walsh155
hello people if you add sodium hydroxide to sulfuric acid what salt would you have behind
Horza2002
NaOH + H2SO4 ==> NaHSO4 + H2O I also think hydroxide will be strong enough to remove the second proton to give: NaHSO4 + NaOH ==> Na2SO4 + H2O This reaction will also get very very hot quickly! insane_alien
umm, sulphuric acid is a stron acid, both of the hydrogens will remove themselves to form H+ ions. these will react with the OH- ions to form water and the Na+ and SO4 (2-) ions will be left in solution. the full rection is 2NaOH +H2SO4 --> 2H2O +Na2SO4
walsh155
but is this dangerous because it produces chlorine gas
SH3RL0CK
but is this dangerous because it produces chlorine gas It is dangerous for other reasons as Horza pointed out. Please do not attmept this.
insane_alien
there is no chlorine, chlorine cannot be produced.
Fuzzwood
As i recall, simple acid base reactions are not strong enough to induce atom fusion to heavier elements.
Horza2002
Its dangerous as the reaction can heat up enough to flash boil the water (as I've discovered in the past). So having boiling sulphuric acid flying around is not the safest thing in the world. No you cant get chlorince gas because theres no chlorine in there to start with
DrP
Would the reaction be more facile if diluted right down some or done in an ice bath or something? Or if the reagents were added slowly and drop wise from an addition funnel, burette or pipette?
insane_alien
yes, the reaction is perfectly safe as long as you aren't using crazy concentrations like 2M solutions and just dumping the reactants in by the bucketload. do it with 0.05M and add the reactants gradually and keeping it well stirred is perfectly safe.(as long as you wear eye protection to protect against splashes, gloves should be worn too)
walsh155
there is sodium hydroxide in bleach aint there but there is not enough to do a weakened experiment of this
Fuzzwood
You have any idea what a strong acid does to hypochlorite? Or do you think making toxic green clouds is somehow cool?
hermanntrude
walsh, you have been told time and time again by mods and resident experts not to go adding random things to bleach. Particularly important, as I mentioned before in the IRC room is not to add acid to bleach. DONT DO IT and STOP ASKING
walsh155
ok i may aswell listen to you as you are a chemistry expert i will not do this but i would like to know what gas is given off:embarass:
insane_alien
with sodium hydroxide and sulphuric acid, none at all.
walsh155
well why did fuzzwood say there is a cloud of green gas given of
Fuzzwood
Because bleach contains more ions than just a bit of NaOH. START GOOGLING!!!!
Cap'n Refsmmat
The trick is that there isn't just sodium hydroxide in bleach. There is sodium hypochlorite, and sodium hypochlorite can give off chlorine gas when mixed with the wrong things.
Fuzzwood
Like acids, in which this happens (although i doubt you care about reaction equations or safety at all) H+ + OCl- --> HOCl 5 HOCl -> 2 Cl2 + ClO3- + H+ + 2 H2O
walsh155
fuzzwood dont take it out on me just because im learning get a life

Fuzzwood
Im not taking it out on you, im trying to prevent anything bad happening to you. But since you dont care, why dont you throw every chemical you can find in the household cabinet together and watch the pretty stuff. If you really were learning, you would at least have googled for stuff here instead of being ignorant. EDIT: didnt see there was a 2nd page already
walsh155
but i looked on a bottle of bleach it sais that THIS CONTAINS SODIUM HYDROXIDE
Fuzzwood
Just take it from me its main ingredient is sodium hypochlorite. I had to run from it once...
hermanntrude
but i looked on a bottle of bleach it sais that THIS CONTAINS SODIUM HYDROXIDE tea contains tannic acid but it's not made entirely of it. some desserts say "may contain nuts" but you don't automatically decide that you have in front of you a pie made entirely out of nuts and nothing else. Sure bleach contains sodium hydroxide. it also contains sodium hypochlorite and a bunch of other things including some stupid colorants to make you think it's somehow cleaner because it leaves a stupid coloured stain on your toilet and some revolting-smelling chemicals which are supposed to make you think you're actually turning your toilet into a pine forest rather than chemically burning the shit out of it. a) don't believe everything you read b) everyone lies c) the presence of one thing does not preclude the presence of other things.
