there are many good ways to produce oxygen. try decomposing hydrogen peroxide, sodium chlorate, potassium nitrate, etc.

graphite rods are noramlly best' date=' pencil is one way of doing it, but proper graphite rods 1 or 2cm in diameter are best [for water anyway'] as it can vary with the substance.

 

If you plan on doing this for any amount of time you really need some platinum wire. The surface area of the electrode also makes a BIG difference.

That's what I thought too... But when I was trying to make tons of Potassium Hydroxide I left it on overnight one of the electrodes completely reacted...

 

I'm not sure why platinum but I have read that it’s completely inert in electrolysis and I know they use them in those little glass electrolysis machine things.

Huh? Apparently I missed something too. The H2O2 is in another thread and I wasn’t making it I was only purifying it.

 

Edit: oh wait H2O2 was in this thread... If you mix it with MnO2 it makes pure oxygen.

hydrogen peroxide isn't easy to make; don't try it in a home lab.
