Hello. Where can I get data on polymorphs of a certain chemical? For instance any give medical chemical. There most likely are databases that contain such info, and maybe even structures, like there is the Protein Data Bank with structures of proteins. I'd appreaciate it if some one could give a hint to where such info can be accessed and how. Cheers.

i am attempting to build a photonic ionic cloth radio amplifier maser, (PICRAM) U.S PATENT 5,247,933. Please could you help me to not only build a isotonic aqueous solution, containing a borate buffer system and sodium chloride, preserved via 0.1 % sorbic acid and disodium (EDTA), (via simple description) but also tell me the best place to buy the ingredients. an alternative is to use four table spoons of sea salt per 1/2 pint of water utilising the same borate buffer as above. nice one....... hassle free.

Hello. I'm new here, and unfortunately very inexperienced at chemistry at this point in my life. So, please don't laugh at me if I say something stupid. This is an unusual question, but hopefully it can be accepted here anyway. At first it sounds completely out of place, but it does concern chemistry in the end, so just bear with me as I progress. Or skip ahead to the emboldened text (my question) if you get bored with my obligatory intro. I'm writing a moderately fantasy-based series of short stories in which I have decided to introduce chemistry (a science for which I have recently discovered a great personal fascination). In the story, a certain r…

I have a lecture bottle of CO2, and a kit for making dry ice from a cylinder. However... the kit specifies that you must use a cylinder which has an internal siphon, which is designed so that you draw from the liquid portion at the bottom of the cylinder. What i'm wondering, though, is whether it'd be safe to simply use my lecture bottle, but upside-down. what do you guys think?

Would a Farnsworth/Hirsch Fusor be a good enough neutron source to use for synthesis of Au-197 from Hg-196? Can anyone recommend an alternate, safe source? Jazz

I was thinking. There are lots of artificial elements in the periodic table, most of them are extremely heavy and they're usually elements which have a half life of some minutes, seconds, or less like Ununoctium. Is it right to put them in the periodic table? I don't think it's useful. What do you think?

I am trying to make biodiesel from animal fat. The basis prosess involves the following. Collecting the fat from the abbetoir. Heating to remove the water and solids. Treating with 1% sulfuric acid to reduse the FFA 's Reacting it with sodium metoxside. Normal washing and drying. The acid stage reaction is wery slow at 70 'C . Did anybody try the reaction at higher temp and pressure. I see you can use a tipe of risin to speed up the reaction. Do anybody have any experience with it. Can somebody tell me anything about the economics of the process.

Take a look at this thread: http://www.scienceforums.net/forum/showthread.php?p=435357#post435357 In particular, take a look at the video link in the OP of a magician. At 11:50, Keith Barry stages a trick using a volunteer from the audience, a shard of glass and a coke bottle (if you don't want to watch his other cool illusions, you can just forward to 11:50 on the video). The trick climaxes at 14:00 with the shattering of the base of the bottle using only the shard of glass and the negative emotions of the volunteer, supposedly. I think it's done with chemicals, one he slips into the bottle and the other present on the shard. At 14:00, you can see liquid when…

I would like to run this one by everyone here. I like using baking soda as a cleaner; it really works pretty darn well as an abrasive for scrubbing. The other day, I bought some new baking soda becaue we were running low and it was on sale. I noticed that on the new packages of Arm & Hammer they are recommending that you throw it out after 30 days...there is the calendar listed and that is all. On the old package of Arm and Hammer it says on the side of the package to throw it out after 3 months, if in the refrigerator. I personally think what it says on the new package is load of merde and simply marketing's way of trying to convince you that you need to buy mor…

I have a big problem when taking Lab classes: headache. In the lab, I have to use protector glasses. It is one hypothesis that could give a reason for my horrible headache. The other hypothesis is that this headache may be a consequence of the manipulation of toxic compounds. I am saying this because it really affects me. I've read the lab class script, and there was wrote "100 mL of the NaOCl solution", I understood "100 mL of HCl"... It disturbs me VERY much. And the pain is horrible. Is it normal to have headache because of lab classes?

Hi. I use canned chemicals to 'freeze' electronics as one tool for troubleshooting; and would like to know if there is any canned product that works by heating instead of using a heat gun. Has to be electrically non-conductive, capable of reaching about 80 Celsius.

Do any of you know a way in which I could succesfully extract sodium from salt? Obviously displacments out of the question as I cannot get my hands on any highly reactive metals but would electrolysis be succesful. If yes what solvent would be needed as I guess water could not be used due to the formation of NaOH? Realsitically is this possible with my limited apparatus or completely out of the question?

Trying to find how to put together one deflated 'party' balloon with a few grams of water in it and a chamber or packet with some compound also inside, that due to mechanical jerk they mix and produce a gas, perhaps CO2, so in less than a minute would inflate to something like 5 to 10 litres. What household or simple compounds could achieve this ? Would baking soda or baking powder or a more energetic something work ? Ideas ?

Ill skip right to it Basically im planning on setting up a electrolysis cell to make potassium chlorate, potassium perchlorate and ammonium perchlorate mainly for personal use and maybe some to sell to other local enthusiasts (There is absolutely no one in Australia that sells KCLO3, KCLO4 and NA4CLO4, if you want it you have to find someone to ship it to you internationally) The whole process seems straightforward but the only problems im having is with making and or sourcing a suitable anode. At first i wanted to make a graphite substitute lead dioxide anode (and still do) but for that i need nitric acid which im sure many of you would know is not as easy to g…

i am thinking off building one off those sugar/KNO3/sulfur rocket engines BUT i want the case to be desposible and the rocket too... so what i was thinking for a cheap solution was MAYBE... i could use duct tape (tightly rapped together), I know this is probaly the stupidest thing i ever said but, would it work? (doughts) if not do you guys have any suggestions...

We have a nasty Canada Goose problem and I understand that a Methyl Anthranilate mix works well in keeping them off the lawn (makes the grass taste bad). The drawback is that the cost of commercially available product is extremely costly. Is there any way to make a home-brew?? Thanks, Steve in Greensboro,NC

The human race is on the verge of giant leaps, in regard to human understanding! Once the Quantum Universe is better understood, then this will shed 'new' light upon nuclear positionings, molecular bonding, and general chemistry. What was once thought as impossible, may truly become absolute! The true knowledge of the manipulation of Light, Gravity, Mass, Plasmatic Luminosity . . . etc., will lead to mega-advancements concerning 'structural design', and actually in all the applied fields of science and technology! The only known hope for this possibility, is located within the CERN LHC programs. This enlightenment will not come without extreme risks!

How much heat is released from the reaction of aluminum chloride and water? Yes, I've tried google. No, I don't have a calcinator. Now I could get really clever with some thermometers and styrofoam, but that wouldn't be very accurate, and would be a bit difficult to keep the reaction in an enclosed space with the large quantities of gas released, and I was rather hoping someone here might be able to help. Thanks

Hi, I've recently started to accumulate different chemicals (trying to make a small lab at home) and I was wondering if anyone could tell me some interesting reactions I could do with the stuff I got. Here is what I have so far.. NaOH KMnO4 KNO3 KOH NaHSO4 C S Fe2O3 Al Powder Glycerol and SrCO3 I'm also getting some MnO2 and Cr2O3. I've made some thermite and a little black powder but thats all so far. I was wondering If I could make some different chemicals from what I have that would be useful.
