Hi, I'm currently taking a microbiology lab this summer (btw, I love this lab it's a lot of fun!), and I have a few questions. They aren't "HW" questions, just me curious wanting to know why (sometimes I think the bane of my existence as I'm always asking the how's and why's behind things, drives my family crazy sometimes.lol.). First one is regarding negative staining. Why don't you heat fix the slide for negative staining? I know for others, like Gram stain, you need to but what would heat fixing do for a negative stain? Would it cause an encapsulated cell to show no halo? The 2nd concerns acid fast bacteria. Why are they gram positive? I know the differ…

Hi, I'm new here, but I really needed an answer to my question. I wasn't exactly sure where to put this, but since it's homework I decided to put it here. On the 10th, I started growing a Bread Mold Colony. I took four samples of bread, poured a small amount of water over each, placed them in separate plastic bags, then placed one on my counter in the kitchen where I usually keep bread, another in a window, one in the freezer, and one in the fridge. For reference this is Whole Wheat bread. My dilemma is that an unidentifiable substance has grown on the bread I placed in the window. None of my other bread had this problem. It is growing out of the top and over th…

  9. Let me begin by introducing myself, Well, I will refer to myself as Burbuat. I have, for the past 4 days, tried to identify an unknown substance provided for me by my teacher. We have 8 days to identify this unknown substance, but I am afraid I will not be able to correctly identify this unknown substance without proper assistance. We have run some basic tests to try to hint at what the substance may be, but I will need your help in narrowing it down. We have done a flame test, and the flame burned at an orange/yellow flame, although my group swears they see a tiny hint of purple now and then, but I believe that is just paranoia sinking in form our approaching de…

  11. Final is coming up, and I'm going over all my homework. I'm trying to understand this part, though, and i'm not sure I get it. Question: Two non interacting particles of mass m each are inside a cubical box of side a and rigid walls (potential 0 inside and infinity outside). a) Write the states for the lowest 3 values of the energy if the particles are distinguishable. What is the degeneracy of each level? So, this is an infinite square well in three dimentions, with two particles: Energy eigenstates are represented with: [math]E_n=\frac{\hbar^2 \pi^2}{2ma^2}(n_{x_1}^2+n_{y_1}^2+n_{z_1}^2 + n_{x_2}^2+n_{y_2}^2+n_{z_2}^2 )[/math] In an infinite square we…

  13. hi guys, sorry to hastle everyone. I have a big assignment due tomorrow, and have had no luck at all with 2 of the questions. I really need solutions ASAP, and hate to ask, but im stuck and i am desperate for the solutions in order to pass the subject. If anybody can help me out, I will happily donate to this site quite generously!! (i must apologise if i am breaking any rules) here they are: 1. Verify the Gauss Divergence Theorem: ∫∫∫∇ ⋅F dxdydz= ∫∫ F .nˆ dA , where the closed surface S is the sphere x^2 + y^2 + z^2 = 9 and the vector field F = xz^2i + x^2 y j + y^2 z k . 2. Find the molar enthalpy (kJ/mol) for vaporization at this temperature. State any "assumptions" made. ---- I tried using Clausius-Clapeyron relation but I dont know what to do with the given relation. I also do not know what to do with the densities. I have been stuck on this problems for hours. Any pointers will be greatly appreciated. Thank you

The geometric sum to infinity of a series with a ratio of r, and started with a, is calculated to be: G(infinity) = a/(1-r) But I am thinking of: Each term in a series could be represented by: a(0) = a; a(n) = ar^n, so why can't we integrate a(n) with respective to dn, giving us (ar^n)/(ln®), but obviously this is the the expected answer. I'm interested in what makes such a difference. Thanks.

So, I was given an unknown chemical that I was to identify. Along with that chemical, I was given an NMR and a series of 7 tests to complete to identify this unknown chemical. I have all the results now, but I have been trying to figure out what this chemical is, but I can't. I know that it is either a ketone, aldehyde, alkene, or an alcohol due to a series of solubility tests. 1) My IR that I took showed a strong O-H and a strong C=O stretch. 2) The 2,4-DNP test produced a yellow precipitate (no conjugation 3) It reacted with CrO3 to produce a brown product (either a primary or secondary alcohol) 4) When mixed with Bromine, there was a color change to orange (doub…

Give (draw) examples of how the dipeptide (L-Asn-L-Leu) could participate in each one of those types of interactions with functional groups frequently found in proteins? Make it clear exactly what atom/group is interacting with what other atom/groups. Explain the interaction you have drawn and why they fit one of the three categories given? Hello all, I'm in organometallic chem right now, and this question is on our new problem set: The rxn of IrCl3 with EtOH produces trans-Ir(PPh3)2(CO)Cl aka Vaska's copmlex along with 2HCL and CH4. When isotopically labeled ethanol is used (CH3CH2OH), the carbonyl ligand is fully enriched in 13-C. Provide a mechanism. Do not worry about the degree of solvation or PPh3 coordination at each step. IrCl3 + 2 PPh3 ---Ethanol---> Vaska's Complex I talked to my professor this afternoon, and he was somewhat helpful, but I'm still having problems. He said to remember that the starting Ir complex dissociates in polar solvent, so there would be constant lig…

Hey guys, Homework question: Two exotic particles of spins 1 and 3/2 form a bound state. a) What are the possible values of the total spin of the bound state? -- So, I know that: [math]s_{1}=3/2[/math] [math]s_{2}=1[/math] [math]S = (s_{1}+s_{2}) , (s_{1}+s_{2}-1) ... |s_{1}-s_{2}| = 5/2, 3/2, 1/2 [/math] Also, 'm', is defined according to what I've read as: m=-s, -s+1,... +s So in this case, m would be: [math]m_{1} = -3/2, -1/2, 1/2, 3/2[/math] [math]m_{2} = -1, 0, 1[/math] Which is where I am getting stuck. My m1 and m2 have different number of components. When I compose the possible states, how does this work out?? [mat…
