It's difficult to explain, but it comes down to "you decide how much to pay".

 

For instance I pay £0.06 per click for TSA.

Perhaps on Google? Under the directories thing? I just think you need to advertise somehow or tell members to mention this site on their sites. That would help a bit.

We're in the google directories. Overall google has sent us the most referrals over the past year.

Spend $99 on a CD full of "double opt-in" email addresses and some quality mass-mailing software made by "internet experts".

Unless lists like that are only collected from other science sites, it would be a waste of money.
