So I am wondering what the optimal temperature range for a laptop is. According to SpeedFan my GPU is 64C and my core is 54C.

The temps are maximums...ideally the normal figure wants to be 20c below stated figure according to the above article. Google around for the heat spec on your particular graphics card. You can use Speccy to see what card it is:

The CPU is 51c and GPU is 61c on my laptop. If the cpu hits 70 and the GPU over 80 that's when I get concerned...

Thanks StringJunky. Have a +. :)

Thanks. :) Your computer has Thermal Overload Protection so it will shutdown automatically and probably without warning if it exceeds a predefined level (mine does in this situation)....if the ambient temperature is not unusually warm and it keeps doing it that's when you should suspect a problem. You could kick this mechanism in unwittingly by blocking the fan vent when it's sat on you or soft furnishings.

Yeah in hindsight I left it sitting on my bed, while I was away. So you are probably right that something was blocking the fan.

Does very low temperature give no effects on computer operation?

It does, it alters conductive properties of semiconductors just like heat does.
