What are tachyons? All I know about them is that they exist above the speed of light. What do they do? What are they for?

There is a "search" function available on this forum, on the off chance that this subject has come up before. (what would be the odds?)

A Tachyon is a particle that travels faster then the speed of light. It is hypothetical as it has not yet been discovered. They could not really do anything as they violate many laws of physics.
