  1. ah, the nice thing about Psych: experiments don't take very long (perhaps a few months at most) - unless you're doing a longitudinal study... then, well, that'll take a few years, but you certainly wouldn't do that for you thesis.

  2. Any helpful ways to study for this? Things to review?

I'll also probably take the Psychology Subject Test, since my professor said she did better on it than the regular GRE and that can [potentially] help with Grad Schools.

For the subject test, in Psych anyway, I've heard it's best to study a Psych 101 book (I saved mine :) ).

But for the regular GRE, what should I start studying? Especially in regards to Math.

    Thanks

  3. I think this would be the right place for this...

Anyhoo, long time no see Science Forum :)

I have a quick and simple question.

When I was a kid, I had this laser gun keychain that took small button cells as its power source. In fact, it had 3 of them stacked on one another.

I was wondering if say, each was 1v, does stacking them increase the output to 3v? Or does it just increase the lifespan of the powered object?

    Thanks :)

  4. How would an alloy of Lithium, Sodium, Potassium, Rubidium & Caesium react with water?

    lol!

    actually, I don't get it

    *not a chem geek (unfortunately)*

I imagine that it has to do with a large bang.

  5. Holy moly I haven't been here in... a few months I think!

I've had a number of computer problems recently (motherboard died, had to reformat, etc).

Anyhoo, I'm here now! (not like any of you are that excited).

Um, so yeah. I look forward to being part of the community again.

edit: yup, last post was in September. x_x

  6. While I cannot speak to the issue of the chemistry differences, I can tell you with a high degree of confidence that you very likely used pennies minted after '82 since banks take old money out of circulation every so often.

I'm going to have to disagree, on the bank part.

Banks dont often take old pennies (cents) out of circulation. They will take older, silver coins out of circulation however, as well as old notes (paper money).

Chances are, that out of all the pennies she used/had, probably 90% or more were Zinc (just my personal estimate). Just take a look at your piggy bank, and see what you have. You'll probably have cents from the 70's in there (depending how many total cents you have).

  7. Question with this (maybe it doesnt matter though) but the pennies you used, when were they minted?

I ask because in 1982 they changed the composition from 95% copper and 5% Tin and Zinc, to 99.2% zinc, and .8% copper.*

I believe this would effect your outcome slightly, depending if the pennies you were using were either 95% copper or 99% zinc with copper plating.

*in 1982 both types are present, anything 1981 and prior will be 95% copper, while anything 1983 or later will be 99% zinc. However, you can tell the difference between the two by weight. copper cents will be 3.11 grams, while zinc ones will be 2.5 grams.

  8. I would agree that females possibly have more anxiety - especially if their sexually active, considering their religion may go against what they are thinking/want to do.

And then there's the guilt if they do do something - could be very stressful.

and Ecoli, I know what you mean about Heb. School, I had to go every Wednesday and Sunday... then I went to a religious HS... oye.

  9. She is excellent at art, but has a sort of fixation with fictional character she has created. She will often refer to them in conversation as if they were real people and talks about them obsessively.

You can see why I get lousey mathematic grades... this is what I spend my time thinking about at school.

Hmm, I think we could do better with more specifics... how she uses it, and manages to put it into conversation.

Dont worry, in Psychology you dont really need geometry :D

  10. I`v tested this out and it takes perfect pictures even in pitch black, you could in effect walk right up to someone in the dark, take their picture and they wouldn`t even notice! >:D

    haha, awesome!

Green laser huh? This intrigues me. :eyebrow:

Looking forward to some pics :)

  11. I was going to say "because it's easy and it works", then I saw that dichotomy had beaten me to the punch so I didn't. Except that I did.

I said it before Dichotomy did... but thats ok. :eyebrow:

(maybe not as succinctly though :P)

I think part of this labelling happens more when the person is losing an argument. What do you think? Is that a fair assessment?

I dont know about more often, but Im sure people who are winning one would use them as well (maybe that's why they're winning in the first place?)

  12. Well, maybe party because of the Sociological Theory of Labeling Theory?

As it essentially works... at least I think it does.

Although in the case of labeling theory its saying [basically] that if someone does a crime, and you label them a criminal, they will always be seen as one - and they'll usually always be seen as a bad guy.

    Similar to a sex offender.

You could make sexual joke in a work place, and if someone doesnt like it, they can take you to court. And lets say they win, you'll be labeled as a sex offender, even though what you did (in your eyes, and perhaps the eyes of many others) was fairly harmless. but because you have that label, people see you very differently.

So really, labels hold a lot of power. There's a big difference between saying (for example, Im going to use you iNow - I hope you dont mind :) ) "iNow is an environmentalist" and "iNow is a hippie tree-hugging liberal" - one is respectable, while the other is demeaning. Giving you a label can change how people perceive you, even though you've done nothing different.

The answer as to why we do it? I think its because it really does work - as long as enough people latch on to it and believe it.

If you hear someone is something (a right-wing nutcase for example), and you have no proof of it, its like a first impression, you're almost bound to believe it until proven otherwise.
