ok so i was making up a batch of AgNO3 or silver nitrate. well i was being very careful not to touch it, i wore gloves the entire time. so i was moving the container that had the AgNO3 (aq) and didnt have any gloves one since i had not planned on touching the silver nitrate because i was just moving ht container to a new location. when i put the juar in a bowl of hot water it broke and sure enough my hands have been stained with the silver nitrate, and i really need to get it off. i wait tables and cook at a restaurant....and my hands look filthy THINGS I ALREADY KNOW -the stain is permanent and only goes away when the old stained skin dies and the new f…

Ok well just yesterday I began trying to make some rust for another experiment i will be doing (thermite hehe). So basically my setup is this, ive got a 12v adapter with the ends stripped plugged into the wall, and the negative wire has a huge bolt so it wont "erode" quickly and the positive side which is the one that bubbles the most i think has an iron nail on it, if i was backwards, you get the idea. So i turn it on and my first batch was fine but it made black and orange stuff, not all orange and when i heated it it turned all orange. Now im on my next batch and blue stuff keeps forming on the bolt then sinks to the bottom no matter what i try and orange stuff accumla…

I was simply wondering what the difference (in performance, primarily) is between potassium chlorate and potassium perchlorate. Thanks

I have read that Potassium perchlorate has very little solubility in water, but is there a solvent that will efficiently dissolve KClO4 ? More importantly, are there incompatibilities with solvents such as acetone, ethanol, methanol or isopropanol? Will any of these dissolve KCLO4 more efficiently than water? Robert

I am an amature at pyrotechnics and I would love it if people with alot of experience with pyrotechnics could tell me ways to make good (high grade) smoke bombs that are semi-safe to breath (breathing in smoke isin't good for you no matter what id assume) like for paint-ball, and also ones to display like a factory smoke stack . I am willing to follow all safety procautions and will listen to the experts advice. thank you Spencer

Hi, I recently acquired some metallic lithium stored in mineral oil. I was wondering about two things concerning this reactive metal... 1) Before using the metal to prepare a Lithium salt, I do need to remove the mineral oil on its surface (as not to contaminate my preparation). Is there a solvent I can use? Even just in air, it turns nearly black in a matter of seconds. 2) Just dropping the metal in water will result in creating Lithium Hydroxide, but how do I go about creating either Lithium Nitrate or chloride? I thought of just dropping very very small quantities at a time directly into Nitric acid or Hydrochloric acid, but i'm too scared about the intens…

I ran an experiment this morning with my 9th grade students, to demonstrate the properties of oxygen. Of course first I had to show them how to make oxygen so I decided to use two methods: 1. H2O2 + MnO2. This worked OK and I quickly generated a litre of oxygen and filled a large Ehrlenmeyer flask. I did the glowing splint and magnesium ribbon demos. Then I wanted to dem sodium metal in oxygen. I had used an awful lot of 3% hydrogen peroxide to generate the first litre and recalled that decomposition of KNO3 to KNO2 produces oxygen so I set up a distillation flask and began blasting it with a bunsen burner. No go! Even with the burner flame playing directly on the g…

I have looked around the threads here, and have seen plenty on how to make KNO3 from various other compounds, but I was hoping to find something that will help me do the reverse. I know that you can buy some potassium compounds cheaply, but I just want to try to make one for the hell of making it. I know that generally speaking, pretty much all potassium and nitrate compounds are soluble, so making another compound won't be easy, but I was hoping that someone could help me. I know that one of the products of combustion of KNO3 and glucose is KOH, though that is lost as smoke, and I would think would be difficult to capture. Any help on this topic would be much appreciated

Hey All, Great forum you all got going on here. I just joined recently and already have a question that the chem buffs here might be able to answer. I just finished reading about the Molecular bond Theory...you know, Bonding MOs and Antibonding MOs etc. Could someone explain how to write the molecular structure based on Bonding and Antibonding MOs? Also, when the txtbk says that the Schordinger wave functions of two atoms overlap in phase or out of phase, is that permanent overlap? If so, how does that occur. Thanks, guys. -Nerddoc

i work in an industry where electroplating is a major opeartion...my question is regarding Nickel Plating bath... the main constituents of Nickel bath are: Nickel Sulphate Boric Acid Nickel chloride... But in my industry we are using ammonium chloride insted of Nickel chloride... but i want to do is replace amm. chloride with nickel chloride but i dnt wanna change whole bath...so my question is: can i directly add Nickel chloride in the existing bath????? does any reaction will occur b/w amm. chloride & Nickel Chloride???? If yes, then wat kinda rxn would it be, and how can i prevent it???? plz reply ASAP...[/B]

For p1d1: p -> m(l)=-1,0,1 and m(s)=+1/2,-1/2 d-> m(l)=-2,-1,0,1,2 and m(s)=+1/2,-1/2 When I did the table, I got 60 microstates. I was wondering if it was correct because I don't know how to enter it in the n(microstate) equation. I don't know if i=8 and j=2 or i=5 and j=2 and neither of them give me 60 anyway. Could you please explain what I'm doing wrong there?

Looking for a simple and straightforward answer to a question of the same type I'm trying to make hydrochloric acid from NaCl and H2SO4. When I added them together (acid was ~94% conc.) the result was hot, foamy acid everywhere and hydrochloric acid fumes filling the room. I'd like to keep my HCl dissolved so I can practically distill it. Does this happen or does sulphuric acid force the HCl out of solution?
