i'm building a van der graff generator but i can't put it to work...

 

i think everything is ok, the tube and the sphere (in my case a soda can) have to be closed? (i meant to be no contact with the atmospheric air)

Indeed. During the winter I always drag a chain connected to the ground behind me. Wouldn’t want to build up those lethal static charges.

when i read that, i got this image of someone being electrocuted by lightning every other second, dragging along behind him a massive old chain [from the anchor of a ship!]
