There have been many innovations in neuroscience lately, it seems as if the brain can't hold its secrets from us for long. From the first brain prosthesis:

would there be the possibilty of recording the neuro-electrical calls made to the brain by persons waking from sleep, and derieving a pattern from such data. then use it to stimulate or use as playback introduced into the brains of coma victims to induce wakefulness. yes i understand moral implications, but as a measure of last resort. would imagine patterns developed from siblings and parents of coma victim would provide best source. strange thoughts mr d

Hi everybody! I've not been on the SFN forums during the last months, but today I read about an issue that fits quite well into the neuroscience forum I think. It's from a German website, so the text is in German, but I will translate the part I am talking about. Let's begin: From: http://www.karl-leisner-jugend.de/Hinweise%20auf%20Gott.htm What do you think about this? Is the description of the brain structure and of those free synpases correct? Well, at least a Nobel prize winner talks about it... but what about the interpretation that they are receivers for a soul? Are there really no other explanations for them? Why isn't this topic more talked …

When one's foot or hand falls asleep, one usually experiences what is commonly called "pins and needles". Does this sensation come directly from the epidermis, or does it originate in the brain. If I didn't know that the "falling asleep" of the hand or foot consisted of the local nerves becoming non-responsive, I'd assume it originated from the epidermis of the hand or foot. However, if all sensation from the hand or foot is cut off due to the non-responsiveness of the nerves, then how could these pins and needles come from the hand or foot. I've heard of phantom limb phenomena, where an amputated limb is still felt because the brain centers for tactile sensation of that …

Does anyone have an opinion or personal experience with new medical treatments for alcoholism, i.e., the manipulation of neurotransmitters with medicines such as Campral or Gabatril? I believe the correct answer is out there and there aren't enough addicts motivated to recover (scientifically) or have the forum to share this information. I have been studying this area since 1996, have no college education, but can talk intelligently about it. (Currently sober recovering alcoholic)

I am currently a freshman enrolled at UF and have just completed my first semester as a biology major. Offered at my school is an interdisciplinary degree in neurobiological sciences which includes mostly upper-level psych coursework and the core sciences and has an emphasis on research. I have read several books in this subject area and the work definately appeals to me. I've always considered medical school as my first option but I was wondering what other opportunities this degree could afford me post graduation such as further education and of course job opportunities. Being that this is a degree you have to work towards and apply for at my school I really don't know …

So today I got my self out in the blinding, burning sun and went to Barnes and nobles to read some stuff. I read Scientific American and Scientific American Mind today and read up on two interesting articles: One about BC-I another about Smart Drugs What I’m getting at here is the technological and pharmaceutical revolutions that are going to be active within this century. As people become more intelligent, they are going to want to become intelligent at a faster pace. Smart drugs, also known as nootropes, can supposedly bring up the cognitive thinking abilities of people. How well they work... I don't know. In scientific mind they presented some basic dru…

  16. Hey! I have a son who developed a seizure disorder about 3 weeks after birth. I'm happy to say he had his last one over two years ago & is about to undergo his last EEG to reassure the neurologist that he has "out-grown" the seizures & we can start weening him off of his meds. I'm just wondering if an infant can "rewire" their brain around a problem or fix the problem why can't we stimulate this action in other humans? Is it the the constant developement of the childs brain that enables him to do this? If so then why does this differ from ,say, adults learning new things? I'm guessing it may have something to do with where the problem is & possibly how develop…

hello thinking more and more that the computer is beginning to mimic the structure of the human brain. at first computers used a single processor for handling all processing aspects. now however multi processors are used, with different ones handling sound and video, much as the brain uses diferent areas to handle different functions. to that end i believe that sleep might serve for humans what a ram sort does for computers. it apears the brain has a limited amount of ram (random acess memory), shuffling information in and out of rom (read only memory) as needed. however at some point the mind can not hold or process the information shuffling amoungst the form…

My close friend suffers from migraines and occasionally she will lose control of her senses as a result(i.e. hearing things that aren't there) and will have her blood vessels explode and constrict, causing pain. She gets the more mild type of migrains too, but this subtype really has me baffled mainly because I've never heard of it before. Her doctor said it's "rare but not unheard of", so maybe someone around here knows about it? Thanks.

This may seem like a really odd question, but I need to know the answer for a paper I’m writing. My question is also hard to articulate so I hope no one minds if I make it rather lengthy. I’m wondering about how signals in the sensory cortexes of the brain, and particularly in the visual cortex, are relayed to the cognitive centers. Specifically, I’m wondering if the linear processing of information (from simple feature detectors to more complex features to abstract features to concepts and so on) is completely serial or is there some parallel processing, and if there is, how much? For example, the diagram below shows the a simplified model of how information is proce…

an observation I`ve not only made myself but others too. Why is it that when we consume alcohol at a rate, our Cigarette consumption rises too? I`ve seen a 10 a day smoker get through 20 cigs in an evening when on the "pop" this can almost double when on spirits! to the point of chain smoking! what causes this? does the smoke enhance the drink? does the body know that the drink is doing harm and Uses something in the cigs to limit it (a Chemical reaction)? is it a Brain thing? I`ve also noticed that a certain level of intoxication (one I`de consider extreme) that cig smoke makes the situation considerably worse and often ends up in a colapse or... how shal…

Hi, There seems to be a general principle that if a drug binds naturally to a neural receptor, then there must be indigenous neurotransmitters for that receptor. Some have argued that this means the drug can't be all that harmful. I'm just wondering how much truth there is to that. I mean, sure there might be a neurotransmitter that's naturally produced by the body which binds to those receptors, but the use of the drug brings on completely different effects, subjectively and behaviorally. In other words, the drug is mimicking the indigenous neurotransmitter in a very unnatural way or under very unnatural conditions. Take cannabis, for example. THC binds to recept…

I've heard of the binding problem in the neuroscience: how seperate mental functions carried out by separate brain parts come together to form perceptions of something "whole". They say there is no part of the brain that all the electric signals being processed converge to - that is, no part that seems to integrate all this information so that we can have perceptions of whole things. I was wondering how far reaching the bind problem is considered to be. I mean, for example, I know that it means to say that there is no central part of the brain where ALL information converges to for integration, but what about less wholistic things? For example, when I look at an apple, I …
