  1. AgentChange, thats true, certain sects might lean more towards Jewish Law in that sense, while others might be more... open.

and Dr. DNA. I have to say, that although I understand why you and many others may feel that "Jews" are an ethnicity, you must realize that there are Jews born all over the world!

You could say that they all started out in the same area: Middle East/Mediterranean, but there have been hundreds, if not thousands of years of splitting apart and migration.

So personally, I think that calling "jews" an ethnicity is silly. However, there are plenty of people out there who think otherwise.

But I would like to add, the people on this site are very open. and that makes it easy.

Ive had this conversation with some other people in my dorm hall last year... and well, most people are quite close-minded. So thank you Dr.DNA, for actually looking up the info :D

*ahem* back to the topic :)

  2. Ah, you've destroyed my psychological health by correcting me! :P

Anyways, I didnt know about all those studies. However, that is not to say that girls cannot play with cars - because as I said, they would play with them in a different fashion (well, I said "they may pretend in a different manner"). Instead of racing and crashing, they would be taking mommy to work or something.

As far as the tribes people are concerned... where was the story published?

Its not that I dont trust you, but I would like to possibly read it, or at least know where it was published. :)

  3. I thought that to be Jewish, your mother just has to be Jewish. :)

    wow, ok.

I dont like when people say this (my parents were Jewish, however, Ive gone the ways of secularism - atheist)

(I Know this doesnt answer the OP question)

I would just like to say, that view is a Jewish view.

In other words, ask someone who is Jewish and they will tell you this is true. Ask someone else, and they might say its true, but only because they've heard it from someone who was Jewish.

    Judaism is not genetic!!!

Just because you mother is Jewish does not automatically make you Jewish!

If you are not taught it, then you do not follow it, and thus, are not Jewish.

Furthermore, one may decide to convert to Judaism.

  4. you should try to put NH4NO3

    um, yeah.

    Why would I use that?

So in answer to the OP questions: yes, it does work, and yes, there is a point at which it stops working, but you are only going to see that very rarely unless you live in some godforsaken northland.

    thanks :)

I wonder if the size of the salt will matter?

using a finer salt, or large crystals?

  5. ah gotcha.

but would it work in practice?

For example, I talked to my friend who works Grounds here at the university.

and they use shovel-like tools to get ride of the ice, but they also have a propane torch (more like a flamethrower, lol).

And he said that he's melted the ice, only to have it freeze a few minutes later.

So I suggested he add salt to the water. But will it really work if its say 15º out? (that is to say, can the salt reduce the freezing temperature by 15º+?)

    thanks :)

  6. Dr. Evil, while I can sort of agree with what you said, when you say "boys play with cars and girls play with dolls"

realize that almost always has to do with how the child is brought up.

If the parents want their boy to be "masculine" then they'll give him GI Joes, Cars, and things like that. Same with girls.

However, you can give a girl a car to play with at a young age, and they most likely will.

They may pretend in a different manner, but by no means when we are children we say "Well mother, I am a boy, therefore I believe you should give me this car to play with" - its all gender roles.

  7. Thanks for all the replies!

So, it seems the general consensus is that no, other animals cannot commit suicide - except for perhaps whales beaching themselves, which, however, could be for a variety of reasons.

and someone else mentioned ants... but what they mentioned was more like it was commanded by other ants... hmm.

and yes, I dont think Bees count, its not like the bee said "gee, Im glad my stinger will rip off part of my body when I sting something" lol

  8. Because forums appeal mostly to a male audience for whatever reason. There are very few websites where women dominate, even in other totally random non-intellectual subjects.

    yup!

Ive been on, and am on multiple forums.

Including my hobbies. interests. and gaming.

I can say, that out of all of them, there have been TWO forums that had more women then men were:

    1) 'The Sims' forum

    2) Jewelery and Gemstones forum

other than that they've all had many more men than women.

and remember, this is 2 out of about 9 (including those I no longer visit)

  9. Everyone would like to have a better memory. Maybe you should take a healthy few minute break and then try to study some more.?

That said, the drugs you are taking appear to have a long list of potential side effects. Including but not limited to memory.

    For example,

    http://www.webmd.com/drugs/drug-9846-Risperdal+Oral.aspx?drugid=9846&drugname=Risperdal+Oral&pagenumber=6

    http://www.webmd.com/drugs/drug-11188-Trazodone.aspx?drugid=11188&drugname=Trazodone&pagenumber=6

    http://www.webmd.com/drugs/drug-6222-Prolixin.aspx?drugid=6222&drugname=Prolixin&pagenumber=6

Of course, the benefits of these medication(s) may far outweigh any potential side effects.

You certainly should discuss the memory issue and any other risks vs benefits of your medication with your doctor.

    I agree.

and it looks like the Risperdal is the suspect.

  10. Currently Im enrolled in college here in AZ.

I also went to a private high school.

however, I will say that my math skills would not have been adequate had I chosen a math-intensive field.

7-8th grade is what really ruined math (the way it was taught, and how the class was conducted) - then in HS I continued to move up the chain, even though I should not have.

    Science however, yes :)

luckily though, my major is/are Psychology and Sociology. So I really only needed statistics (which Im good at).

  11. Keep in mind that this backs up many psychologists conclusions that religion is in-built in the human brain!

    I disagree 100%.

I dont think Religion is "built in" - however, I do think that it is inevitable at the early stages of evolution because humans cannot comprehend everything, and thus supernatural powers/beings and magic comes into play.

For example, if lightning strikes someone, people way back when werent going to say "well this is just a natrual phenomenon and he was unlucky to get hit"

no, they would say "he was a bad person and deserved it" or "God (or other being) was angry with him"

by no means is religion "built in" to the human brain. Its a learned phenomenon.

  12. They form hypotheses and test them. They use the same statistical methods as any other field. They try to model the universe and test those models, then refine them and continue learning more. It's a science like any other.

In it's early years, psych was much more speculative and philosophical, but so was alchemy (ahem... I mean chemistry). The "softness" or "socialness" of them and any values assigned those labels are completely arbitrary. They have no relevance on the "goodness" or "badness" of the field.

    Heh, yes I know.

I was saying its a Social Science because it is, and at times it may not be as easy to measure things, as opposed to physics or chemistry.

  13. Too bad these kids had never heard of salvia before trying this jenkem shit. I actually fell sorry for not just the kids but the parents lol.

yeah. Salvia will achieve the same results, a short hallucinogenic experience - roughly 20-30 minutes - but this is probably cheaper.

edit: according to Wikipedia, its not as mainstream as some might believe it to be (based on the original article)

  14. I don't know about your school, but my degrees just have the school names and "Bachelor of Arts" and "Doctor of Philosophy". They state nothing about what the degrees are actually in or even the departments.

    thats odd....

My stats professor has her degrees on the wall, and they all say "Bachelor of Arts Psychology" "Masters of Arts Psychology" and I dont know what her doctorate says, but I know it has the field.
