  1. *chuckles* No problem. I have a partner on this project too. Both of us are very competitive, so we are determined to success the egg launcher without breaking the egg. We had some discussion today, and my partner said that we can just initiate the hortionzal velocity where y=0, then when it fall, we just can determine the range. We can control the height of the launcher, as we want to make it short as possible to minimize the acceleration. We are going to make a egg holder with some elastics, and pull the holder. Letting it go, the egg would get out of the holder and land in the container.

     

    Simple as that.

  2. Analysing the problem I think I found an original solution that doesn't involve any padding.

    The trajectory can be decomposed in 3 : the lauch' date=' the "free" flight and the reception in the cup.

    The 3rd step is the one how cause the most problem and from the solution of that step will depend the 2 others.

    The key concept is acceleration: we need to minimize accelerations so the egg won't break. We can decompose the reception in a vertical and an horizontal components.

    Vertical: how do we minimize the vertical acceleration ? By reducing to a minimum the height of the fall. During the free flight the vertical speed is decreasing until zero and after start increasing toward the earth.

    So the egg must pass the rim of the cup when the vertical speed is zero at the top of the free fligth trajectory. That the first part of the solution.(see Vertical on the drawing)

     

    Horizontal: how do we minimize the horizontal acceleration ? By minimazing the horizontal speed and maximizing the time or distance the acceleration take place.Minimizing the horizontal speed mean increasing the free flight time. The longer time it take to cross the 2 foots the slower will be the horizontal speed. (see under Horizontal VH1 and VH2 velocitys)

    In the drawing egg B will decelerate under the smallest distance, but egg A will have the radius of the cup to decelerate. So the best entry point is on the side of the cup.

    Also by entering by the side the deceleration can be converted in the rotation of the egg. I suggest sending the egg with the rotation axis to the vertical.

    For the launcher it is easy to find a lenght that will enable any flight speed.

    You must adjust for the form of the egg and the form of the cup to make sure that the center of mass of the egg is below the rim when the contact occur.

    May be by launching a rotating egg can help ???

    I appreciated your scientific approach to my project. However, there's still no answer how I would create the launcher powerful enough to send the egg in the air, yet minimizing the acceleration of the free fall.

  3. can anyone tell me how i can measure the distance from one point to another with something like lasers or whatever (i.e. not by direct surveying)

     

    Could you be more specific? Any real situation that you are in right now?

  4. That's a poor assumption with no reasonable fact behind it. For instance, you have infinite numbers of papers, and how would you know if a single paper would have something written on it, other than the original written paper (Earth)? That's why we have scientists exploring the space everyday trying to find other type of living (species) than on the Earth.

  5. I cannot put softening layers on the egg. I cannot change the angle of the container neither.

     

    I don't see how a raw and a boiled egg would have a difference in travelling distance. They should weight the same before/after. I guess I'll have to test it out.

     

    The question of how to make the launcher still remains. Remember I need a constant velocity for every time.

     

    I guess I could make one that would send the egg into the air into a short narrow parabolic, and the egg would go in the container only few centimetres away.

     

    The problem still arise: Need something powerful enough to send the egg in the air.

  6. You guys are getting the wrong idea. I can't moderate or reshape the container. I can only make the launcher. I can experiment it with boiled egg here at home, then at the real demo, I have to use raw egg.

     

    The idea of the "launching" is to fly the egg through the air into the container ok? The idea is to get a constant initial velocity, because that way, I'll get appromixately the same range (trajectory) everytime I launch the egg.

  7. Here's an update on the project:

     

    I can use ANY materials to make the launcher for the egg to be launched in any range (hortionzal direction) I want it to. The cup would be medium sized, like the circumstance of a 2L ice cream container. It will be filled with a few layers of kleenexes at the bottom.

     

    My idea is to make the height of the launcher low as possible to minimize the vertical velocity of the egg when it launches. So any suggestions on the creation of the launcher? :)

  8. My condition has gotten worser. More tiny spores starting to appear all over my body, but not as bad as the orginal place where it started. (Along the hair line on the back of my neck and on the right knee). The fungus would find more dead skins on my body to feed on. I showered every twice days, and it seems not to be enough. It's also so itchy that I need to do something to distract me.

     

    I continue to use creme twice a day to cure it, but it seems to get worser. Thanks for the suggestion of washing my bed sheets and clothes, I should do that.

     

    I was told that it might get 2 to 3 weeks until I can completely eliminate the fungual illness.

    I already tried this experiment (1 to 100), and it did work. You should get: 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23, 29, 31, 37, 41, 43, 47, 53, 59, 61, 67, 71, 73, 79, 83, 89, 97.

     

    Do you want the general formula for x for infinite amounts of prime numbers?

  10. In physics class today, my teacher told us that we will have a project where we have to make an egg launcher with an uncooked egg. Our mission is to launch the egg 2 feet away into a cup (With the correct amount of force). Bonus: If the egg didn't break, we'll get a perfect score, and don't have to pass in our lab report. If it does break, then we'll have to pass it in.

     

    I'll get more information tomorrow, with the details. Any suggestions how I can make an egg launcher that won't break the egg when it lands in the cup?

  11. I got a case of Dermatophytes (common name is "Ring Worm") for almost two weeks now. You ever got it or heard of it before? Ring Worm also termed tinea corporis, is an infectious skin disease caused by mold-like fungi called Dermatophytes. The fungus are dependcy on your dead skins to keep them alive. The common symptoms for ringworms are itching, burning, dryness, or circular flaky rashes on the skin. Areas such as the back of neck/hairline, back, gential parts, goes unnoticed, until you find them. As they feed on the dead skins, they don't mingle with your blood, so you won't feel sick. Therefore, you won't know that you have Ring Worm, until you find it.

     

    I'm a wrestler myself, and I got Ring Worm from it. Communicable diseases, skin diseases, in particular, are a threat to wrestlers because of constant skin-to-skin contact and repeated minor abrasions.

     

    Sadly, it caused me to be eliminated from an important wrestling tournament that I wanted to attend, because it's very contagious.

     

    So did any of you SFN members have this before or not?

  12. Nose bleeds is rather very common in the sport of wrestling. I would often see some guy, (even girls) have his nose bleeding, because he got hit in the nose, or whatever. I'm a wrestler myself too, but nose bleeds never happened to me. I did get my nose hit before, but no blood came out. But afteward, when I blow my nose because it's full of mucus, then I would see a sign of blood. It's not that bad really.

    swansont: the reason your calculations might be out is because you need 1g of matter to annihilate to create that energy. That is 0.5g of matter and 0.5g antimatter and NOT 1g antimatter as suggested - full calculations on the link above.

     

    As for storing antiparticles:

    You can't store it because it cannot come into contact with anything. So you could use magnetic fields to store it' date=' but no magnetic field is strong enough to store enough of it to be used for annything useful.

     

    Furthermore you could not create enough of it at once to do anything useful with it. With the rate that CERN is currently producing antimatter it would take two billion years to create 1g (see the link for that maths).

    Whilst antimatter is 100% efficient when it annihilates the problem with making it is that you put energy into making them and then some of the antimatter particles will escape or annihilate before you can capture them for use. In that respect it is not 100% efficient, however theoretically it is. Again see the link for more.
