herpguy
If there was a giant magnet orbiting around earth is it possible to get into space simply by riding in a magnetic rocket? Or is there something that will make it impossible? Please reply.
ecoli
distance is a factor with magnetism... also how do you plan on getting this huge magnet off of earth?

herpguy
how do you plan on getting this huge magnet off of earth? Maybe it could be made off earth with space shuttles sending parts of it like how the ISS was built. Also, it will probably orbit at about where man-made LEO sattelites orbit earth, about 800 km off the surface.
Callipygous
and what about how thats going to affect every metal object on earth?
herpguy
and what about how thats going to affect every metal object on earth? I didn't think about that. Maybe there's a way to direct the pull of the magnet.
BigMoosie
If it is strong enough to pull matter up off of the ground then the attraction between it and the Earth's gravitational field will cause it to come crashing down. Here's a quick question, does magnetism decrease with the inverse square of distance like light and gravity? Does everything follow that pattern? Bluenoise
Okay the problem is you have to get it into space. And every action has an equal and oppisite reaction. So for every opject it pulls up it would get pulled down as well an amount proportional to the ratio of their wieghts. So you'd have to go back up and push it out farther again.... Basically you wouldn't save any effort or energy since you have to expend a rediculous amount to get it there in the first place...
