The TV shows star treck and star wars that show those big space ships or SSTO make me laugh.

No propulsion system today allows SSTO like those scfi shows. May be in 20 years from now we may get a very very very small crude SSTO but will be nothing like the scfi shows.The big problem is propulsion and that is why we must use stages not a SSTO .There has been some work on very small crude SSTO but even than the propulsion does not allow it.

Why will the scfi shows not get it right?

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - An asteroid may come uncomfortably close to Earth in 2036 and the United Nations should assume responsibility for a space mission to deflect it, a group of astronauts, engineers and scientists said on Saturday.

 

Astronomers are monitoring an asteroid named Apophis, which has a 1 in 45,000 chance of striking Earth on April 13, 2036.

Although the odds of an impact by this particular asteroid are low, a recent congressional mandate for NASA to upgrade its tracking of near-Earth asteroids is expected to uncover hundreds, if not thousands of threatening space rocks in the near future, former astronaut Rusty Schweickart said.

 

"It's not just Apophis we're looking at. Every country is at risk. We need a set of general principles to deal with this issue," Schweickart, a member of the Apollo 9 crew that orbited the earth in March 1969, told an American Association for the Advancement of Science conference in San Francisco.

 

Schweickart plans to present an update next week to the U.N. Committee on Peaceful Uses of Outer Space on plans to develop a blueprint for a global response to an asteroid threat.

 

The Association of Space Explorers, a group of former astronauts and cosmonauts, intends to host a series of high-level workshops this year to flesh out the plan and will make a formal proposal to the U.N. in 2009, he said.

 

Schweickart wants to see the United Nations adopt procedures for assessing asteroid threats and deciding if and when to take action.

 

The favored approach to dealing with a potentially deadly space rock is to dispatch a spacecraft that would use gravity to alter the asteroid's course so it no longer threatens Earth, said astronaut Ed Lu, a veteran of the International Space Station.

 

The so-called Gravity Tractor could maintain a position near the threatening asteroid, exerting a gentle tug that, over time, would deflect the asteroid.

 

An asteroid the size of Apophis, which is about 460 feet

 

long, would take about 12 days of gravity-tugging, Lu added.

 

Mission costs are estimated at $300 million.

 

Launching an asteroid deflection mission early would reduce the amount of energy needed to alter its course and increase the chances of a successful outcome, Schweickart said.

 

NASA says the precise effect of a 460-foot (140-meter) object hitting the Earth would depend on what the asteroid was made of and the angle of impact.

 

Paul Slovic, president of Oregon-based Decision Research, which studies judgment, decision-making and risk analysis, said the asteroid could take out an entire city or region.

Well I must say the technology we have now there is not much we can do.The TV shows that shows how to destry a asteroid the technology we have will not do that.

From what people tell me the alternate energy has of now will not keep up with the demad .Now in the future the cost of the alternate energy may go way down and you may get more electricity out of it. People say wind power , tind power ,solar power , dams so on are more powerful now than before and cost less.

That say you have city population 500,000 you may need 5 solar power plants now not like before 12 solar power plants , If it was coal , gas or oil only one power plant.

This proves that alternate energy has of now cannot keep up with demad but may be in the future they may fix this problem.

Some people say cold fusion or fusion power will save the world one day.This is good stuff to look into.

Some way out scientist think you can get electricity from lightning or the ionosphere and claim that Nikola Tesla was working on tower to tap into this energy but got paid off.

Is it just me or has other people seen this too.Looking at alot of message boards and yahoo groups , yahoo answers there seems to be alot of lack of science.I mean there are some smart people :-)but than there is alot of people that lack science.

Even the news ,media and government lack science.And there seems to be a big lack of science how the human body works and medicine.

And there seems to be lack of facts given. I had one person say DNA is not in the cell but cell in the DNA.Other people saying to me I hate medicine that is not natural. And other saying cloning and stem cell is bad that is not what god wants and you playing god and is not natural.But have no problems with organ transplants , going to doctor ,taking drugs or having electronic implant. No problem with AI research ,electronics in humans , organ transplants so on.

I had one person that does not even know what red blood cells are , white blood cells are and platelets are.Than I hear people say if the moon is gone all life on earth is dead ,NASA is going crash moon or destry it today.

People these days seem to lack science and make up their own science like DNA is not in cell but cell in DNA with out saying I do not know the answer.

Why does everyone bash traditional medicine? Have they not look into the properties of trees ,herbs , spices ,flowers , microorganisms , incests ,shrubs so on and see if it good or bad? Where are the doctors in the rain forest ? There must be lots cures there.

I know in past alot of the drugs did not get inoproved. So a doctor or medicine man can say tale XY it wil help you !! And there was no research or study on it just the doctor or medicine man word. Many made people sick or did nothing .A man has cancer goes to medicine man say smoke pot or take heroin the symptoms are gone but the cancer still there. Do to lack of medical knowledge of the human body the word gets out and everyone think when you smoke pot or take heroin is cure for cancer .This was problem with traditional medicine. And other traditional medicine doing nothing or making person sick.

I'm not saying all traditional medicine is bad but many just do not look into it.

What I will like see is start from the beginning . Take all known living matter trees ,herbs , spices ,flowers , microorganisms , incests ,shrubs so on and all chemicals and do research or study on it . People tell me there is a slow down of drugs being made now and it is getting harder for new drugs or cures now.Say there was time the drug companies where making lots and lots of drugs and now it is harder and harder to come up with new drugs now.Is this true?

