    I'm curious as to the process of how eukaryotes combine and chromosomes. For example, a human male gamete and a human female gamete combine. What exactly happens during this process? How are the chromosomes that are inherited determined, and are they the only determination?

    It seems that they have genetically engineered bacteria to produce cellulosic ethanol much more efficiently. The bacteria in question is Thermoanaerobacterium saccharolyticum, a thermophilic anaerobic bacterium, now with the genes involved in organic acid formation knocked out, so that it produces ethanol as the only detectable organic product.     Hello, I have a question about the aging process. We can often read in the scientific papers that part of the aging process is due to DNA diseases. Following this principle, I wonder why those mutations and diseases accumulated within a lifetime in the DNA molecule do not seem to be transmitted to our childs ? Briefly, why do babies still born young ? Are there any specific DNA repair systems within the gamet production or within the first embriologic cell divisions ? Do DNA really degrades ? Are there any other explanation that could explain this paradox ? I thank you for your precious help. Pierre.

    Recent findings suggest blue eyes arose from a mutation in some melanin-controlling gene 6000 - 10000 years ago in a population that lived close to the black sea right? And then it spread from there. But how did that recessive trait suceed to spread so well? Im wondering if it was of sexual selection (that it was merely an pysically attractive trait), luck or practically benefiting in survival (i.e improved vision)?     I was taking a break and went for a swim, this idea popped into my head. If you look at the DNA, in almost all cells, the DNA carrys a bunch of genes that have no apparent functionality, in its day to day life. These are often described as junk genes. The question I have is, why is the DNA such a pack rat? It is like the DNA's attic, basement and garage is full of junk it never uses in its day to day activities. The DNA is not a slob. He has all its junk neatly organized. But why does it keep all this junk. It would appear, life would be much easier if the DNA called Goodwill or the Salvation Army and had them come in and clean out the junk. The DNA would be leaner making…

    is there any evidence that latex intolerance (or intolerance to the pill, etc) is on the increase? I'm thinking that if there's a genetic basis, there should be some kind of reproductive benifit to having a harder time using contraception, but i can't find any papers on it.

    Hello, I am having a difficult time understanding the concept of SNP's and polymorphisms in general. So far, I understand that a SNP is a change in a single nucleotide in the DNA sequence that occurs in greater than 1% of the population. If everyone's genome is not sequenced, then how does anyone know that this particular change in nucleotide is in fact in greater than 1% of the population? If we have a paternal and a maternal chromosome, does the SNP have to occur in one of these or both of these? So is there a chromosome set that everyone is comparing these changes in nucleotide to? Any help would be appreciated.

    Greering I am new, Engineer, Hybrid animals, I have a few questions relating to hybrid animals. The great cat family seems to interbreed and result in hybrids. Why is this? The horse family Donkey, hourse, etc, also do so, can they breed with a zebra or is to too remote genetically. Two questions? The dog family produces hybrids easily. Why is this? The ape and monkey family do not produce hybrids. Why is this? Forgive my ignorance on genetics as I am an Engineer not a geneticist.     This is a bit of an odd one. About 4 years ago there was a sudden spike in the prevalance of Tibial Hemimelia, a deblitating genetic condition in Shorthorn cattle in the states (USA). It was calculated to have arisen from a single sire (bull) which then spread the recessive allele to its progeny. After a while, as I said above, the prevalence spiked, most likely due to distantly related progeny encountering their cousins/grandchildren and getting the TH phenotype expressed.     I wonder if this has been done so far, if not, is it today possible/conceivable? Im talking about engineering plants for producing secondary metabolites. Like, for example transplanting genes from a coca plant (the ones responsible for cocaine synthesis), and transfer it to say, a dandelion. So is it possible to make, say a dandelion, to produce cocaine today? Or for example a more useful metabolite such as taxol, cocaine was just a example, even though the idea of a genetically engineered fastgrowing weed producing expensive cocaine sounds tempting:P.
