How You Got Interested in the Sciences

Featured Replies

I was just wondering how some of you got interested in the sciences. :D

To start out with, when I was about six years old my mom and I made little water molecules useing toothpicks and marshmallows. I thought that was so fun, I started to read my dads chemistry books. :D

I saw a periodic table and was hooked.

And somewhere I got interested in physics.

As a child, I had always been interested in the mechanisms of how things work. I would always string things together to examine classical mechanics, such as creating zip-lines for toys. And then I would do experiments from school library books, such as playing with matches and watching how a pool of water can get sucked up into a cup. And then there was my interest in electronics. I was always into robots, electronics, and physics. I grew up interested in the physical universe.

Eventually, however, I became self-aware and became interested in psychology and biology. On a philosophical ground, I decided that exploring the human mind is perhaps one of the best ways to better understand the physical universe. So, I study psychology, philosophy, biology, and neuroscience. However, I still study electronics and technology.

My Farther is an electronic engineer and I am sure his influence guided me towards sciences. My brother is also involved in science, biology in fact.

My Farther has been working at JET in Oxfordshire for some time now. I believe that this has had a large impact on me.

Carl Sagan's infectious enthusiasm in his series "Cosmos".

It's innate for me. My first word was "bat", and not the sort used in sports. I've been catching frogs and lizards since I was old enough to walk. Winding up in biology is pretty much my natural destination.
