Do fish sleep?

Featured Replies

Fish breath by taking in water threw thier mouths and out thier gills. So if fish stop moving do the stop breathing. Or do they sleep in a current. And if fish did sleep in a current wouldn't that current push them along, canselling out thier movment. Or do they just not sleep?

They sleep, in fact studying zebra fish sleeping is helping neuroscientists find what sleeping is for.

That brings up a second question. How is it they dont suffocate? Do they keep moving while asleep?

In the case of dolphin, it is more difficult, they have to do aerial respiration during the sleep. Their brain is divided into two parts. When they sleep, one part of brain is sleeping and the other part of brain is awakened.

That brings up a second question. How is it they dont suffocate? Do they keep moving while asleep?

Do you suffocate when you sleep? Fish continue to breath just like we do when they sleep. Most fish can and do pump water through their gills even when swimming.

isn't there any clear answer available to the question.

After reading all the posts, I didn't even come to know that the fish sleep or not?

Please can anyone provide a clear answer/
