I came across some interesting thoughts regarding extraterrestrial intelligence in the universe. Bottleneck No. 1 The host star must be of the right variety in order to provide temperatures for a planet for billions of years. It must not belong to a binary or multiple star system (which eliminates two-thirds of stars), since planets with circuluar orbits cannot form there. Also, it must be of the right size. A star much smaller than the sun would require the planet to orbit closer in order to be in the habitable zone where water could exist as a liquid, but this would create tidal forces that would slow its rotation, causing it to cook on one side (as with Mercur…

I'm doing a frog experiment. I am testing if frog deformation is caused by water pollution. My teacher said to look at Frog breeding cycles to design an experiment. any ideas of how to do this?

ok, I need to predict what would happen if deformed frogs in a polluted area over time would Deformation be excessive or deformed frogs in a clean area would over time and generations be less deformed.???? How would i do this, and how can i put this in a data table or how would i explain my results? Where can i get info on this?

Prospecting Beneath the Seas For decades, scientists have searched for plants that contain disease-fighting compounds. Some powerful cancer drugs are derived from a flower that grows in the forests of Madagascar. But experts say a better place to search for these natural medicines may be among the myriad life forms that dwell in the ocean. As NPR's Eric Niiler reports, researchers are now scouring the seven seas in hopes of finding the next blockbuster drug. Full article: http://www.npr.org/display_pages/features/feature_953341.html On my way back from school I was listening to the radio while they talked about this subject. Sounded intresting (esspecially abo…

Thanks guys. I found these formulas on the internet, Calculation of internal heat production, H (from McIntyre, 1980) H (W.m-2) = (M x (1- h)) x 1/AD where M = metabolic free production (W.m-2), h= mechanical efficiency and AD is the body surface area (m2). I have all of the values but I don't understand the unit.(W.m-2) (-2 is a superscript) Any help?

You are given four test tubes containing purified biological macromolecules. The test tubes are unlabeled except for a number between 1 and 4. You are told that one test tube contains a protein, one contains a lipid, one contains a carbohydrate, and one contains a nucleic acid. You then perform some tests on the macromolecules and collect the following information: a. Test tubes #2 and #4 contain nitrogen, but the other tubes do not. b. The contents of test tube #3 are not soluble in water, but the contents of the other test tubes are soluble in water. c. The contents of test tube #1 can be broken down into subunits that are all exactly identical to each other. d. The mac…

Calculation of metabolic free energy production, M (modified from Parsons,1993) M (W.m-2) = (((EE x VO2 x t)/(t x 60))/AD) where EE = energy equivalent (J.L O2-1), VO2 = oxygen consumption (L.min-1), t = exercise time (min) and AD = body surface area (m2). but I don't know what the energy equivalent and oxygen consumption is. Any help?
