Effects of chemicals to aquatic life...

Featured Replies

Hi.

What effects can calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, potassium chloride, sodium chloride, potassium acetate; cause to aquatic life in rivers and lakes ?

In a nutshell: the chlorides negatively affect osmoregulation and acetates cause oxygen depletion.

Thank you, StringJunky.

Interesting. Those are the chemicals listed for snow melting, which drain to rivers.

Yeah, that's what I found out looking it up. I knew what the chlorides did - affect the internal ionic properties/balance of organisms causing them to effectively drown with water - but didn't know the acetate.
