  1. True, not a lot compared to windows. I feel as if you are a little hostile though, we are just talking about OS'.
  2. Nice analogy with the pitcher of water. Thank you for confirming what I said , I am always somewhat unsure of myself when it comes to explaining these concepts accurately .
  3. I assume you mean the point of singularity. No it did not have a point in space, all space was existent within that point, space expanded with universe after the big bang.
  4. I probably should of but you could add professionals to any of the operating systems. Professional is a broad concept. Windows appeals most to the casual user that was the point I was trying to make. And actually elecard is in the process of developing their software to work on mac and linux platforms. So you will not find a linux version yet.
  5. A) Newtons Laws do not work on the atomic level at all. If that were true we would be able to calculate all the physical properties of the particles, but because of the Uncertainty Principle we cannot. It is because simply observing these particles can change there velocity, frequency, and position. Furthermore these particles can assume multiple positions at one time, that is totally contradictory to Newtonian Physics. B) You equate string theory to quantum physics. String Theory is one aspect of quantum physics. Thats is kinda misleading, String theory is one small aspect of quantum physics. Furthermore, there is not one string theory there is: string theory, super string theory, m-theory, f-theory and others. C) If you consider the Higgs Boson, Tachyons, and Gravitation the same that is also not a good way of looking at it. Higgs Boson- Is the theoretical particle that would give an object resting mass. Tachyons- Another theoretical particle, that would have no resting mass and travel faster than light, essentially moving backward through time. How could those two theoretical particles be the same? They are not. Even if the Higgs Boson was discovered Gravity would be the effect caused by the Higgs Boson, not the same as the Higgs Boson. D) We have more than one way of charting astronomical observations. To observe distant bodies in distant solar systems we formulate the coordinate plane around the largest body of mass in the distant bodies respective solar system. But you are correct they are mathematically equal, but quantum physics and Newtonian physics are not comparable to that. They are not mathematically equal. This is from wikipedia. "The ray approximation of classical mechanics breaks down when the de Broglie wavelength is not much smaller than other dimensions of the system. For non-relativistic particles, this wavelength is where h is Planck's constant and p is the momentum. Again, this happens with electrons before it happens with heavier particles. For example, the electrons used by Clinton Davisson and Lester Germer in 1927, accelerated by 54 volts, had a wave length of 0.167 nm, which was long enough to exhibit a single diffraction side lobe when reflecting from the face of a nickel crystal with atomic spacing of 0.215 nm. With a larger vacuum chamber, it would seem relatively easy to increase the angular resolution from around a radian to a milliradian and see quantum diffraction from the periodic patterns of integrated circuit computer memory. More practical examples of the failure of classical mechanics on an engineering scale are conduction by quantum tunneling in tunnel diodes and very narrow transistor gates in integrated circuits. Classical mechanics is the same extreme high frequency approximation as geometric optics. It is more often accurate because it describes particles and bodies with rest mass. These have more momentum and therefore shorter De Broglie wavelengths than massless particles, such as light, with the same kinetic energies." Classical mechanics is used to study an objects position, velocity, force, etc at a given time. In quantum mechanics the objects position, velocity, force, etc are directly effected by our simple observation. Furthermore, classical mechanics assumes that an object has an exact position and velocity at a given time. In quantum mechanics there can be multiple possible values for position and velocity at a given time. They are not mathematically equal.
  6. This is not correct I'll explain why, even before reading the PDF. You may know the length of two of three sides, lets call those sides AB and the unknown C. If the angle of the vertex where A and B meet is increased the length of C will be increased. No matter how you change the triangle you are assuming the size of one of the angles. You have to follow the rules of figuring out the size of a triangle, this is trig 101. In order to figure out all the sides and angles of the triangle you must have at least one of the combinations of given data. SSS(side side side) SSA (side side angle) SAA (side angle angle) ASA (angle side angle) SAS (side angle side) I actually tried to do the same thing in my 9th grade geometry class, I thought I could solve a triangle with two sides but you can't, just as explained above. My teacher told me how every year she has one kid who tries to do this. It is good to think outside the box, but its good to remember not everything inside the box is wrong. Cool website BTW .
