code - can you figure it out?

Nobody I've shown this to has figured it out. Can you?

Any hints? Is it a Cesarian cypher?

  • Author

I don't know what a cesarian cypher is, but it is probably not.

I invented it myself, and it is not simply a letter-letter exchange

oh and its a passage from a famous book

a cesarian cypher is where you take a knife and cut open a woman's belly then have the little kid inside decrypt it... if its the same cesarian as i'm thinking about

but if not i've no clue

  • Author

I'm pretty sure that's what it is. Newborns are supposed to be the best at solving cyphers. Unfortunately their talent fades after ~3.5 hours.

If it's based on some sort of one time pad it's not breakable. If it's based on an algorithm you might not have given us enough ciphertext to derive a solution.

  • Author

sorry, I don't know what a one time pad is. It's based on an algorithm, but what isn't?

Do you want more text?

A one-time pad is a random key used only once for only one message generally based on the Vigenere cipher. Do I need more text? No, I'm not really interested in trying to break it.

It's based on an algorithm, but what isn't?
Political satire, the English language, sex.

A Caesarian Cypher? As in the one Caesar used? Shifting all alphabets by a number up and down so a becomes b, becomes c and things like that?

As for the text I have no clue to what it means :-(.

  • Author

ah, well, I guess it's pretty obscure (but if you decode it, it's a quote from a cool book)

  • 2 weeks later...

I don't have the time to sit down and decode this, but it does look somewhat like a Caesar cypher; in which case it's simply a matter of decoding, say, the first line with a variety of permutations of the alphabet until you get one that looks like it might make sense.

If not, the standard method is to analyse the small word and try to guess what they are. You're lucky in that this is quite a long ciphertext, and hence there's quite a few small words in there that you should be able to guess.

Maybe I'll try and write some code (C++) for this later if I'm bored :)

another method sometimes succesfully employed is Letter Popularity and word endings.

"E" for example is the most often used letter in the English language, so a letter Count may be fruitfull, although it Does depend on the cipher type, it does work great when playing Hang-Man :)

  • Author

well, it's not a Caesar cypher, but I'm sure some sort of letter replacement program could be helpful

Well the way to solve it would be pattern anaylsis, going through and looking for things that repeat themselves, and see how they compare to letters or words showing up in regular english. But since we dont have any clues on what the cipher is I doubt any one here will want to take the time to decode it.

  • Author

right, makes sense

I can see how it would be a real bore to try to figure it out

can you give us a hint about the book?

Could you tell us what kind of cypher is it? if it contains random letters then its probably impossible. As is there's not enough information for anyone to want to try :P

Oh! I have a way easier one:

Oh oh! I know what that says! And its true!

not as easy I hope

  • Author

well... it's possible to figure out, as I wrote a program to encode and decode text. However, I will give you the answer... once I can fix my old broken program.

well space bar has to be a letter in this code considering the lack of spaces

s has to be either a g or an e, as to my knowledge those are the only two letters that can appear twice in a row.
