  1. LoL. And generally you don't get your own special gourmet chef in prison. Though one does hear of powerful mobsters back in the day who managed to accrue a lot of perks while imprisoned. Any convictions will come well after the convention, given the pace of such proceedings, so a jailbird Trump scenario would have no effect on primaries. If the polls @iNow cites are accurate as to likely voters in the general election, then it will be a second Biden term thanks to Independents and suburban gop moderates who are being repelled by TFG. Also a possibility that TFG, if convicted, would be sentenced to house arrest in light of his age and the security issues that prisons present. Not difficult to imagine comedy sketches featuring a White House with Trump strolling around in an electronic ankle bracelet.
  2. I think there are now community shelters for battered embryos there. No one wants to see someone become a scape-zygote.
  3. Well, some of the charges TFG faces could be deemed “high crimes and misdemeanors” within the meaning of Article II, Section 4 of the Constitution, thus warranting impeachment by the House and removal by the Senate. Second, if Trump is actually in prison on Inauguration Day, that fact could render him “unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office” within the meaning of the Twenty-fifth Amendment. While I can see that a slender Democrat majority might have trouble executing a section 4 removal, the practical obstacle to the duties of POTUS by incarceration might be enough to incline some GOP congresspeople to vote against TFG on impeachment. It might depend on who the Veep is. And if Jack Smith's insurrection case secured a conviction, that would allow execution of section 3 of the 14th A, and TFG would be rendered ineligible to take the oath of office again. (had Debs won in 1920, that would likely have been the means of barring him from actually taking office)
  4. A wood frame house can be protected from fire (proper shingles or sheet metal roof, clearing vegetation near structure, mineral wool insulation, fire-rated sheathing etc.), but it's impossible to stop a strong temblor from cracking or even tearing apart masonry. Give me popsicle sticks any day. That's really a good idea to have those air chambers, which reduces the vibration as flow shuts off - "water hammer" would tend to tear those screws out of the concrete, otherwise. Bwahaha!
  5. Surface mounting on concrete or stone is best avoided. Use an impact drill and masonry screws to attach a couple furring strips, then run your water lines up those. If the anchoring degrades you will still have the top of the strips secured to the top plate (assuming this is a basement). And attaching water pipes like PEX snugly to the wood strips protects them better from pets and small children. I.e. never have a pipe where it can be easily yanked on, as in the photo shown.
  6. DK. Which is why I hedged by saying saner voices. If some officials are capable of grasping the science that supports that a frozen blastocyst is not sentient, then there is some hope that idiot rulings like the Bama SCt's will not gain legal traction. Maybe. I really couldn't say how far a state would go with these kinds of wedges, in order to wage a culture war.
  7. Some saner voices are pushing back on this ruling. (from CNN) Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall weighed in on the issue on Friday. Marshall said he “has no intention of using the recent Alabama Supreme Court decision as a basis for prosecuting IVF families or providers,” in a statement from Chief Counsel Katherine Robertson. (....) The American Cancer Society and its advocacy affiliate, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, said in a statement Friday they are deeply concerned about the Alabama Supreme Court ruling’s effect on cancer patients, survivors and their families. “Some cancer treatments can cause infertility, and cancer patients and survivors often rely on IVF to build families after treatment,” Karen E. Knudsen, CEO of both groups, said in the statement. https://www.cnn.com/2024/02/23/us/alabama-ivf-embryos-supreme-court-ruling-legislation/index.html
  8. A classic take on the reductio ad absurdum.
  9. Seems like there's a tendency to view his incoherence as more a style, "he was riffing," or as playful humor. I think this underscores that everyone, Republicans included, hold Biden to a much higher standard - it's interesting how many Republicans are unaware that they do this (and that they therefore are tacitly acknowledging Biden functions cognitively at a much higher level). Trump gets up and manages to deliver a few slogans and snipes, and doesn't wet his pants - that's all the GOP expects from a puppet whose strings are operated by the Steves (Miller and Bannon) and other Far Right advisors. I would guess a lot of Republicans know this and cynically accept this is the way that Zeon can be conquered (to use a Star Trek analogy - the episode with the Starfleet historian who is heavily drugged and used as a figurehead).
  10. With apologies to Lynyrd Skynyrd... Sweet theocracy, Alabama. Where the judges all sniff glue Sweet theocracy, Alabama Lord I wiped the Constitution with my poo.
  11. Yes, good point... in terms of gene transcription, mammals seek to equalize the gene expression between the sexes by silencing one X chromosome. An excess of gene product from two active Xs would not be good. If both X chromosomes are active, as in the case of a pathological reactivation of Barr bodies, that can be a sign of breast cancer. I guess one could say males have slightly more gene product, due to active code pertaining to gonadal development on the Y, while females have a bit more total code, but only more gene product when there is pathology, like cancer. The equalization of gene expression is called dosage compensation and is an area of genetics that gets fairly complicated. We just scratched the surface in my biology courses.