  7. The reason we know that the galaxies and super-clusters are moving apart from each other is because they are red-shifted and galaxies further apart are red-shifted even further, but we don't exactly know where the center is or if there is a center. I do not think we can pin point a center, all we know is that the other galaxies are moving away from our Milky Way Galaxy (there are some exceptions though, Andromeda is on a course for our galaxy), and the further away the galaxies are, the faster they are moving away from us. As far as imagining the Universe as a 3d circle with a definite radius, that is not necessarily a good way of thinking of it. Stephen Hawking explains it well in his book a Brief History of Time and of course I am paraphrasing. The Universe has no boundaries but is finite. Think of it being a two dimensional observer moving around the surface of a three dimensional sphere. You could never reach the end, and it would seem limitless but its really not, there is a finite amount of surface area. Just like how the two dimensional observer is limited in what he/she can see in a three dimensional universe, we three dimensional observers are limited in what we can see in our four, ten, or twenty dimensional Universe. The reason why I say four, ten or twenty is because there are different versions of string theory that theorize different values for how many dimensions our Universe is made up of. Finally Mr. INow mentioned how the Universe is flat, that is correct and to expand upon it, It may not seem flat to us because we can look up, down, right, left, front, and back, but just like how a two dimensional object looks flat when viewing it from a three dimensional perspective a three-dimensional object might look flat when viewing it from a four, dimensional perspective and it may look like just a dot from even higher dimensions. Of course no-one knows for sure, but I find looking at it this way helps me understand these theories. Stephen Hawking also said in his other book Universe in a Nutshell (which I liked a little more than the latter) that no single man can completely understand the implications of quantum mechanics. So don't feel discouraged if it is hard to grasp. It is hard to imagine but I hope I helped .
  8. First, I would like to apologize to everyone for getting so offended earlier. Bad day, but still not an excuse for me getting so upset. I know you were just joking bascule. Anyway, I think each of the operating systems serves a specific purpose. Windows is obviously for the gamers and casual computer users. Mac is very good for the artist, photo editing and video editing is great, plus it is a beautiful operating system that is written very well. Ubuntu is great for the people who can't afford that latter two, and it provides amazing desktop customization, and Linux is very good for servers. Slate.com rated Windows 7 the best OS on the market? Thats interesting, I am looking forward to trying it out eventually, when I get the $120. I have a friend who bought it and he only has one complaint so far, vent does not work, but I am sure they will fix that soon all new OS's have bugs.
  9. I understand now. So Mokele correct me if I am wrong: I would die from the lack of o2 before I died from the CO2 poisoning? And that if it was CO2 poisoning I would of just passed out. I can understand that. Thank you for clearing that up . In that case, excess CO2 does not seem all that bad for animal testing. Back to the original post, I think to ask if animal testing is wrong or right is the wrong question. One has to ask, Is animal testing necessary? I believe it is to preserve human life, although it is at the expense of an animal. But we ourselves are humans, so we have somewhat of a bias toward human life you might say.
  10. That is a totally mis-leading statement. Linux systems stay stable far longer than windows systems. That is why most servers primarily use a Linux based system, and most supercomputers use Linux based systems. So was your other statement about relying on third-party programs for anti-virus protection. In-fact many Windows users rely on ad-aware to prevent mal-ware/ad-ware as opposed to the built in Windows protection which takes up loads of resource space when activated. Merged post follows: Consecutive posts merged Insults are often humor at someone else's expense. In this case mine.
  11. Hahahah! You ran out of facts to support your argument I am guessing, and instead of giving a logical argument you personally attack me by inferring I wont get laid as much as you because I use Linux. And you do it using photos that look like they were drawn by a five year old, very mature. So tell me bascule, what studies support this rudimentary, child-like picture book statement? Furthermore, from my experience with women, they do not go for guys who walk into bars and talk about their operating systems, or bald guys with clown shoes. Finally, that post was completely off-topic and insulting. That violates several rules of this forum.
