Anyone going to uni this year? I am, but i am extremley worried and scared, i mean i will not nobody and what if I do not like anyone.

I am in my second year in university right now but I was in the same situation as you. I went to school not knowing a single person there, but it really wasn't a big deal. You meet a lot of people and you'll find people you like. Since you call it "uni" I am assuming you are not from the U.S (edit: just looked at unibuddies.com, I have to assume you're from the UK). I don't know how university works there but here they do a lot of orientation activites to help people get to know each other. A lot of them seem lame at first but some are pretty fun and a real good way to meet people. Don't be worried, just go in with an open mind and don't be shy. You may meet people who you don't seem to click with at first but they could eventually become your best friends.

If you think about it, everyones in the same boat as you so when you get there, people will generally make much more of an effort to be sociable and friendly, as they too want to make new friends quickly. Also theres such a number and diverse mix of people at uni, unless you don't talk to anybody, it will be very unlikely that you won't find someone you get on with.

 

Being called Sheffstudent, are going to sheffield university by any chance?

I'm in my first year at uni up in scotland. I worried a bit before i went. But in hindsight there was no need. I assume Sheffield will have a "freshers week" this is great for making friends. and then there will be group work in your classes which will help you make friends. there are 98 people on my course and i get along with every single one of them and i go out with 32 of them regularly am best friends with 3 and sleep with one. You will have too many friends if anything

 

One bit of advice that is guaranteed to get you some friends on the first day:

 

Bring along a pack of cards.

My advice would be to try talk to as many people as you can on the first day...sounds really stupid...but it makes the whole year easier. Its important to get used to the people and places that you will be around for the next 3 years(at least)

Join tons of clubs you are interested. It is said, those with the same interests get along well.

I'm coming to the end of my third year at university, and all of these guys are right when they say that you have nothing to worry about. You are in total control of how you want to spend your time, and if that is just sitting in your room working or going out for a drink, then that's entirely fine. Everybody on my corridor in the first year was absolutely great, and it has probably been the best experience of my life so far.

I dont know if you've visted the Uni yet but I went for an interview recently I was told they have the biggest student union in the UK and 10% of the inner city population are students, so really its one of the best uni's for socialising.

 

Anyway Sheffield is my second choice so theres a chance I could be at the same uni as you next year.

hmm maybe I should decline my offer and apply for your uni next year, would they accept me on the basis that i'm amazing at ultimate frisbee?
