World's Fastest Computer Announced

Featured Replies

5614: my friend, look, using the world's largest computer power for finding a way how to kill humans most effectively is SICK. this is beyond darwin, this is beyond evolution, nature and any ethnic and moral legitimation.

check this out: http://www.thocp.net/hardware/nec_ess.htm i dont know in detail what they are doing with their machine but at least they try to PREVENT people from dying.

5614 was advocating using the computer to reduce casualties.

In any case, using a computer to increase casualties would be no more "sick" than using a brain to carry out the same task.

"My job ... is to ensure that the nuclear weapons in the stockpile are safe and reliable," said Bruce Goodwin, associate director for defense and nuclear technologies. "Safe means no matter what you do to them they don't go off when they are not supposed to. Reliable means that should the president ever have to use one, it will work exactly as it is supposed to."

I saw somewhere on the net that there are gonna be 5GHz processors cooled by liquid nitrogen. Does anyone have any recent, or any info at all on this?

It's pretty much inevitable tbh. In 40 years they'll be old hat (although the fabrication technology will no doubt have to change.)

it already exists!!!!

see: http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/20031230/index.html

and there is a cool video of it too which is a recommended download.

Would you really want a computer permanently embedded in your body?

Reminds me of Isaac Asimov's book Foundation and Earth

processors cooled by liquid nitrogen
wouldnt it get a bit annoying if waterdrops are precipitating?
Why not set the computer to do only 'good' things than 'evil' things , sure if it is powerful enough to do huge amounts of calculations then why not calculate alternate ways 0f saving people from having them resort to war, themore sensible way in saving lives .

you never seen wargames?

Almost didnt turn out very well for Human Kind.

well there will not be a lot of water vapour in the air will there? just normal levels esp. as you tend not to keep computers in rooms which are water-vapoury.

plus the liquid nitrogen is stored in a container, whilst it possible a tiny bit of water precipitates on the side of it, normally it is insulated to keep the cold in so it would be absorbed anyway.

Why "teraflops?"

Why not terahertz?

It was kilohertz, then megahertz, then gigahertz, and now teraflops?

"hertz" is used to specify the clock speed of a CPU.

"flop" is used to measure the number of flating point operations; I think 1 flop = 1 floating pt. operation per second.

Oooooooohhhhhhh.

Thanks.
