JustJoe
Would a rocket be more structually stable with a vacuum layer between the inner body and external body ?
Sensei
If you have a larger sphere with an inner smaller sphere and a vacuum between them, and the inner sphere will be accelerated, they won't fly together until the inner sphere hits the body of the outer sphere, so you would have to have some structure/mechanism to separate them and accelerate them together. At the moment, human use water as layer of protection against harmful cosmic rays. https://www.google.com/search?q=human+water+layer+protection+cosmic+rays "Currently, NASA and other space agencies plan on using water as a shield against radiation since it is already necessary for human missions. Water has been tested thoroughly and has been proven to be effective." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Health_threat_from_cosmic_rays

I did't know about a water layer which is an interesting concept . I would of thought some sort of microwave door design reversed would be a good way to protect from cosmic rays ? Or perhaps some sort of reversed magnetic bottling that effectively created a force field ?

Sensei
2 hours ago, swansont said: The OP asked about structural integrity, not cosmic-ray shielding . Please stay on-topic My concerns were not primarily about space radiation shielding. I was on the subject because his structure would/could not work.. What is wrong with you today? You cannot have two objects with just vacuum inside - they would collide each other after acceleration of any of them.. ps. Have too much time on vacations from work for government? Buy a 3D printer.. 2 hours ago, swansont said: The OP asked about structural integrity, The structural integrity between the outer surface and the inner surface is none, because there is a vacuum between them and nothing else.... This should be obvious to any physicist (or former physicist)..

OP thought they are interesting: 6 hours ago, JustJoe said: I did't know about a water layer which is an interesting concept . This should be obvious to any physicist (or former physicist).. As I explained the outer shell will be connected to the inner shell via honeycomb form ''strutting'' . The created vacuum will be an auto vac , either the compartment air will be allowed to escape the shell natural through vents or the air will be sucked into the craft into an air tank as the craft ascends .