  12. Actually since I was in an air-tight cooler I was breathing the oxygen and exhaling CO2. That leads to high CO2 inside the confined area, does it not?
  13. I have no idea what a wombel is, but there is an interesting story behind the name. . .

I use to be a big Starcraft player in my early-teen years.I just came up with the most unique name I could think of after I started my own clan (nerdy I know). I called myself toastywombel-UC. The UC was the tag for my clan, Urban Chaos. After I moved on from Starcraft I kept the name toastywombel as my on-line alias.

  14. I would agree with Mr. Skeptic, saying that CO2 poisoning is a peaceful death is a bit of a stretch. Although it is more humane than many other possible methods it's definitely not "peaceful". When I was a young child the age of four I accidentally locked myself in a large ice-chest in my parents garage. It was one of the most horrifying moments of my life and I remember it vividly. After a few seconds I could feel a strong burning sensation in my chest. It is a very unique feeling because you continue to breath but you get no oxygen. I started to scream and luckily my dad was going in and out of the garage and he let me out. I suppose I was only in there about half a minute to a minute, but I would not describe it as a peaceful.
  15. Well I am not well vetted on the KDE desktop environment (Kubuntu), but if you are willing to install Ubuntu I could offer my help. If you would rather stick with Kubuntu you should most likely ask Jill since she was the one who initially helped you with the dual-boot. If you do decide you would like my help just let me know through a pm, its probably best if we stay on-topic and I wouldn't think offering you extensive Linux help on this thread would be considered on-topic. Gotta follow da rules .
  16. Well you stick to Mac which costs more than anything else and really does not deliver. And you said the result in Linux is not a desirable one? Thats a loaded statement. With wine-0.9.58, Photoshop CS2 works really well. And the latest versions of Photoshop have some bugs but thats because with emulation it takes time for the programmers to work this out. I guarantee, give it time and Photoshop will eventually work very well with Wine. But why use Photoshop when Gimp does nearly the same job for $0 and can run on 128mb of Ram. I'd like to see the latest versions of Photoshop do that. And yes I know dividing by zero is undefined, because zero can go into any number an infinite amount of times. I don't know how many times I have to admit that I used fuzzy math. I even said on the same post you quoted that it was not exactly right. Merged post follows: Consecutive posts merged Well I don't know how much experience you have with Linux, but if you don't have any you most likely will want to do a dual-boot. And read some tutorials. As for getting Ubuntu you can burn a live-cd from here. With the Live CD you can just put it in and boot it up and you can try Ubuntu without installing it. I would recommend you reading these articles before switching though. http://www.pcmech.com/article/windows-to-ubuntu-transition-guide/ https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot http://linux.oneandoneis2.org/LNW.htm
  17. If you had ever used compiz-fusion, you would know windows 7 isn't nearly as pretty. And compiz-fusion isn't a mod, its more a third party program that utilizes the capabilities of GNOME or KDE (The desktop environments available for linux) check these links out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oq_kk2BEG4M&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_Q3eHuC0MY I would like to see windows do any of that, and still be able to boot off of a live-cd.
  18. Off topic, but hey Klanos, I noticed when this forum was moved that it was very hard trying to find it again. I usually just do the advanced search and type my user name in the "search by username" but the post did not come up? Good to point out though that universes are not the same as dimensions. Dimensions exist within a Universe.
