Naturally QFT claims that the graviton is both a particle and a field. You can't have it both ways just because you want the physics you were taught to hold up.

 

This is true (in QFT) for all particles. Electrons are just a quantisation of the electron field. Photons are a quantisation of the electromagnetic field. Etc.
