Hey guys! Is there a "keyhole-access" from inside the mouth to the Bichat-Fat-Pad (=Buccal Fat Pad=Corpus adiposum buccae), without cutting the Muscle (M. buccinator) ? The Bichat-Fat-Pad is the buccal fat pad, lying deep in the cheek, under the M. zygomaticum major, superficial to the M.buccinator, caudal to the Arcus Zygomaticus. My idea: A small cut through the oral mucosa next to the Molar-Teeth of the upper jaw, accessing the Bichat-Fat through the little gap cranial of the M. buccinator and caudal to the Arcus Zygomaticum. Do you really have to cut through the Buccinator to get to the Bichat? You can get to the Bichat from above the M.buccinator as wel…

Hello, I'm looking for studies that show the effect of selective rearing on various brain functions. What I understand by "selective rearing" is the phenomenon by which certain groups of neurons (that is, certain brain centers) develop more fully (i.e. acquire more neurons devoted to performing the function of that group or brain center) when they are stimulated more frequently. As an example, I've heard it said that children who are reared in a music rich environment will be more likely to develop a talent for music because all the music they are exposed to stimulates the music centers in the brain and brings about higher-than-average development of that center. …

I have several questions about the menstrual cycle and would appreciate some clarification. Thanks. 1. Upon birth, a female child is born with primary oocytes. At puberty, primary ooctyes become secondary oocytes. Now it is at menstruation that each of the secondary oocytes are released from the follicle and the whole process occurs. My quest is whether all of the primary oocytes are converted into secondary oocytes at puberty or it is only that primary oocytes start to be converted at each menstrual cycle? I think that the latter is more correct and if so, that means that a female has both secondary and primary oocytes before mensturation. Is there a time or ratio th…

  10. Hi everyone, I'm new here, but it's an interesting place! I'm trying to find out why humans famously don't like the sound of chalk on a blackboard, knives scraping on plates, nails scraping on plastered walls, etc. The current 'accepted' theories for our reaction are a mixture between an evolutionary defence mechanism (the sounds share properties with animal screams) and the frequency of these sounds being within the range of human speech, hence our ears have evolved to amplify those frequencies. I've embedded six 'nasty' recordings and corresponding edits here - http://helios.hud.ac.uk/u0852268/ If anyone has a few minutes it would be great if you could t…

  11. I am currently completing a peice of work looking at an extra-retinal motion after-effect, after prolonged pursuit of a target in the dark on a black background followed by fixation to a stationary test (measuring MAE). I know that both cortical mechanisms responsible for pursuit and subcortical mechanisms responsible for optokinetic nystagmus are responsible for the MAE. However, I want to know how smooth pursuit systems can affect the suppression of the OKR response. A few papers suggest extra-retinal mechanisms during smooth pursuit (info about eye-movements) can suppress this but I don't know whether that implies that the subsequent afternystagmus (which is thought …

Based on what we know about cancer so far what can we use as real treatments for cancer/cancers? We know that a "crazed" cell does not get eliminated and begins to reproduce/spread among the area and in malignant cases infects tissue of an organ. We also know that better hygene/health habits such as eating and exercise can reduce your chances for this "crazed" cell from appearing in the first place. Other than our current western treatments lets try and see what we can produce outside of that to slow down, stop or prevent it from happening in the first place. Here is the wikipedia link for more information. Oh yes and other links to more information are much ap…

  15. In a compartment model (in which two chambers are separated by a selectively permeable membrane), equal amounts of KA (organic anion) and NaCl are added to opposite sides. Assume that K+ and Cl- are permeant, and Na+ and A- are not. At steady state, what would the relative distributions of ions be? Would there be a voltage difference between the compartments, and if so, which side would be negative? Would the osmotic pressure (number of solute particles per unit volume) be relatively balanced?

  16. Hi. I have been searching the interenet for possible reasons why essential fatty acid supplements effect my brain. Im talking about borage oils, flax seed oils, fish oils, ect ect. I have tried combined or one at a time and have tried cold pressed and pill forms. A little background. I have a very sensitive pituitary gland. About 4 years ago I had a pituitary tumour removed. I am familiar with many different types of headaches(sinus, pressure, meninjitus, eye pain, ect.). My pituitary is a little more sensitive now I believe(ie. I cant drink as much anymore without getting headaches.. as in I believe I am more likely to get headaches fro…

I'm looking for names of these conditions or case studies or anything that I can research. If anyone knows any documentaries on this subject that would be great, too.

I think there has been topics like this before but slightly different... I'm trying to find the main area of the brain that is linked to imagination. What I mean by that is, our everyday life style e.g. places we go / designs we see (clothing of shops etc.) / and even thinking of Heaven, looking at flowers and maybe even also occasions like Halloween. Our general visual perspective. As I have read that the occipital lobe is an area that affects our sleep / dream state. Also the Thalamus relating to visual interpretation and consciousness. But I am trying to pin point very specifically ! As above, people are either grounded in vivid reality or very imaginative with…

Hey guys, Due to a recent accident, I've gotten a black eye and a muscle in my neck has become increasingly bothersome. The only way to make the pain stop is to set my head to a 45 degree angle to the right. On top of that, I find it increasingly difficult to walk in a straight line (as in, straighter than normal). I find myself loosing my balance on my right foot (note that I hurt my right eye, related?) and I'm running into door frames and people daily. Can someone elaborate on this? Is it temporary? Thanks! ~Bonez

Hello everyone, this is my first time to post a topic over here, anyways, I'm a master student and I'm supposed to do Astrocyte primary culture from mouse cortex (mice p2-p5), I've tried it today for the first time and I ruined off the experiment, I guess all the cells that I got were dead already or they died from incubation in trypsin, I'm not actually sure. I do have several protocols for that but I wish if someone is using a specific protocol that is good and works to inform me about it and please from the very beginning as I still have problems with separating the cortices from the pups. Thank you.

I made a 3d model of an MRI for school, and this image is my result. The brain is cut in half, showing the different densities with the colors. Could someone explain to me what this image is teaching, or could teach, if it were labeled in some way? I am not very smart when it comes to anatomy, so this whole thing is a learning experience for me.
