ewmon
"Microbe Hunters" by Paul de Kruif (1926), very much the classic and still in print "The Hot Zone" by Richard Preston (1994), a best-seller on viral hemorrhagic fevers (ebola etc) "Splendid Solution" by Jeffrey Kluger (2005), excellent about polio and Salk's vaccine
swansont
I recently read Deborah Blum's The Poisoner's Handbook and it was excellent. The history of the development of forensic science in the context of poisoning death investigations in and around NYC, ca 1920-1930. Not sure if this is what you mean by a "medical detective" book, but it's a good read.
