  1. Why are the drunken mutterings (two mutterings?) of an aging hollywood star as important as a drunk driver.
  2. How much computing power can be combined before the (gigabit eithernet?) connections are the limiting factor, or is there some other limiting factor? More specifically, could I use an old PII computer to boost my newer Pentium 4 (newer, 1.8 GHz), and how much would it really do?
  3. Ubuntu is easy for most computers, but dual boot at first... Google video has a good flash video that outlines everything: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6104490811311898236&q=ubuntu
  4. It matters where you put the hard drive in the computer? I think the CDROM is the primary master in one of my computers... I thought the only problem came up when you hooked your CDROM and CD Burner on the same cable, making errors more common in burning. So it matters where you put the hard drive?
  5. They said I could take the computer to the place I bought it and get them to install the windows on it, they'll know how to do it. The place I bought it from says, because there was a misunderstanding (they told my mother we could put windows on any computer with it ), they'd do it for $25. I still have windows on one computer, I guess it's enough. Ubuntu is cooler anyway.
  6. It's a different computer than the one I originially bought windows before, so it has been on another computer for a year, and I wanted to move it to another computer. Windows had a problem with this. You have to "activate" windows within 30 days, by typing in you cd key. If they see that key already registered to another set of hardware... then you can't activate, and it will self-destruct in 30 days. This sucks because sometimes people just change some of their hardware (like new hard drive, etc.) and when they re-install windows again their key won't activate windows Ubuntu ships you cds for free...
  7. Doesn't happen to Mormons much anymore... never know who might be one
  8. Sorry, I re-installed windows, and when I tried to update GA found my copy of windows legitamite. So it updated fine and nothing went wrong, all I did was re-install. I don't know what was different about this time... but it's updating now. And the second part, I actually have another copy of windows that I bought with a computer. I've since put Linux on that computer. I wanted to put it on a seperate computer (not the one it came with), but it won't even let me activate windows with the key it came with. So I can update with your trick, but in 30 days windows stops working. A blessing in disguise
  9. Have you ever heard a drunk person talk...?
  10. INTP, same as YT. Interesting test.
  11. 5614, your going to hate me but when I re-installed it updated. But we have another windows that won't work on any other pc than mine (which has linux) and is useless... now I can put it on somehting and use it (if one can find a use for windows ).
  12. I reinstalled windows (as needs to be done at least once a year) on my gaming machine (or my Half Life 2 machine ) because PC games need windows, I think. Anyway it's saying that it isn't a genuene copy of windows and won't let me update. What can cause this and how can I fix it? I'm calling microsoft after I try one more re-install and try to update again (only thing I can think of ). If I can't get it to work, people have told me that Red Hat and Suse will play PC games, is it hard to do that? Can I use wine to play them in Ubuntu and have all the mods and stuff work?
  13. Does more than a gig of RAM really do anything?
  14. Hey BobbyJoeCool, I remember you I'm also having problems finding time to visit SFN.
  15. As 1veedo said, I believe microsoft would have to release the source code for a community to support win98. They've been doing some crazy stuff lately, why not just release the source code?
  16. Hey, I heard of a book called Nuth or Nooth, or something like that. It's suppose to be about programming, but I can't find it. I also heard of a book on Linux that you can read on the internet called "Root." No amount of googling, on my part, can find them Can anyone else?
  17. http://news.zdnet.com/2100-3513_22-6092653.html It seems that Windows 98 and ME support is ending. XP is about $200 (or $100 to upgrade) (http://www.microsoft.com/products/info/product.aspx?view=22&pcid=a9d2c448-eb05-4a2b-a062-9c711c533e0c&type=ovr). I think linux will get a boost. It won't be too hard for some to switch to ubuntu, right?
  18. A lot of my personality/values are constructed from the show Seinfield I know what you mean about the simpsons.
  19. You haven't lived until you've seen the Colbert Report.
  20. I'm having fun with python and html now. I'll see what I can do with these, and I'll move on to others later. Thanks Dak!
  21. If I have any background in science at all it's in elementary biology and science fiction If it wasn't for the Ubuntu community my linux project would have utterly failed, I'm not sure how it all works, From what I've read visual BASIC is a program for editing a programming language based on BASIC, called visual BASIC? And this is different from the BASIC on my calculater. Also can I write something in a text file and save it as a program somehow...? I've been studying history for the last year, I'm afraid I am lacking in computer expertise . I'll certainly be reading more, I just don't know what to look for yet, thanks.
