http://www.nature.com/nsu/040301/040301-9.html Small precentage or not: EEK. They mention an ethical code that scientists writing papers would have to sign in order to maintain ethical work ----> I thought that thing existed already!! isn't there already some sort of committee that oversees Ethical behaviour in science and medicine!? Sheesh, if not, that's S-C-A-R-Y. ~moo

This is taken from the Beeb This is taking prosthetic enhancement far beyond replacement limbs, organs etc. What are people's opinions on the ethics surrounding this? Is the process of prosthetic enhancement ethically sound or just a whole can of worms that should stay securely shut?

This is all over the news here in Tampa. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,100117,00.html Apparently some woman has been in a coma since 1990. The woman's husband wants to pull the feeding tube, because she expressed wishes not to be kept alive artificially. The woman's parents, however, are calling it 'murder' because they think she shows signs of possible communication, etc. The doctors testifying in the case say that her facial twitching and expressions, and occasional moans are reflexes, not indications she is trying to communicate. Thats a tough place to be in, especially the doctors and the people involved who are giving their medical opinion. …

How do you guys feel about medically treating illegal aliens in your country? Lets say for instance an illegal alien comes into the emergency room and needs some sort of immediate, expensive care. More than likely the hospital will automatically treat him before they can obtain an extensive history. Should this patient be treated? What happens to him after the treatment? Should he receive followup care? Who pays for his bills?

Read it properly: "CHICAGO - The American Medical Association endorsed cloning for research purposes Tuesday, putting the nation's largest organization of doctors officially at odds with the Bush administration. The policy, adopted without debate at the AMA's annual meeting, says cloning for research purposes is ethical. But the policy allows doctors who oppose the practice to refuse to perform it. The measure does not support reproductive cloning [italics added] and is strong in its call for proper oversight." As far as I recall, this is line with my posts on the topic of cloning: Yes for theraputic purposes, no for reproductive puroses.

First of all, let's start by using the proper term for what is being debated: somatic cell nuclear transfer. Here are some arguments against this process and widely morally acceptable processes that work against reasons why somatic cell nuclear transfer is wrong: 1) "It's unnatural." -Ok and? Look around you, 99% of what you're looking at isn't natural. Hair coloring isn't natural, vaccines aren't natural, most prescription drugs you take aren't natural, your glasses/contacts aren't natural. Gene therapy isn't natural either. -Identical twins occur naturally, so it shouldn't be unacceptable to reproduce this effect. 2a) "We should not interfere with the …

Do you guys think bringing back extinct species is a good idea, or bad idea. Personally, I think its a good idea, as long as its limited and controlled. I can't say that I'm for repopulating africa with extinct species. There's a reason they went extinct, and bringing them back could disrupt the ecosystem. As long as we're not reviving some form of ultra immune deadly bacteria, i'm all for it.

Stem cells migrate from bone to brain Autopsies on four dead women have shown for the first time that stem cells in bone marrow can develop into brain cells, not just blood and bone cells as previously thought. The discovery suggests new approaches for repairing damaged or diseased brains. Stem cells themselves could be used, or the signalling chemicals that instruct them to become brain cells, although these have yet to be identified. "I think it's very encouraging to know that there are cells in the human bone marrow that have the capability to reach the brain and become neurons," says Eva Mezey, who led the team that made the discovery at the US National I…

Controversies go on without a final say as to whether or not cloning should be allowed. I think that it's morally incorrect and to fool around with nature is one day going to lead to a catastrophe .But how will it affect us? Are we going to be intimidated by our superior clones? Are they going to distort the human mind to such extent that crazy ideas will lead us to do unimaginably horrid things? Please send in your opinions. What do u think about all this? How do u think it will affect us?Positive or negative effects? FEEDBACK ESSENTIAL!!!

On ER tonight, all the doctors and nurses walked out because of horrible working conditions, leaving the patients without care. This has happened a few times in real life. Where do all the health related members (and everyone else too) weigh in on this?

  13. I saw this, I dont know if anyone else did. Anyway i do not oppose cloning, but who gives a crap about my opinion... Well in this CNN Interview, it was shown that sperm is NOT NEEDED in reproduction. An egg-cell from a Sergate mother will be taken, all the DNA will be stripped of this cell and the mother's (who will be cloned) DNA is inserted into the egg. The mitocondrial DNA will not be removed however, which will cause the clone to be a 99% copy. The 1% comes from the sergate mother's mitocondrial DNA. This was very interesting indeed. My question to you is, do you think the clone will have the same personaliy as the mother? The clone will have di…
