  3. Just thought I would issue an invite to the "Tilted Forum Project" I did not supply a link, as I don't know the actual policy here , and don't want to site plug This is a very entertaining forum...and is in need of people of intellect.....which is why I have posted here. Let me know what you think. if you would.

    Abortion

The general reasoning behind an opposition to abortion is the Murder verdict, "you are anding a life". If indeed this were the case we would avoind burgers and chisken like the plague, but we do not. Thus we must consider that the problems arise from the ending of a HUMAN life. What makes a human, most scientific definitions point to the ability to "think" as a human . The brain waves of a fetus do not produce such patterns until the third tri-mester at earliest and would thus point to human cognitance at this point. To play the safe side we could push R vs. W back a couple months and lower the threshold of error, but the religious factions would still find reason to take away even that from the "personal rights" of the owner of the body carrying the cells. There is no easy answer to this situation when emotions become involved....logic and Data are not the primary motivators in this battle.
  5. Stupidity does not think, ignorance does not know....
  6. Might just as well go to Firefox....like everyone else....works quite well, in my opinion, many features free as well.
  7. Agreed....Io is the only body that has shown dramatic surface change in human timeframes. It is unlikely we could build a craft capable of withstanding the radiation and particle hits in the orbit of Io at this time.....perhaps within a couple decades.

  9. Plans are in place for a Europa mission as well, but more study of the technology needed to get below the surface is in progress. The I dea behind the Titan mission is to use the moon as a template of early earth atmospheric conditions. Much of the interest is the possible liquid state of the surface, and the chemical reactions possible because of it. Carl Sagan ran a series of experiments with a simulated Titan atmosphere, charged by electicity (simulated lightning) and the results were a complex organic compound (tholins) that had major simularities to RNA. It is possible, though not extermely likely, that the surface has the basic components of life. I am hopeful, but not overly enthusiastic that we will find something of great interest there. I do agree that the underlying oceans of Europa may have at least as much chance of creating life, due primarily to the heat created by tidal fluctuations created by Jupiter, but far more Data is required before a mission would have an acceptable chance of success. 10. This could be the first step in something truly fascinating... time for the real fun to start. http://www.rednova.com/news/display/?id=96361
  11. Yes....you could easily define Reiki as a function of the mind...there is far more to it, but that will certainly do.
  12. In my opinion, the growth of spiritual understanding (for lack of a better description) is a function of evolution. There are relatively ancient practices, in use today that can be considered meta in the way they work. I am a level II Reiki practitioner and can tell you the effects are Real. This is merely a form of energy manipulation, and is somewhat dependent on the person receiving the treatment to believe it works. There are quite a few things in this world that go beyond logical explanation, but that , at least to myself, does not destroy the validity they may have.
  13. I had to go with TNG, as it attempted to tackle current issues (albeit in a general way) and defined a civilization closer to that which I would like to see in our future. As a plus, Bradburys' world was rich in somewhat plausible reality, and was based on current technology for the most part....gave it a more realistic feel.
  14. Likely, there was a civilization more advanced than others in the past....as there are today. The accounts of Plato, point towards a compilation of advances, taken from multiple sources of the time and would point towards some level of "creative manipulation" by the author. I would lean towards Yourdad in the belief that this is indeed a work of fiction, attempting to instill a warning in his peers. Obviously to little effect.
  15. I have only one question concerning this issue: Is there evidence available that those immunized will retain protection into adulthood? If not it seems to me we are simply trading the childhood version, and a few itching scars.....for the adult (albeit different ) form , and shingles related damage, up to and including death. By the way...my kids had a chickenpox party last year....four scars and three days of low fever on the worst.
  16. It is my opinion that indeed life is abundant in this universe. That said, the distances, and timescales involved would make contact relatively unlikely in the short lifespan we have had in our civilization. As I firmly believe nothing is impossible (just not done yet) we will likely find evidence of space buddies in the extended future......should we allow ourselves to exist that long. It is pretty much proven that some form of microbe set the stage for the evolution of life on Earth, and these could very well have been of extra-terrestrial origin. This does not mean they were neccessarily "placed" here....but who knows. There is also compelling evidence (Carl Sagans' Tholins) of an early Earth atmosphere, that would have inevitably produced the complex organics needed to create RNA, but again, all of this is theoretical. While I of course, hope for some SETI miracle to find evidence of Alien presence in my lifetime....I am not holding my breath (as this would shorten my lifespan) but I am hopeful.
  17. Yes....I am aware, as I am aware of the three elementary school teachers ejected from a Bush Rally for wearing shirts that said "Protect our Civil Liberties". These are examples of media focus, and selective coverage, as is Mr. Moores film. The point is.....If you truly wish to make an informed descision in todays climate, you must accept all this as mere data, and "become" informed, "before" you make a descision.
  18. Try as I might.....I just dont quite get this. By terrorists do you wish this interpreted by the definition in the dictionary? Or are you attempting to get a rise out of someone? By definition both candidates will have a certain number of terrorist followers, Bush from the Christian hardcores, and Kerry from the Tree huggers.( I really hate using those terms) But literally anyone with a following will have extremists in the flock. - But you will admit that some people that support "The Pope" (or maybe just hate Mohammad) are terrorists.-
  19. I actually found the film to be quite refreshing. If one uses that portion of the brain that actually thinks, and understands where the creators of this production are positioned in the political spectrum....there is little that can be considered negative in the film. It seems to me (and this is only opinion) that information is there to be assimilated and incorporated into our general understanding of the world. I have found American Politics to be a wonderful study on the Human Psyche, you can literally see subconcious motivations at work in obvious ways. Let alone the emotional responses created through Media manipulation of those who are open to it. Mr. Moores' film is simply another form of propoganda, if a relatively accurate one. It is always interesting to watch those opposed to something, as the level of dislike often has a correlation to the fear of the thing. Or the lack of understanding, whether due to intentional ignorance, or inability to seperate from emotional response.
  20. Who is to say radioactivity will not create mutation of the chitin in a roach, and allow for thicker and stronger exo-skeleton. Or that an insect population will not overcome the diffusion of oxygen barrier. The point is, we cannot know what evolution will do with increased mutation, and time.
  21. You are of course....correct. One who has a mind accepting of the possibilities defined in Science Fiction will likely be far more interested in exploration of the "Final Frontier". Does this in itself deminish the prospects of this line of research/exploration, I would have to say no. It is akin to mathematics, in that one who understands algebra, is more likely to have interest in geometry, and from there may persue descriptive, and from there.....who knows, maybe the next Hawking. Imagination, and thus Sci Fi to a certain extent could be argued as a fundamental neccessity in the quest for knowledge. Without those visionaries, who decided to explore the realms of imagination.....where would we be today? Certainly not contemplating the commercial aspects of human space travel.
  22. No longer on the air....unfortunately. Japanimation WW2 Japanese battleship "Yamato" converted to spacecraft and used to battle alien invasion of earthspace. Pre-robotech, but along those lines.
  23. Trekker....is the accurate term I believe.
  24. I see no ethical problems with manipulation of cellular material....regardless of species. It always amazes me to hear of ethical deliberation of such matters, in a society that loves Mc Donalds, and KFC. If indeed the treatment of animals is in question....look into the way chickens are raised as a food source. If indeed the debate concerns the use of human tissue, this is done on a daily basis in vaccine and burn victim reconstruction....with no issue taken, I fail to see the problem. As far as a Hybrid....interesting concept, but I see little value in the result. And the science gained would likely not outway the uproar created in our current society.
