I didn`t know wether this belonged in Chemistry or Physics, so I figured I`de put it here to be on the safe side I`de like to know, what makes the elements, Manganese, Iron, Cobalt and Nickel so special in the way that they are the only elements that will stick to a magnet? why not Copper or Silver for instance? and is the reason that they`re all side by side on the periodic table anything to do with it?

I`m sure everyones seen a blank TV screen and heard and seen the "static" on there or tuned between a Radio station and heard the same noise? I`de like to know WHAT we`re seeing/ hearing when we do that. yes some will be transistor noise as the electron pass the depletion zone, you can often hear a hissing sound when you turn an amp up to full volume without an input... that`s the transistor noise only and not the same thing the same effect can bee seen on a vacume tube TV or radio however, and these don`t suffer from transistor noise nor do MOSFET radios. now I`ve heard that this "static" is remnants of the "big bang" and other such things as 21 centimeter hyd…

I think most people at sometime or another heard the sound an Amplifier makes when you touch the input lead, that sort of Burrrrrrr, sound. I`de like to know what causes it? now at 1`st the answer may seem simple but for a few reasons. the same sound occurs even on battery powered amps in the middle of nowhere. the sound is always the same frequency too? about 50 to 60Hz ish. that made me wonder if it was something to do with mains electricity around the Earth. or maybe the fact that were struck by lightening about 50 times per second at least somewhere on Earth at any given time (but the frequency seems to constant for that to be possible). It occurs on ships in the mi…

1). "Homeopathy must first show THAT it works - Scientifically - then it will get all the support it needs for HOW it works". 2). The problem is that Homeopaths are not Scientists. Their attempts at explaining how it works are usually met with derision - attention should be focused on the kind of Scientific testing that shows conclusively THAT it works, not HOW it works. But Homeopathy's ways differ fundamentally from those of Science, so how Homeopaths are not likely to be able to contribute to the Scientific task. 3). So, Homeopaths cannot do Scientific research, which must be left to the Scientists. The problem is, the Scientists doing the experiments usually…

Just because something is difficult to prove, that doesn't mean Scientists should just turn their noses up at it. There is a Scientific problem to be solved, so it should be considered. I refer to Classical Homeopathy. The bizarre nature of its mechanism is astonishing, but it is still rational. A German doctor noticed that many substances prepared in the right way produce "symptom patterns" in people. These medicines are acting on the Brain's Homeostatic Centre. Dr Hahnemann simply threw 1000's of these substances at the Brain (using healthy people as subjects) to understand the mechanism of this Homeostatic centre...and he actually solved the problem of…

This new thread is basically about the earth and all the things that are screwing it up.. post your replies please.. I just wanna read your opinions...thanks The main problem that is present in the world is mainly due to attitude. While I must agree that much of my present lifestyle is extremely comfortable, I must say that much of it isn't exactly what can be called as resource conscious. In fact, much of it is very resource consuming, despite the fact that I do know that. It seems very difficult to find that motivation to become more resource conscious and change my way of living. It means that I have to bid adieu to many of the comfortable things that I have ta…

How would a 15 thousand pound "Daisy Cutter" bomb affect an out-of-control wild fire? Would the explosion destroy or engourage it? This might be a cheaper, faster way of fighting the fires of BC and the WA and Oregon States.

This may be a bit basic for the physist on this forum, but its causing arguments amoung my colleagues and I. I think I know the answer but am unable to prove it... Consider the following experiment… Two identical fridges with portable power sources are switched on in london and set to 5 degrees. A standard can of coke is placed in each. One of the fridges is transported to central antarctica. The fridges are then left switched on for 2 months. Robots inside the fridges then take the temperature of liquid in the cans. The question is… Will the cans be the same temperature? Or will they differ and if so how?

I was reading this article about traveling back in time and some complications that may occur and there was this part about 'the bucket effect'. This basicaly means that when you travel back in time, you will bring matter with you. Just bits and pieces like Oxygen atoms, fluff ect. This is all very vague but the fact is you will be introducing more material in that place in time than what previously existed. Noone knows what would happen. Anything you send back in time would actually allready exist there in some form. If we said for arguments sake that when you send stuff back in time, it remains stable and exists as normal. This means that if it gets 'left behind' yo…

perhaps about cliche question, but the nature what exactly i want to know is somewhat more creative. Light is electromagnetic radiation right? So whether the frequency is visible to us or not, its all light. So radio is light, and gamma is light---- right? So then how do you determine the speed of light? Any other information on light would be nice, but those are my main concerns i guess

When I used to play certain vinyl records I wondered what caused the opening bars(about 2secs) of the music to sound, very quietly, before the music actually started. I termed it a pre-echo. I could understand it better if it came after the music had begun (maybe immediately at the end of a track, I wouldn't be able to hear it otherwise). It doesn't happen on CD's and I can't remember it happening on tape. Can anyone explain this. eddyw

answering a question in the "pre-echo" thread, I came upon an interesting idea/invention, allow me to try it out on ya`ll have you ever been driving down a Motorway/highway/Autoban an encountered those rumble strips, like mini speed bumps that vibrate the hell out of your car? well applying the same principal as used in the grooves of a record, these strips could be lain in such a way so as to not only just vibrate, but give an audible/vocal message as well! the closer the strips the higher the pitch and furter appart the lower the pitch and so on. a "STAY AWAKE" or "Sharp bend approaching" etc.. message could be embeded into these bumps, a bit like a bar cod…

I was checking this A.I. chatbox http://aimovie.warnerbros.com/ 'It' is quite stupid although it says it isn't Does someone know a better program ? I wonder if they put emotions in it would it be based on a formula or just based on 'data tables'. would you be able to tell the difference? with 'data tables' I mean: if X or Y then I'm sad. if A or B or C then I'm happy. with formula I mean: all inputs are presents. an other question: is it possible to feel without the ability of imagination?

Just curious as to whether there are any subscribers to the intelligent design stance? Personally I think it's a bit like creationism in disguise and also smacks of sitting on the fence. Me, I support evolution. But of course I could be wrong and maybe we are all just a giant experiment in somebody/thing's petri-dish.

  23. Manned spaceflight is an extremely dangerous undertaking for those involved at the sharp end: the actual crew members, whose continued commitment and bravery, despite the tragic losses incurred by the shuttle program, is an inspiration to us all. They are - both astronauts and cosmonauts - giants amongst men. I salute them all. There is a risk attached to all aspects of a manned space mission: from lift off - when the crew is propelled upward by a barely controlled explosive chemical reaction - during the actual spaceflight where the crew are exposed to hard radiation and the possibility of a catastrophic encounter with a piece of debris left over from previous m…

This topic discusses the raging Homeopathy debate. Hahnemann wrote books 200 years ago on a medical system that must have worked for him to have known so much about disease and how to cure it - he extended his own life to more than three times the life expectancy for someone born in 1755. His books are so rational and flawless, it is impossible to believe that this is anything other than a valid medical system. Everyone feels they have the right to dismiss Homeopathy, though how could they know. They want Scientific proof but do not want to contribute to discussions on how to find that particular kind of proof. I am not a homeopath, have no financial interest, j…

You see satellites and the space station using solar panels to fuel themselves. Is it not possible to generate electricity in space. Knowing that if you spin something in space it spins forever unlike earth where it takes a force to move something. and a conductor cutting the flux in a magnet produces current. Unless I am missing some information, it should be real easy to produce a great deal electricity in space. So why do they use monster size expensive solar panels instead?
