If you don't report the post to preserve what was said, there's not a lot the staff can do. Otherwise, you are banking on a staff member happening along and reading it before it was edited.

 

And even then, there's no guarantee that there was a rules violation that will be acted upon. Having people confuse "attacking the post" with "attacking the poster" is not uncommon.
