I am working through an old exam in preparation for a scholarship exam, and am stumped on a few problems. I would appreciate if someone could help me out. I have some answers for a couple of the problems, but wanted you guys' ideas to bounce off mine. I am going to post a few problems on here. Thanks a bunch! (BTW - I am new here. HELLO ) An "irregular hexagon" is a two-dimensional shape with 6 straight sides, of varying lengths, which can otherwise have any size or conformation. That is, a given angle at whih two adjacent sides meet can be just about anything. Jack Chalk cuts two irregular hexagons out of paper. They have the same overall shape, but one is mu…

Do you know the answer? And do you know the ad? This example was in a full page mag as which appeared in many 'slick' magazines during summer 02. Two young girls apply for jobs with a local business which is hiring. The manager doing the hiring notices that the two girls have the same last name, and look absolutely identical. Not only do they look exactly alike, they are even wearing dresses of the same style and color, and have the same accessories and hair style. When asked, the girls explain that indeed they are born at the same time and place, to the same parents. "They you two girls are identical twins?" the manager asks. The girls both laugh. One says, "We…

In order for the questions to make sense, transport yourself mentally to a few years ago when anyone would tell you his or her SSN when asked. 1. How many people would you have to approach before you had a 50-50 chance of finding another person whose SSN has the SAME LAST TWO DIGITS as your own? 2. How many people would you have to approach before you had a 50-50 chance of finding at least TWO people whose SSN have the SAME LAST TWO DIGITS?

Prof. Man and wife are browsing a large mulit level dept store that had just opened. Wife stops for a few minutes to examine a display of summer froks, and then realizes her husband had gone on without her. she was about to wander aimlessly in search of him, when she recalled one of his lectures which she had heard the end of, after coming to campus to pick him up. He had demonstrated that if two people are trying to find one another in a large space with very limited sightlines, they find one another much sooner on the average if one stands still, rather than if each wanders in search of the other. Wife therefore decides to stay among the dresses until her backtrackign h…

In four hours I need a synopsis of two articles on global warming, one of which is useful and one of which has bad science in it. Anyone who knows about it, could they link me and then give me a quick idea of why it's good/bad science? Oh and that government report they just released does not count apparently. School sucks. Thanks in advance guys.

Heres another problem that I am working on, any help is appreciated: Once upon a time, Paul invented a board game. The king was so happy with the game that he offered Paul his weight in gold. Paul said he did not want the gold. Instead Paul asked for rice. Paul said to the king: "Please put 1 grain of rice on the first square of my board game, 2 grains of rice on the 2nd square, 4 grains of rice on the 3rd square, 8 grains on the 4th square, and so on until the 36th square is filled." "Just give me the rice on the 36th square" said Paul. Compare the value of the quantity of rice on the 36th square with the value of Paul's weight in gold. You…

hmm blike could probably heelp. ok the question is to transform benzene into a fused ring. I dont know how to name the product but this is the reaction to obtain the product. Starting from benzne A/add maleic anhydride1/XS ALCL3 heat, 2/water B/reduce via Zn(Hg) HCL and heat C/ PCL5 D/ 1/XS ALCL3 2/ water(this creates the fused ring) My question is the mechanism. For A>B I have the electron from the benzene attack one of the carbonyl from maleic anhydirde whcih gives the o a (-) charge with a alcl3 attached to it. No resonance thus far right? The O takes a proton form the water and you are left with OH. Now to get form C->D the cl attacks the …

    a) Bronze is an alloy of copper and tin in the ratio 7:3. How much tin must be added to 35kg of copper to make batch of bronze? and is this right ... 7:3 7 + 3 = 10 Copper = 35 kg Tin = 10.5 (Tin) 35kg ÷ 7 = 10 x 5 = 50 so therefore 50/10 x 3 = 15kg (tin). so 15kg of tin will be required to make a batch of bronze. I have a diagram that shows a cylindrical tank designed to store oil. it has a height of 3.4m and a lenght of 2.8m. could you tell me how i am to solve this problem. if The outside of the tank is to be painted. It is stated that the paint in one tin will cover an area of 5m2. How many tins of paints are needed to do the job? …

I basically know how to complete the equation if I knew what kind of reaction it is. Can anyone give me tips on how to recognize what kind of chemical reaction it is? HCL(aq) + Zn(s)-> H2O2 +MnO2-> I think that this is a double replacement. CuCl2(aq)+ Mg(s)-> NH4NO3(aq)+NaOH(aq)-> Cu(NO3)2(aq)+Ni(s)-> AgNO3(aq)+NaCl(aq)-> I think that this is a single replacement. Ni(NO3)2(aq)+Cu(s)-> HCL(aq)+CaCO3-> I need this on Monday so if anyo…

I am asking for hints to improve circut not necessaily making it.

I'm testing all kinds of vegatable and fruit juice to see if they cange color in the Acid/Base solution. Do you have any suggestions (Of course I'm going to use cabbage juice) They would help me alot! I really respect you all, especially your college degrees, and I will very much appreciate your help and suggestions! PS- Most of my Chem grade rides on this Science fair

  21. Hello Everyone. I have to construct my own experiment for 9th grade science. It will take place on a canoe, or at least data will be gathered on a canoe. The subject can be anything in earth science, ecology, etc. So far, my idea is to test one type of plant for amounts of chemicles in them, if possible, and than test water around that plant. I can make inference like there is "salt" around a plant and it absorbed alot, if the plant is in good condition I could say its skill of dissolving "salt" is a good skill. I can do the same with many chemicles, and a plant in bad condition. By comparing all of the data I could see the relationship beetween water propert…

I am just looking to have some general place to start my design with. Thanks a lot, any help is greatly appreciated. ~evlich

Then from that class choose 2 other orders and 2 families from each of those orders ending with species from those families. Example Order 1 -> species 1 Order 2 -> Famliy 1-> Species 2 Family 2->Species 3 Order 3 -> Famliy 1-> Species 4 Family 2->Species 5 All orders from same class Now, I must do this for each kingdom. Ive done it quite easily for Animaliae, Plantae, and Fungi .. Yet Protisai, Eubacteria, and…

When there is no sunlight most plants can't do too much. The sunlight is what actually gives the engergy to split the water molecules into oxygen, so without it no oxygen is produced, and without the high engergy elections formed in this process the plants cannot regenerate NADPH which is required for carbon fixation of the Calvin cycle. So as a result no oxygen gets produced and no carbon dioxide gets used. The second question I believe is because all( almost all) plants only have stoma on the bottom of the leaves. Hope that helps.

Hi everyone! I was just assigned a submarine project. We need to design a submarine that will: 1. Float 2. Subsurface Float (Below Surface. Not touching top of water and touching bottom)(Must subsurface float for 5 sec.) 3. Sink 4. Float Again The project is due next Tuesday (December 16th) and there are very little details on what you can use. I am focusing on using a bottle, coins, and air tubing, and air holes drilled into the side of the bottle. I think I have a working idea but it needs improving. If you have any ideas/hints/comments about this project I would appreciate it. Thanks!
