Pictures of the first LHC collision events (at CMS detector)

somehow not as pretty as i was expecting. needs more resolution. CRANK IT UP CERN! WOOO!

We had a bit of fun with our new video to mark the LHC being switched on again...

Some nice explanations too though, in my unbiased opinion... :)

What's the mood been like over there, Severian? Has everyone been in high spirits and all amped up this week?

He he, that's what you get for posting lhc detector pictures and calling it your lab :D

It has been surprisingly muted actually. I think everyone is petrified that it is going to crash again.

Even that picture I linked to was not allowed to be shown to the public today (I had it yesterday), so everyone is being quite careful.

And for the record, I am a particle physicist and I do work on the LHC. I am just not based at CERN at the moment (though I was a few years ago).

I am not sure the exact standards for getting a job. However, I know some universities have REU programs that allow students to work at CERN over the summer. I know for a fact that the University of Michigan- Ann Arbor has such a program.
