Hi I have a distribution for which I would like to use median say M. The problem is that I do not know how to define some range based on M+3 [math]\sigma[/math]. Is there some kind of variance related to median ?

Hi friends I am trying to construct a new number set which dosn't have the problem of division by zero and the square root of negative value so here is the basic All arithmitic rules and notions are the same as those of Reals set except the following statements 0^2=1 if a and b are positive reals and a*b=c then a * -b = c "if a>b" a * -b = -c "if a<=b" -a * -b = -c if a=b^n then Root(a) =b "without absolute value" The rest is the same as the traditional R set so as a result we have this solultions for old problems : SquareRoot(-1)=-1 " since -1 * -1 = -1 " 1/0 = 0 0^0 = 0^(1-1) = 0^1 * 0^-1 = 0 * 0=0 So is …

I'm trying to numerically integrate the function [math]f(x) = |x| + |x|^3, x\in[-1,1][/math] using Simpsons rule and analyse the error. I've been trying to analyse the rate of convergence of the error but can't seem to get anywhere. Experimentally I've got that it's about [math]O(J^-2)[/math] (I think) but I can't show it mathematically. I tried using the approach of splitting up the function into subintervals, then using the formula [math]|E_2,J| = \frac{-1}{2880} (b-a)h^4 |f^{(4)} (x)|[/math] but this fails as [math]|f^{(4)}(x)|\equiv 0, \forall x\in \Re^+ [/math] Any hints?

Since computers use binary numbers, how is it possible for them to display decimals? For instance, the following (C code) will print out 10, and not a binary representation of 10. int i = 10; printf(i); How is that done?

Here is a new angle for statistics and probability. It is an area that combines probability with logic. Here is the scenario; we have 100 dice with six sides. If you throw these dice, there are certain odds for a particular combination. No big deal. Say we randomly threw these 100 dice into a container that was just large enough to hold all the dice, like a drinking water glass. The number of possible combinations now becomes amplified, beyond expected, because some of the dice can now balance on edges and or apex points because they can be physically supported by other random landing of dice. I understand that if you use the "has a polynomial time certificate" definition of NP, that the complement of the Hamiltonian path problem does not appear to be in NP - there is no certificate of polynomial size that a DTM could use to verify whether a given graph has no such paths. But, using the alternative definition of NP, which is those problems that can be solved in polynomial time by an NTM, doesn't it appear that coHAMPATH is in NP? My "proof" would go like this: 1. Does anyone know of any free software that is good at fitting curves to data? I have tried Mathematica, but it does not seem to do the job I need as the curve is highly non-polynomial. I should also add that such data analysis is outside my normal work and this is a favour for someone.

I'm doing a little project at the moment to do with how triangles relate to tetrahedrons and I have some interesting results which have allowed me to calculate what the 4D version would look like. I Made a simple model to test and it worked out right. The only problem now is that none of the shapes I've found have names as far as I know. Is there a name for a 4D shape made from 5 tetrahedrons? It also has 10 faces and 10 edges if that helps. Theres a 5D shape too consisting of 15 tetrahedrons (or 6 of the 4D shapes). Thanks if anyone knows.

I met a problem about finding the optimization of some function. I used the Trust-Region Newton and Quasi-Newton methods for the problem; however, with different initial guesses I sometimes got the local minimums. May I ask how to get out the trap of the local minimums please? I may try the Radom Walk method but it seems not be a good one. Any other ideas please reply! Thanks a lot!

I am not trying to undermine the practical usefulness of statistics, when used properly by a trained mathematician. But from the practical point of view of the lay person, a statistical approach can get irrational, since it can be used to manipulate a reasonable lay person. Let me give an example. Say eating X, doubles the risk of a person getting condition Y. The math expert has a good handle on this in terms of the hard numbers. It can tell the difference between going from 1 to 2 in a million and 100-1000 in a million. But the layperson is pitched "double the risk", for the 1 to 2 in a million.
