Virtual Reality, What happened?

Featured Replies

Ten years ago Virtual reality was the next big thing in computing. Now, it's nowhere to be seen.

What happened? Is VR coming, is there any progress being made or was it all just a fantasy?

Any experts out there?

I read an article in PC GAMER magazine regarding some headset that lets you see 360 degrees of a virtual realm, and doesn't burn your eyes out or give you a headache.

I forgot the link, check out PC GAMER's site.

Virtual relaity has not faded away - it's used extensively in biochemistry, architecture, engineering, underwater/subterranean surveying, surgery, and so on.

Afaik it's still a rapidly developing area of computer science. It's only the "home VR" front that withered and died.

Matrix wa nan desu ka.

The military uses virtual reality simulators. There are many video game arcades that track your motions in a fighting game to have your character throw punches at the other character. It's there..

It doesn't have any real application in the home area (yet). The equipment is extremely expensive and usually very specific in nature - this makes it only useful for applications in medicine, armed forces, etc.

What sort of applications is it used for in medicine? Some sort of simulation of the bodies inside?

"... and this room of the penthouse suite has both a virtual ceiling AND a virtual flo--- oh god nooooooooo!!!!!"

Thats not what I meant... It is used to see what a building would look like before it is built.
