated. Or have I totally misunderstood?

I am one of many Americans with a few extra pounds here and there (actually more than a few). I read recently that insulin (that which is naturally produced by the pancreas) inhibits the use of fat as an energy source. This causes our bodies to store fat rather than metabolize it. I wanted to know if there have been any studies on the average length of time insulin is in the body. Let's assume this is for non-diabetic human males. Does anyone know the answer, or know of any such studies regarding this issue? Thanks.

  9. Here is a picture of the Portuguese Man of war: http://www.aloha.com/~lifeguards/manowar1.gif This beautiful yet bizarre creature has tentacles that are extremely smooth, soft, tender, and silky. However, attached to these tentacles are nematocysts [stinging cells]. A nematocyst will inject poison into the bloodstream of the victim. The tip of the nematocyst will enter halfway into a capillary of the victim. Due to this, as soon as the poison is delivered, it rapidly spreads around the body via circulation. Here is what a human victim will experience if the poison of the Portuguese Man of War enters his/her bloodstream: 1. A tactile hallucination of sharp pai…

  10. Taken from wikipedia: 'Because of various expression of α₁or β₂receptors, depending on the patient, administration of adrenaline may raise or lower blood pressure, depending whether or not the net increase or decrease in peripheral resistance can balance the positive inotropic and chronotropic effects of adrenaline on the heart, effects which respectively increase the contractility and rate of the heart' No citation, so it could be pure poop. Can't find anything else about it on the net. How would that work? How common is it to have low blood pressure as response to adrenaline?

  19. Can mental faculties (imagination, reason, memory, etc.) function without input from the physical senses? Now, obviously we can use these mental faculties without "continuous" physical input (memory will retain past input, and we can work in the abstract with imagination+other faculties,) but if there was no original physical input to begin with, no information to use, can we still use our mental faculties? What does modern science say about this, and if you know, can you link to any sources?

About a week later, the knife washes up on the shore of the lake. A. -- Will it still be possible to extract DNA from this knife (blood, fingerprints)? B. -- And after two months? C. -- If the knife was covered in blood, will that blood still be visible somehow to the bare eye? Thanks in advance.
