  1. nope, not a word of explanation. it was poorly written too, somewhat humorous. I'm almost certain it was a hoax but then i got to thinking that the possibilities would be pretty interesting. the only option was to send in this card and recieve "free information." hmm, maybe i'll do that. I'm hooked now.
  2. hahaha. d cell batteries. that's probably the best use i've heard for them. I rarely see people using those anymore, everything is rechargeable nowadays.
  3. Oh i always muzzle load the potato, i just spray the deoderant through the endcap... And it got sticky so i could never screw it all the way on. Come to think of it, that probably wasn't the most intelligent thing to do. Does anyone know of any other ways to make a hole to spray in the propellant? When i tried (and failed) to make a butane-powered gun (using lighters of all stupid things) I tried using metal pipe valves but they didn't work well. Any ideas? Yt, you made a cannon? that's not even a spud gun anymore, that's ghetto-artillery! holy crap that thing must have gone a mile. where did you get the black powder for it? empty some shotgun shells or make it yourself? wow.
  4. that's true. I read somewhere that the Russians were developing a larger spacecraft solely for the transport of materials into space (mainly to ISS i think). Perhaps NASA will develop a universal propulsion/rocketry system for launching a whole variety of smaller vehicles, carrying equipment supplies or astronauts.
  5. Oh yeah, thanks for that link ophiolite. That's really informative. So the regular angle of the atoms is 104.5 degrees, and the claimed angle for the magic water is 114.
  6. Although it is most likely just a hoax, the possibilities are interesting. Perhaps, as the molecule would be "skinnier" it could pass through membranes that normal water cannot. Or, as alien said it could have different boiling times or whatnot. Or the composition of the ice could be different. Who knows.
  7. Ok, yeah you're right about the 7 crew. I thought it was more, don't know why... Well what do you think about all the alternate spacecraft NASA is trying (and hiring others) to design?
  8. ah yes. back when snl was good...
  9. I agree, I seriously doubt the ad's credibility. The ad spends more time gloating about the "inventors" previous successes than describing the magical water product. But even if it were possible to create this water for sustained periods of time, would it have any important uses?
  10. for a pneumatic gun, you are probably correct. But i was talking about a combustion gun, where I believe the threading from the end cap would provide the weakest spot in case of a malfunction. The end cap to my gun has blown off twice in the past week. Although that could be because i only give it about half a turn because the threads are coated with combusted deoderant... hmm maybe i need to do some fixing soon.
  11. i though it had to be far below 1 degree. maybe a quarter of a degree. I'm not sure though, I just know it's gotta be incredibly precise.
  12. you mean besides the shuttle launched a few weeks ago? all the programming for the landing and approach programs has to be flawless... anything below perfection and there goes another few billion dollars, nevermind 9 lives and the end of the shuttle, perhaps even of American manned space flight. I recently read that for Discovery's last launch (was it Discovery? I think so, i hope i'm not wrong or i just made a fool of myself) they finally upgraded to flat-panel displays in the cockpit rather than the mechanical dials and cathode-ray tubes that have been around for some 20 odd years. and to think that some poor soul forgot to convert meters to feet for that one mars landing probe... such a mistake could definitely happen again
  13. Ok so I was perusing the ads section of popular science (some of it's cool, some of it's just wacko) and I came across an "ad for information" regarding a new technology that supposedly alters the chemical formation of water. The ad itself was poorly written (didn't give any scientific evidence at all) and just had one reported quote from a professor who exclaimed that this new product altered the angle between the two H atoms in a water molecule by 10 degrees. The writers claim that the angle is now 114 degrees. What I was wondering was; Is any of this scientifically possible? If so, what implications could it have in the real world? Just bottle it as "freaky water" or could it have some use in medecine or other technologies? I forget what month the issue of popular science is; i believe it is august (2005) but i'm not sure. It has the cover story of the engineered superhumans... thanks.
  14. ahhh ok, thanks for the help.
  15. I've been a member for about a month now, and the forum lists me as having posted 56 times. but i am sure i have posted more like 65. it's not a big deal, i'm here to learn not to make myself look smart or anything. but is this just a glitch, or do posts have to be a certain length to be counted, or have moderators/administrators just deleted some of my less intelligent posts? just a little confused.
  16. but do you know how precise it needs to be so the landing is successful?
  17. darn. it was worth a shot.
  18. how magnets work? many people will try and give you an overly complicated answer, involving perhaps some gobble-de-gook involving electrons or element positions within a compound, but there's a much simpler answer. magic
  19. hahah i love the onion. my crazy liberal hippie friend showed me a coupla articles once. what's funny is that there are probably people who truly believe that kind of stuff.
  20. well, bush is pretty stupid but i think it's a stretch to call him a demon... hahah lance, that's funny
  21. so what exactly (or close to it) is the needed "window" to land the shuttle safely? what fraction of a degree?
  22. i nominate myself cause i'm one wild and crazy guy... but really, yt is cool. that periodic table scrabble is fun. and callypigous (i botched that) is cool too.
  23. exacticully. i went to ace hardware and the 4" drain pipe fits somewhat snugly around the end cap and transition piece of the 3" pvc. it wouldn't do anything if the end cap decided to blow off, which i suppose is the ultimate weak spot in the gun, so it isn't the best safety system. but if you really wanted to be safe you probably wouldn't be building a combustion gun in the first place...
  24. you can get the drain pipe (if that's what it is) to be about an inch thicker in diameter so you just slide it around the regular pvc and it's endcap/transition piece (forget what you call that...)