  12. What's kind of funny is that several deep red states are noted for being early in advancing women in politics. Nebraska elected the first GOP woman governor, and Texas and Wyoming also elected women early on. Wyoming was also the first state in the Union to give women the vote. But of course today's GOP is in many respects a party of regression, far removed from its historical roots. I noticed btw that the Alabama supreme court justice who recently delivered the theocratic decision on frozen embryos being people and how we must fear the wrath of God if an embryo is dropped on the lab floor....has to retire at the end of his present term because Alabama sets mandatory retirement of justices at age 70. Hmm.
  13. Yes, you share mitochondrial DNA with all those in the maternal lineage, since mitochondria in the egg are preserved but sperm mitochondria are destroyed during fertilization. That mitochondrial DNA tips the balance towards the mother in terms of total DNA. If you are male, you also got a little more nuclear DNA from mom anyway, since the Y chromosome is much shorter than the X. (which is why a recessive gene on the X chromosome, like one for color blindness, will be more likely to be expressed in male children - the Y chromosome lacks most of the genes that are on the X.
  14. As a monkey, I do not appreciate this slur against my elimination products. It's both speciesist and fecalist. I am quite proud of my trophic cascade.
  15. Either the Illuminati like referring to themselves in third person or you posted someone else's email address. With the name Williams mispelled. Also, if you are an occult and secret cabal, it's surprising you would post an address publicly. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illuminati In subsequent use, "Illuminati" has been used when referring to various organisations which are alleged to be a continuation of the original Bavarian Illuminati (though these links have not been substantiated). These organisations have often been accused of conspiring to control world affairs, by masterminding events and planting agents in governments and corporations, in order to gain political power, influence and to establish a New World Order. Central to some of the more widely known and elaborate conspiracy theories, the Illuminati are depicted as lurking in the shadows and pulling the strings and levers of power. This view of the Illuminati has found its way into popular culture, appearing in dozens of novels, films, television shows, comics, video games and music videos. Do you have tote bags?
  16. While verbal skills (parrots can recognize word meanings, and don't just mimick language) can show cognitive sophistication, corvids and parrots also display other cognitive skills. I am not talking about popular impressions of them, which may not be relevant to determining the best candidate species for trying to simulate on a neural net. Social animals like parrots are a good choice, because a parrot-based neural net would be more predisposed to interact with us in a learning environment and responsive to positive social reinforcements and rewards. But yes, other avians could have traits, like task persistence, that also are conducive to good heuristics.
  17. The CEO of IKEA is now the Prime Minister of Sweden. He is currently assembling his cabinet.
  18. Forum rules here require that you address relevant questions directed towards assertions made in the OP.
  19. Looks like river rock, but you said it rattles which points towards some type of fossilized egg. Or could be a geode - sometimes the interior crystals will get knocked loose and rattle. Would help to know the location found, if you are okay with giving geographic information.
  20. That would certainly make more sense of what's otherwise an odd crossed wire. That would be great, if moderate voters could see two California pols as not too much of a stretch. That's why I was thinking Kelly or Whitmer.
  21. Wisconsin guv just signed a new redistricting bill, which removes most of the Republican gerrymanders. That might help with some of the House races (but I don't know how much effect the new maps have on US congressional districts v. statehouse districts). The House races are going to be critical this year, in terms of providing some reigning in of a demented and vengeful TFG (if he wins). NY and CA are also looking at potential seat flips. Though I've defended Biden in several threads here, his confusion of leaders of Egypt and Mexico the other day (a verbal gaffe I'm pretty sure, rather than a deeper confusion) seems to reflect a continuing decline that is worrisome. I've been hearing some compelling arguments from Dem pundits that Biden should bow out before the Convention and pass the torch to one of the younger stars currently sitting on the bench. Mark Kelly, Gretchen Whitmer, Gavin Newsom, are some of the alternatives who look pretty strong and would definitely get me more excited about 2024. I think them continuing to boost Biden is okay, boosting solidarity and showing gratitude to Biden for the amazing job he's done in a very trying term, and they can keep doing that until the Convention draws nigh. But then, maybe Joe needs to do some candid self-reflection (if he hasn't already) and work with his team to figure out who might best carry on his work. As usual, Trump's ongoing and nonstop incoherence (Pennsylvania is going to change its name, Putin should feel free to attack our NATO allies if they can't keep up their membership payments, etc.) gets a pass from his adoring zombies.
  22. I think the software is cra-shin. But I doff my cap to your wordplay.
  23. There is no lumeniferous aether. Light can't have infinite velocity without matter containing infinite energy (also goodbye magnets). It just doesn’t make sense to talk about something moving faster than c. C just is - because it is specific in its relation to other things. Basic causality has a finite speed limit, which has nothing to do with some sort of aether.
