question: if a species has the technology to have intersolar travel, why would they need to navigate by screwing with crops? you'd think they would be able to make a map on their equivelant of a computer, but that would make too much sense.

Who said anything about navigation?

In the movie Signs they are visual landmarks for an attack. We havn't been attacked yet - on a large scale at least - so I assume that's out of the question.

Oh right, I haven't seen Signs (which apparently is a good thing) so I took that to mean the symbols were big "attack here!" markers.