Are we coming up to brick wall with new drugs or what we can come out with?

wages are determined by supply and demand.It takes lot of schooling to become a professor ,lawyer , judges ,doctor , scientists and alot of people do not have what it takes to be one.If you want to be professor ,lawyer , judges ,doctor , scientists say than to your self eat ,sleep and study , learn and study and study and no time to go out with friends or party or you will not do well in school.

People from China or India know how hard life is ,how conpetive the world is , is there enough money to put food on the table or roof over their head , they come to the US for a better life and they are use to working hard and the government and parents teach discipline , give them high standards and promote higher learning.

You what to be a professor ,lawyer , judges ,doctor , scientists than from the time you get up to the time you go to bad read and read and just may be you get 80% of understanding what you raed.

It takes alot of work to be a scientist or doctor and most people do not want to spend 10 to 15 years in school to be one.No time go out with friends or watch TV.

Sure there are geeks who are very very smart and read some thing once and never have to go back and read it again or centric doctor or scientists that love it so much and so consumed in the work and anti- social that people call them geeks or nerds.

How many doctors is too many for Cuba? Who does India and China pump out more skilled work than? What do you consider skilled work?

I don't know why Cuba has more doctors more money the goverment puts into it, people working at walmart in the US get more pay than a doctor in Cuba by 3 times ,lack of enrolment mark in med school. You need 98% mark to be a doctor in the US and only 85% in Cuba ,lack of medical equipment in Cub like MRI's or CT' scan thant every hospital in the US has to have , old equipment , all the GDP in Cuba goes to doctors and nothing else.

I'm not sure but I do know Cuba is poor country and people get paid very little money skilled or not.They have alot of doctors but I do not know how well the doctors are train in Cuba or how outaded the hospitals are do they have MRI's or CT' scan so on.What is their health standards and do they have high med school standards so on.

Those third world countries may have alot of doctors but the pay is very very very bad and have outaded medical equipment ,low health standards ,and do not need high marks in med schools .

I'm sure this is a conplex quetions why healthcare cost so much and why there is a lack of doctors has there are many reason why .

The enormous debt of the USA should be compensated by working harder and consuming less foreign products. That way you can turn the import-export balance to provide an additional income to the country... Alternatively, you can also start producing goods that other people actually want to have (example: do Europeans want a small Japanese car, or a 20 meter long pickup truck from Detroit? Answer: small Japanese car).

You talking about trade debt that is because the US imports more than they export.The fed debt is the goverment spends money like the world coming to the end.

The US is changing from manufacturering industry to a service based economy the problem is commodity ,resources or service an other country wants is what makes wealth and makes that country rich.

I'll just point out that won't work - med schools limit enrollment because they don't have the time, staff, or materials for more students. Principle among these is cadavers - you want to be a doctor, you need to do Human Anatomy, and that means cutting up a cadaver and being tested on it. Bodies have to be donated *specifically* to the med school for this, and how many bodies you have determines how many students you can admit. Four students per body is about the limit - any more and it becomes a demo rather than an hands-on exercise.

There is shortage of professors ,teachers ,lawyers and judges. But I blame the goverment for this.

Why does healthcare cost so much? Like every year healthcare cost is so high .There is a shortage of doctors and the healthcare cost is so high .

A cost of a MRI or CT scan is extremely costly and governments are having a very hard time to give money to healthcare .

What is going on and why is it like that.Why is there a shortage of doctors.

Why was the 60's, 70's, 80's better than now with high cost and shortage of doctors.

I hear of long wait times in the ER why is that.Why is the cost so much higher than 30 or 40 years ago

I'm doing a project in school on the medicine we have now and medicine in the past or years ago in the past.The only things I can think of ar.

1.liver, heart, kidney ,face transplant we have now not possible 50 yaers ago.

2.Working on a person brain or heart .No doctor would do that 50 years ago .

3.Microscope invented in 1800's allow us today to understand the microorganism and what causes diseases and illnesses.

4.The Microscope and computers / math allowed inventions in drugs.

5.People with HIV are living longer than 20 years ago.

6.People who have cancer is no longer a death sentence.( only some cancers are easier to treat and well others are harder to treat .

7.New advances MRI ,CT scan, x-rays not possible 50 years ago.

8.Understanding of cell and DNA not possible 100 years ago.

9.Understanding of the brain not possible 50 years ago.

A1. There are cures for some cancers, fungi and parasites

A2 There are cures for Ebola, and Bubonic Plague

A3. There is cure for SARS

A4 There is cure for some bird flue strains

A5 Has for influenza some strains there is a cure.

All of this stuff is treatable, and most curable, depending upon what parasite, fungi, cancer, and strain of TB.

Gamma, x-ray and UV are classed as ionizing radiation. Ionizing radiation can cause cell damage by causing cancers and genetic damage as well as skin burns.

Can a rocket engines be inprove by doing the following things?

Can we get a rocket engines more powerful and fuel efficient by re-designing the combustion chamber ,inproving the thrust chamber ,amout of fuel burn or the layout of the thrust chamber where the oxydizer are mixed and burned?

And cutting back on moving parts and heat ?I just thought inproving the combustion chamber or new layout of the combustion chamber or a new state of the art combustion chamber .

It will be intresting to see what NASA is doing.