  19. Actually, one of the experiments proposed could prove the existence of other dimensions. According to most string theories, gravity is suggested to be so weak compared to the other three fundamental forces because it is spread out among the other dimensions. Many proponents of string theories (such as M. Kaku) have suggested that by using Particle Colliders we could produce a graviton and observe it while it dissipates into another dimension. This would provide a degree of observable and tangible evidence in favor of the string-theories. And I am not aware of Newton's First Law of Energy lol. Maybe you are referring to the law of conservation of energy, which was put together by Albert Einstein, but he build upon the work of many other physicists such as Newton. But it was Einstein who first stated it. But remember these don't do well in predicting the aspects of atomic and subatomic particles. Merged post follows: Consecutive posts mergedFurthermore this begs another question. If Newton's Laws do not apply to atomic/ subatomic particles are they still Laws, or theories? It would be nice if someone could answer or explain this to me TY .
  20. Jill's got my back! lol, You do have a point, the cost of operation for a PC is very minimal compared to operating costs for a business server. I don't know of anyone who budgets there PC operation costs lol.
  21. Yeah I know, I admitted that I twisted the numbers a bit. Lol kinda like an old saying, "Figures don't lie, but liars figure." I would not call myself a liar though I pointed out that my mathematics were skewed. But you are right Skeptic.
  22. Yeah Windows controls the gaming market, but Linux has a bunch of games too, they just aren't as popular because they are not commercialized. And Linux can actually run windows executables through Wine (windows emulator). Several games work great on Linux, and these are games aren't even written for Linux! W.O.W, Half-Life 2, Oblivion, Nearly all Steam Games, Call of Duty 4, Battlefield 2142, Final Fantasy XI: Online Edition, Sims, all have platinum ratings on Linux. They don't just work on Linux, they work great. Wine also runs most Windows applications such as Office and many others. Linux supports much more software than mac, guaranteed, and it's free . Furthermore, have you heard of PearPC its a Macintosh emulator for Linux and it allows the user to run OS X in a shell, inside of Linux. So Linux can actually run nearly all mac applications. Finally when I said Linux is infinitely cheaper, that is technically mathematically correct. Let me explain. Cost of any Linux OS= $0 Cost of OS X SL= $299 Cost of Windows 7= $119 Now lets put it into an equation how many times more expensive is OS X to any Linux Distro 0(x)=299, No matter how big you make the variable value, 0 times anything is 0. This is why it is infinitely cheaper. infinity(0)=0. In a way you could argue its beyond infinitely cheaper lol. But yeah thats kinda a play on numbers your right, it would be more accurate to say that its $299 cheaper than OS X SL, or $119 cheaper than Windows 7. But thats not even counting the cost of the additional software. The only problem with Linux is it requires the user to be a little more tech-suave, but not much more. Especially considering that there are multiple support forums for each specific kind of Linux distro. Don't get me wrong, I like mac much more than windows. I would prefer if they turned their software market into an open source software market. But they make some very innovative and interesting hardware. Merged post follows: Consecutive posts mergedOne more thing, I have a serious disdain for Steve Jobs. He is a total hypocrite. He always complains about how windows is not innovative. Jobs stole the whole GUI and modern personal computer idea from Xerox. Merged post follows: Consecutive posts mergedTo give mac some more credit though, they have moved away from being strictly proprietary throughout the years.
  23. What would be interesting to find out is if the gene(s) that cause these similarities in humans are the same exact genes that cause the similarities in other animals. The more we study genetics, it seems to me, the more we realize how similar humans are to the other animals. I remember before we mapped the human genome many scientists predicted that humans may have up to 100,000 genes, because most of our animal counter-parts had only 20,000-25,000. After it was all said and done it turned out humans had about 20,000-25,000 genes. Lol sometimes man can be a little egotistical.
  24. I am not a big fan of apple, they make a great product but its no better than the linux distros, and it costs infinitely more. Plus proprietary systems are a stinker if something goes wrong, if the company goes under you are screwed or if something breaks the company charges you out the butt because they have a monopoly on all the parts that work for that device. The only advantage of a vertically built system is that the same company makes all the parts for the device so you never have to deal with compatibility problems (as long as you use hard-ware and software from that company).
  25. I agree, Stephen Hawking said that trying to explain existence before the big bang is like asking for a point south of the south-pole. It is undefined.
